And yet still not a second of important hockey has been played in Ott or Det in a long time. They still don't know what they truly have, and they're already messing up their cap. Det already has 2 or 3 important UFAs to sign next year. Ott with DeBrincat, Stutzle to re-sign, and a 35 year old goalie.

Exactly. The sens have been the laughing stock of the league for years and have no other choice but play young guys. Right now they have promising guys who put up points, yet still finished in the bottom 5. They also didn't start their rebuild coming off championship years or had 7-8 guys still with prime years left looking to make the playoffs again. I 'm willing to give our promising guys a chance. not start pointing to another shitty team and say "look at what their young guys are doing, their rebuild is so much better, our guys suck!"

The Kings are on a good track but still playing with house money. They rode career production to the playoffs last year on the backs of mostly veterans. If the prospects never take over the team will crash and burn again, and it won’t take long. Kopitar has maybe one season left playing these kinds of minutes.

I have really liked the Sens offseason so far. Hard not to IMO. If this is post Melnyk sens they will be a playoff team in no time. They have the goalie of the future in Forsber (at least they hope), they have space to re-sign Norris and Stuzzle ,and they have some good prospects still to come.

I don't compare to LA as it was different starting points for the rebuild, but I give credit for this offseason.

I am worried about some regression in LA this next year. Hopefully Fiala and Prospect development can help offset this, but specifically in net if Quick regresses and Petersen does not step up the team could be FUBARED

The only reason the Kings would regress next year is if Fiala sucks and Kempe goes to average.

There’s no other real reason I can think of why the Kings will regress next year unless Kopitar and Doughty fall off the map and Byfield has a bad season. Then they’d be lottery bound.

Definitely liked what I saw out of Grundstrom in the playoffs, and hope he can build on it. Kaliyev showed improvement and gained experience last season. The Kings need him to have a break out season next season, or the season following the next one.

I view Fiala as a waste of money, if he isn't playing with Byfield.
Total waste - stick him on the 4th line.

Sometimes when a player switches teams it takes a while to get going. So it is possible Fiala does not hit his peak this season. Quick regressing is definitely possible given his age. Doughty does not have the motivation of the Olympics on him, I do think that was driving him last year (shouldn't but i think it does). I think we need some internal growth to offset some of my concerns no matter what, although maybe I am being a worry wart.

I doubt anyone disputes that. Up to and including the gruesome twosome in charge. The only debate is how the Kings are getting there.

Fiala is a lousy defensive player, but a hell of an attacking rush player.

Playing with Kopitar, assuming that's why he was acquired, ensures that he will be playing primarily matchup hockey with fewer attacking options.

Its the same reason Kovalchuk and Arvidsson struggled with Anze. Fiala won't come close to 80 points if he is on that line. Guessing he is lined up with Danault and Arvidsson by Thanksgiving.

McPhee is a completely incompetent GM who reshuffles the deck every year and mismanages his cap in the process. That’s the problem.

Every team in the league makes cold business decisions if they have to. See: Lombardi and Visnovsky.

Unpopular FA opinions:

I like Copp but that contract is risky, it could be the next Frans Neilsen signing. Good all around game absolutely but banking with term on production that has only happened once...same with the stars and Marchment and Van and Mikheyev. I guess you can bank on their high floors re: all around game, like Danault to some degree, but yeesh.

I would have given Palat that contract in a heartbeat and dumped Iafallo and I say that as a huge Iafallo fan and a guy who doesn't want the team age to get any older.

Everyone is looking at Ottawa, but I see Carolina as the biggest winner in FA. Amongst other things, they landed Patches (who should excel as a minor complementary player rather than a leader, where he's a pillow), upgraded from TDA to Burns, and GAINED draft assets. f***in sorcery.

I agree on Copp and the Canes (although not sure Burns is that much of an upgrade on the ice at this point in the two players careers). Palat's deal seems too long to me.

Carolina made some great moves but its very particular to their situation. If other teams did the same it may not have looked as promising.
Theyve been hanging around near the finals for years now and their needs happen to be a semi one dimensional scorer like Patch and an offensive presence from the blue line like Burns.
I think two teams that the fans should be jealous of what Carolina just did are the Islanders and Stars. Exactly what both needed and their gms caught with their pants down.

Just a little bit louder for those who don't pay attention: this is why you don't just treat your players and prospects as just assets, and you have to consider personal connections and the people you deal with.

This is why a player like Kopitar, who won the cup with the Kings in 2012 and 14, and leading the team in scoring while hardly missing time, gets an extension in 2015.

This is why the Blackhawks, who continue to trade prospects of value away while keeping Kane and Toews, who looked the other way when a teammate was sexually assaulted and mocked, are NOT doing a good job of managing people.

More than anything, this is why Vegas, with their history of unceremoniously tossing players aside who have now hitched their wagons to a moody and temperamental Eichel, are putting their immediate future success at risk.
