Sounds like the Oilers have DECLINED to match both deals. Holloway and Broberg are Blues. Oilers lost a lot of blueline depth this week. Curious moves.

Reported offers from the Oilers were 2 x 1.1 per for Broberg and 3 x 1.05 for Holloway. Pretty clear why they signed the offer sheets.

According to Friedman they could have signed both for about $3.5 million.
Once the offer sheets were signed I don’t think the Oilers had any choice but to move on but leaving two RFA’s unsigned in mid August with no cap space was pretty poor management. There were reportedly 3 teams interested in offer sheeting Broberg.
Going to be interesting to see how Oilers improve that D now as they still have very little cap space.

No way holloway should do 3 years at $1.05. Easy to turn that down.
Not quite shades of the corson OS where Edm didn’t match but traded those picks back to the blues for Cuju and Grier. But they squeezed out an extra 3rd but in like 4 drafts down the line plus a 23 former 5th rounder.

Emphasis on the material breach—which typically means something more serious with regard to the team or league’s reputation.

Johansen seemed to be the player that the Avalanche lockerroom were most upset with last year.

But it was also weird last year when Philly tried to assign him to the AHL only to have it reversed at the last second due to injury. Not sure they could’ve bought him out if he was on IR, either. Maybe Philly thinks there were some shenanigans going on.

This will get grieved by the PA. Have to, just to ensure precedence. Need the Flyers to show a true material breach to terminate this contract.

So wait, why did they trade Ceci again? I thought that was done to give them the cap flexibility to keep Broberg?
I'm sure Broberg is happy to land in STL over remaining in EDM. Play the right side with Nurse in EDM or play the left side with one of Faulk/Parayko in STL.

I'm not convinced they're all that confident Kane will be on LTIR for very long. They need cap space anyways, and the Sharks got hosed in that deal. Reports today are they're looking to maintain flexibility to make some additions during the season.

they pivoted well with the ceci for emberson swap, but if that was available anyways, keeping broberg at <$2m *and* adding emberson would've put them in a better spot than whatever they do now to add a body (tyson barrie? lmao)

also not convinced they'll be able to do much with the cap space and picks, but if they can add a provorov/gavrikov/chychrun/murphy level defenseman in-season or at the deadline, that would suck.

If they thinking about moving Ceci at all, always best to do it early. But, it's now done.

Don't think the way GMs operate will change too much with their non arb RFAs (the lower end ones). Will still try to grind the ones who were just decent or didn't show enough on their elc, to get either that 3rd year or a lower cap. Just going to depend on whether another team targets your player or not.

The coilers were (rightly IMO) never going to offer Broberg his ask.

I'd rather have the 2nd than Broberg considering he's no longer waivers exempt, hasn't been able to win an NHL job and on a team that absolutely cannot afford to overpay for or carry any dead weight (regardless of where they were drafted).

Armstrong went full re+ard here. And it is hilarious that Bowman squeezed an extra 3rd + defensive prospect out of him this morning to walk away from those offer sheets.

Because Ceci sucks anyways? And now they have a pile of cap space and a 2nd and 3rd to add a player.

Probably the best outcome possible for Edmonton under the circumstances. Irritating.

They also got paid another 3rd in 2028 in that weird future consideration deal.

Shades of the Corson OS between STL and EDM back in the 90's.

For a lot of young players where you land and the situation does play a big part on your chances for success. He's been asked to play on his opposite with Nurse, who is known for his defensive lapses/mistakes. He's not on his natural left side with a guy like Tanev. See if Faulk/Parayko can help bring out the best in him.

Doubtful he will be worth $4.6 mill this season. Same with Holloway, but year 2, they need to be very close to it, otherwise, the Blues probably walk from their QO.

Definitely a hit to the Oilers, but unsure how much. Holloway’s numbers are similar to Podz at the same age, although the eye test for Holloway was much, much better in my opinion.

The Broberg hit is more theoretical. His growth was insulation against an Ekholm age related decline. If Ekholm plays to the same level, the Oilers will still be fine with a deadline move. If not, they really needed him to grow into that top 4 role next to Nurse to keep pace.

Still likely too risky to sign that deal for Edmonton, as the 4.5 figure for them meant he had to hit or they’d be screwed this year. Very curious who they try to get with those assets to fill that spot.
