The NFL is for gambling not really for watching or cheering for a team. Of course there are many people who love and cheer for their team but I know far more people who simply watch it every week because of fantasy football or their weekly wagers. Take away gambling and 90% of NFL coverage goes away.
No doubt gambling is huge. Which is why the NFL has stricter rules on reporting injuries and whether players practice or not during the week, and how much they practice. Whether they were limited for full participants.

That's why the gambling is so huge as bettors get all of the info they can prior to the game. Not limited to Upper/Lower body injuries. It's way more than who wins/loses. So many prop bets with yards, TDs, parlays, etc.

Honest question, was anybody really bothered that much about Wolman's stupid little dance? Why do I just notice people talking about it now? As an old white guy, a member of the group that is supposedly outraged, I am at a loss.
I don't think anyone really cares, but it's way more "offensive" than what Greig did. And yet amazingly nobody has ever felt the need to skate over and crosscheck him in the face for doing it.

I think people are just using it to highlight how f***ing ridiculous Rielly's reaction was, to an absolute nothing play.

The Leafs supporters want to show justification for Reilly's actions, since he's going to get suspended and the Leafs are at the time of the game tied with Det for the 7/8 spot in the East and have teams chasing them, so if they lose him to the 6 games that Perron got for a cross check to the face, it's going to hurt their chances of making the PO.

Okay, so I am still relatively sane, thanks!

Yup, as noted above it's only in the context of the Rielly situation and the absolutely insane reaction of Leaf fans to what happened there.

There is nothing offensive about what Walman did. He scored a game winning goal in a game they were trailing by 2 going into the 3rd. It's not like he did it by scoring the last goal in a 8-1 game or something. It was at a time worth celebrating.

Reilly cross checked an unsuspecting player after the play had ended. I mean perhaps one normally shouldn't blast one into an empty net like that but it's a divisional game between rivals. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to put a bit of an exclamation point on it. And I want to point out Greig didn't then do a celebration or anything. He simply skated around the boards. There was no rubbing it in etc. All the Leafs did was prove how fragile they are with that play and the ridiculous defense of Reilly.

Speaking of gimmicks, why exactly is a team allowed to ice the puck when they are on the PK? Hey, you committed an infraction? We are going to put you down a player but you can now ice the puck with no consequences.

If I was going to change something around penalties, that would be it.
I thought this was a Montreal Canadiens rule from the 50's and then I realized that only concerned ending the penalty after a goal was scored.

It turns out the 1931 implementation of icing rule was caused when the New York Americans iced it 50 times in a game when leading 3-2 against Boston (the Boston fans through stuff on the ice when they realized what was happening) then several months later Boston did it some 86 times in Montreal to make it a scoreless tie. It's like watching curling with a lead and the draw.

But they made an exception for the Power Kill - the NHL simply continued to allow it. USA Hockey implemented with some success but only for under 14 games - it appears to encourage kids to focus on their skills. The WHA never had it.

I dislike the jailbreak rule. I don’t think we should be incentivizing teams to commit penalties and then have a method to get away with it.

In fact, I would advocate for a contrary rule change. That penalties last the full duration whether a PPG is scored or not. Treat a minor penalty the same as a major. It would create more offensive situations, and it will pressure players to commit less penalties which ought to give star players more space at 5v5 too.
yes and no. in principal the penalty should be served and the player punished. unfortunately The Montreal Canadiens rule had to be implemented because it ran up the score on a minor infraction. Not having them on major/match penalties is good enough and it was exciting that one time the Brett Hull St Louis Blues dug themselves out of a hole and scored 4 goals in the playoffs against the Kings. (Not sure if that's what cost Hrudy his job).

At worst, I would bench the player for the rest of the two minutes if the goal is scored. Refs bench players all the time (for the next play), it just doesn't show on the box score..

That team was screwed from the time that Matthews and Marner squeezed out every possible dollar they could get.

I'm not saying they should have taken less than their worth, but they pushed the envelope based on what salaries were at the time. I think this indicated to the rest of the group that individual success was more important than team success, and that attitude has pervaded since.

The whole trajectory of that team could have been altered if they'd traded Marner when he held out. But the spreadsheet kids like Dubas don't take time to think about team culture; they can't quantify it so in their mind it doesn't exist.

This is a big reason why I didn't have a problem trading Horvat; he was asking for a contract that he would underperform from day 1, and that sends a terrible signal to the rest of the group.

The NFL made a big change to overtime in 2022 which allows both teams possession time in o/t. Always bugged me that the team that won the frickin coin toss, got to win the game by scoring a touchdown - over and out.
It used to be sudden death which made no sense in football. At best the NFL should just play straight time until the score for one team is higher at the end of it.

Heck, Gary should eliminate Sudden Death if he's going to have other gimmicks in OT like 3x3 and even the shootout.
3x3 has been a serious failure in OT and at this point all they are talking about it is tweaking the rules again to stop the worst abuse of it, which is dumb. Maybe we can't go back to 4x4 OT again because of this kind of play so put it back to 5x5.

How about we go the other way, 8 v 8 play, but with no goalies!

(makes about as much sense as 3v3 in its current form)

Here's been my personal experience with all the different ball sports:

Soccer (Football) - Used to love it. Back in 90's China there were tournaments with different levels, it was quite exciting, even birthed some rivalries between fans such as Beijing vs Shanghai. There were not a huge amount of money but you can tell the players were doing their best, and the media actually drafted various profiles for them, such as labeling a player as a stone cold killer on the field who'll murder you without even flinching. After I came to Canada, soccer got richer and worse, various scandals and corruption made the games almost unwatchable, plus I kinda lost patience to watch it.

Basketball (Basketball) - Watched it on and off through the Kobe Bryant years, the Piston vs Pacers brawl was hilarious, Kobe was awesome, and Yao Ming was surprisingly good. But I started to dislike the last 3 minutes of the game, when tensions are high and every play ended with a time out and commercial break. Yeah no, screw that.

Football (Olive Ball) - Tried to watch it twice, I was extremely confused as to what was happening. Sure I know the basic idea but it seems like 10 seconds of actual play followed by nine years of players and coaches standing around to do...what, crossword puzzles? Snooze fest both times, will never watch this crap ever again.

Baseball (Bat Ball) - Baseball made football look exciting. Watched one game, stop caring after that. No I'm not saying that I fell asleep, I'm just saying that none of you guys were around to prove that I fell asleep.

Hockey (Ice Ball) - I recall watching a brief highlight of Marian Hossa playing for Senators, he was on a break away but either he blew a tire or something, he fell on the ice and was sliding forward with the puck. Goalie came out to challenge, and Hossa just whacked the puck into the net anyways. I thought holy shit this is actually awesome. First time watching it seriously was...2009? Maybe? Yeah, been sticking with hockey since. If no goals there are still hits and fights. Most my Chinese friends don't watch hockey because they can't see the puck. No, it's the PUCK that's too small!

P.S.1: In the brackets are how the Chinese translated the name of the sports, as you can see aside from soccer and basketball, every other one is weird.

P.S.2: Another reason I watch hockey is the awesomeness of the Stanley Cup, looks like a silver monument by itself.
No love for curling, and you don't watch table tennis at all . To be fair, no one can see the puck in the pre-HD TV era :laugh::laugh:

The 3x3 shows us that the coach will find a way to play it safe in the end (remember 3x3 was good at first), I believe the only solution is a 3pts system. regular / OT winner - 3 pts, SO winner - 2 pts, Loser in OT / SO - 1 pt.
