Buffalo is an odd one because that same owner (Pegula) owns the Bills and they have become a pretty solid franchise the last little while. They have hired the football ops staff there and the team culture built seems to be quite good.

But the Sabres are just a big clusterf***.

The Bills were that exact same cluster(maybe a little better). Until Josh Allen took a huge step forward. Like if Cozens became Kopitar tomorrow type of jump.

And similarly they have lots of the other parts in place and ready to grow, too.

I had the Bills winning the Super Bowl this year and if it weren't for a lame random OT format it probably would be happening (I've always hated the flip). People always rag on the Pegulas but I never hear about them so what's the problem. They aren't meddling from anything I've seen/heard. Sabres are a total disaster and at this point the only thing they have going is a massive fanbase (unlike the dumpster fire in AZ). Bills Mafia is ridiculous too, I see them everywhere, if those team could win they would be printing money. There's something seriously wrong with the Sabres, the entire team is a disaster. Lehner called out their medical staff, couple that with how they handled the Eichel ordeal, and you really have to wonder who they are even hiring. Every aspect of the team is a disaster.

I think the Sabres are taking a hit at the box office this year. Think it was something i had recently heard that they were 30th or near the bottom this season with regards to ticket sales. The fanbase is quite frustrated as they should be.

Hope they can turn it around. It's a great market, love going there for games. Good barn.

Pegula has meddled and done some pretty dumb stuff over the years. The endorsement then firing of Botterill in a three week span in June, 2020 was a good illustration of knee jerk reactions and mind changes. The Bills weren't much better until the past two seasons.

They are averaging less than 9,000 fans this year, worst in the league by far. It's shocking to see it on TV, it looks completely empty, worse than an AHL game. But good for them, I wouldn't support that train wreck either. Their TV ratings have also dropped (which are usually some of the best).

Worse than Arizona? C'mon RP, that can't be....Ah, your not counting Arizona as an NHL franchise.

One of the issues here is Canadian fans have not been able to get over to the games due to restrictions and that has eaten into their ticket/nightly gate revenue. I forgot what the percentage it is on average of fans crossing over to watch but it's a decent chunk.

Graph I saw had them last, Ottawa is actually last. Arizona should not be considered an NHL team (or even AHL) but they are beating those two! Senators, another dumpster fire of a team.

I believe crossing the border isn't a problem if you're double vaxxed.

Double vaxxed? Bruh, 2 shots is only halfway there. One shot, two shot, three shot, four shot...

Guess they didn't poll Brisson

Edit: Jokes aside some of the feedback is really interesting

"
“You know which teams stay in the nicer hotels, have the nicer flights, and have the better services overall for a client.”
“Practice facilities or arena is a good place to start. That’s a reflection of how an owner is willing to spend for their players. But look at other things, like massage therapists and support staff. Does a team have one person handling the job of three people or do they have six people handling the job of three people?”
“My barometer for that is basically: Is the owner spending money on the players and the other things fans might not think of? The wives’ room, the kids’ rooms, the rink, the amenities on the plane. Those are the first-class organizations.”"

Carolina that low, wow. Rod the Bod is one of the best coaches in the league and easily the best in terms of players wanting to go to battle for him. I have so much respect for him. As for the owner, don't know the guy, but he clearly endorses their trashy high school girls TikTok till you drop bathroom gossip social media persona. Everything about their brand is so cringeworthy. It honestly makes me hate the team and I can usually separate it. It's nauseating seeing their posts randomly show up. (this is usually when the big brain crowd says the Kings started it, yes I liked the BC Tweet, but most of the Kings social media content is also juvenile cringe)

The article actually references the cheapness of the owner and that Rod is really the one keeping it together for the whole org.

I don't know if the owner is cheap though, they've made some strange moves, but apparently a lot of them are driven by analytics. Last I checked they were right at the cap.

Their trashy social media (have I mentioned it's TRASHY?!?) is the opposite of Rod the Bod who is the ultimate all business pro.

I can't say much more because its' paywalled but it gives examples, see my previous post for some of the insight from agents

but in short where other franchises splurge on amenities beyond contracts Dundon is a miser

I'm a Bills fan so I feel the need to comment on the Pegulas.

The reason the franchise was able to turn things around (after 17 straight years of missing the playoffs) is because they hired Sean McDermott. In football, the coach basically runs the franchise.

And McDermott runs a tight ship. He, like Dean Lombardi, wiped out all the staff and brought in his own guys. He brought in the GM and the coaching staff. Traded away a bunch of players that didn't fit his mold. Set the franchise in the right direction; gave it a philosophy. Even before Josh Allen was good, McDermott had them winning games.

As an owner, when you go to hire someone to run your franchise, it mostly just comes down to luck. When the Pegulas hired McDermott, they didn't know if he would be able to do this or not. They had tried 3 other guys before him and they were all failures.

The Bills were also fortunate to draft Josh Allen. How often do you draft a QB and they actually pan out? Again, there's a lot of luck involved there.

In Football if you get the coach and the QB right, you're set for a decade. Hockey is more complicated. No one the Pegulas have hired to run the Sabres has been able to turn it around. They've even tried tanking and that didn't work.

Interesting note about the Bills and McDermott; they actually had the Patrick Mahomes draft pick, but they traded it away to KC.

Brandon Beane and McDermott have been a great combo there. Well run team.
