Watching the Oilers game and I'm reminded how objective Shorthouse calls the game. The play by play guy is gushing over routine Skinner saves in a way we just don't get. Honestly would be nice to get a bit more of a homer broadcast, love Shorthouse though.

Shorthouse has been routinely robbed of doing national broadcasts for no reason, especially in the playoffs. He’s an absolute gem and should easily be the #2 guy at Sportsnet behind Cuthbert.

We’ve been routinely spoiled in this market by having the best play by play guys - Robson, Hughson, and for a long time now Shorty.

The plus side is we get to have him to ourselves, but man I’d be a little pissed if I was him getting passed over by middling talent during the playoffs.

He's so good and unbiased that he'd be the perfect guy for HNIC or the playoffs. Guy is strictly better than Cuthbert imo.

Predators need to play at a 115 point pace the rest of the year just to get to 96 points (last year's WC2 had 98 points).
No team in the NHL had 115 points last year.

Season's already over for Nashville, they're done.

Michkov continues to make every team who didn’t select him (other than Chicago) look stupid.

Especially MTL.

Imagine MTL having Michkov and Demidov?
It’s still too early to say. The other teams drafted Cs and Ds. IIRC, many Habs fans would have preferred the Cs that went ahead of Michkov. But ya Michkov is looking like the real deal. If he’s closer to the “generational talent” that some consider him as then ya the teams that didn’t draft him other than Chicago were wrong. The Russian factor is a factor.

The Trouba deal will be an excellent deal for Anaheim who had way too many young D getting ventilated on a nightly basis.

Trouba is still a solid top-4 leverage D even if he's overpaid. The real cash he's owed ($6 million/year) is also more in line with his performances.

Rebuilding teams need players like this to get out of the rebuild and when you're way below the cap the hit doesn't really matter. It's crazy that Chicago in particular didn't beat this deal.
The Black Hawks problems lie more on the front end than on defense as Murphy, Brodie and Martinez all play on the right side and is Trouba really an upgrade...well maybe over Brodie but still.

I can see why the 2 big centers went over him for the long term but there is no way that Michkov should have dropped out of the top 4....at all.

All the MSM urinalists were so eager to jump on the hype train when Stamkos Marschessault and Skej were signed.

To those morons, I say bon appetite~.

i thought they'd be a lot stronger than they are. i like the word urinalist.

Wrong takes are fine, no one is perfect.

For the MSM, this is their job, they are getting paid to do said job publically. And so frequently they do so with such overconfidence and arrogance.

It's a Vancouver tradition from the legendary Jim Robson then Jim Hughson.

We as Canucks fans are spoiled that way and personally I never could stand the absolute homer broadcasters and still can't.

Martinez is a LD. Brodie is a left shot that has played mostly RD but has fallen so far he's not even a decent NHL regular at this point.

They do have Jones and Murphy at RD but absolutely should have tried to add Trouba as that could have facilitated moving Murphy who is actually on a decent contract when healthy for another year this deadline and then Trouba at the end of his deal when his cap hit and some retention could have fetched a quality asset

The reason Anaheim is dumb because they valued the player in the first place.

There was no universe where they could have gotten sweeteners because they were bidding against the waiver wire, and the waiver wire was offering to take the contract from the Rangers hands free of charge.

People get bent out of shape for the weirdest reasons and seem to need to call out other GM's at every turn possible. Do people here really follow Anaheim that closely that they know what they are trying to accomplish here? They have had tonnes of picks lately so a fourth is nothing and Vaakanainen at 25 is useless. They bring in former and probably current top 2/4 RD with some toughness and experience to help insulate their youth. On top of that that they can and will likely trade him for more than they gave up.

I really don't see the reasoning behind calling them dumb just because they didn't play some stupid asset value assessment leverage stand-off. They saw a player they wanted and traded minimal assets to get him.

Fair enough and it's hard to keep track of which lefties play on the right side.

That being said, let's says the Black Hawks did pick up Trouba and then traded Murphy, what exactly of value could they get back for Murphy?

Too many moving parts and sounds good on here but a lot harder to do in real life IMO.

I would think a 2nd rounder and a B prospect or a 3/4th attached for a RD on a good contract for another year that can play top4 and has 10pts in 30 games and is treading water as a shut down defender on that train wreck team given the market and lack of quality available players .

See that's the thing is that I think that the Black Hawks might be better off in just keeping Murphy then.

It's definitely a good situation for them that Murphy is fine with being a mentor.

Tough call as it's important to have veteran D to insulate the youngsters.

I'm a firm believer though that with Jones already the #1 RD they should be looking to double the top2/3 rounds of picks in a retool/rebuild and getting free agents looking to get top4 from btm pairings shouldn't be too hard. If they got value for Murphy this year and then Trouba next and still had Jones and the ability to fill it through free agency that's how you can fast track a 7yr rebuild and actually develop the youngsters properly
