24. Over the last few months, Doughty “worked my butt off to get in the best shape I could. I’m excited for this season to start.” He was very happy with the Kings’ summer after pressing the organization to push forward. “It wasn’t just me, (Kopitar was) thinking the same thing but he’s not going to say it. He’s reserved, unlike me, I kind of just talk. But everyone was thinking it. Who wouldn’t be thinking it? We’re not getting any younger. It was in their plan anyways, it wasn’t because I said anything.” He made it very clear he “took a lot of blame for himself” about the Kings’ recent struggles.
As he has mentioned several times, Doughty is highly motivated to play for Team Canada, notices when he’s left off Olympic projections and, as he says, “could win 10 Cups and I’d still want more.”

32 Thoughts: The state of the RFA market as training camps open

Glad to see Doty liked the moves. I know Blake stated he was but I wanted to get confirmation from a more independent source and not routed via management.

Can't forget that Kaprizov is the same age as McDavid and Eichel and older than Matthews and Laine. Kaprizov is great but I'm not sure he's the guy I build around.

Good number and term for the Sabres and Dahlin. He had a rough year last year, but this is still comparable to what Werenski and McAvoy were at on their bridge deals. This gives him plenty of time to turn it around and get PAID on his next deal, which hopefully for BUF is 8 x whatever for the franchise 1D they hope he can still be.

EDIT: This also makes the VAN situation juicer. It sounded like they wanted to bridge Petey and extend Hughes long-term, but if Dahlin got $6M on a bridge, they're in trouble given the amount of cap space they have. Benning gonna Benning. I still can't believe they signed Poolman. It's a shame given how much they improved their forward corps (though they're the Canucks so I hope they go down in flames anyways ).

So we have 2 Goalies in the top 20 in cap hits. Not sure Cal is worth 5 million per a season yet. Quick needs to be shopped this summer.

Damn, some Brotherly love coming in hot! :box:

My memory may be a bit foggy, but wasn't NJ worse than Vancouver this past year...?

I think his comments were a bit more innocuous than the headline would indicate. If anything, it's just a guy sticking up for his brother. Hughes had a similar comment on Elliotte Friedman's podcast, so he's probably been asked a lot about Quinn's contract on the NHL media tour.

Paraphrasing, Jack said something along the lines of "I think his defensive play has been unfairly criticized but that's what happens when you're on a bad team. You don't score as much as you'd like and you give up more than you should."

I think people see the headline out of context and assume it to mean "That's what happens when you're on a bad team (and Vancouver is going to be bad this season)" versus "That's what happens when you're on a bad team (2020-21 Vancouver finished last in its division)." In other interviews, Jack is fully cognizant that the Devils haven't been good during his two seasons but is hopeful that they'll be in playoff contention this season.

If anything, the social media team did its job by taking the out of context quote and making people talk about it. The TSN/Sportsnet reporters always laugh/complain about when that happens to them. They give an interview and their own social media people spin it in a way to get more attention while implying something they didn't actually say.

Sure Jack could have said it more diplomatically but he is a 20 year old kid. Double edged sword, most people complain that NHL players give robotic interviews then proceed to jump on them if they say anything remotely interesting.

LA doesn't need the space. One year of both goalies making bank won't be the end of times. Especially since Brown, Carter, Edler and Maata come off.

Exactly. LA has $20 million in cap space next year with Cal's new deal and Quick on the roster. Are we filling up that $20 million somehow? Our only free agents are Brown, Athanasiou, Kempe, Lemieux, Vilardi, Andersson, Lizotte, Grundstrom, Edler, Maatta, Anderson, and Wolanin.

At best, Kempe, Vilardi, and Anderson get modest raises. Andersson, Lizotte, and Grunstrom probably get what they are making now. If Brown re-signs, it's at a much lower figure. Who knows if we bring back the rest.

Are we going big game hunting next offseason? If so, who? A left-handed defenseman maybe? The top ten left-handed defensemen in descending cap-hit order: Mark Giordano, Nick Leddy, Hampus Lindholm, Morgan Reilly, Alex Goligoski, Danny DeKeyser, Olli Maatta, Mattias Ekholm, Will Butcher, Alex Edler.

Maybe Filip Forsberg or Brock Boeser?

Next year Turcotte, Byfeild and Kaliyev will for sure be on the team on entry level deals. Maybe Kupari, Fagemo, Thomas, and Madden too. And that is just up front.

I wouldn’t allow him around my minor league team either. What happens if he is the center of an out in Cleveland? I wouldn’t want an unvaccinated player in our Ontario locker room. The long haul concerns with Covid infections scare the heck out of me and I’m not a professional athlete. CBJ should just cut him and be done with him.

Makes you wonder why they bothered signing him in the first place.
