Around The League Thread - 2026 Offseason

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Forgot to mention this as something driving the market the way it is - nobody has been bought out yet. I expect we'll see a few buyouts on the last day before you can, but normally at least a few guys are bought out. I thought Tsyplakov would be bought out but Sunny managed to send him away.

Also teams with cap space cannot really get decent players for free anymore, because there aren't 'cap strapped teams', or at least not to the extent that there were before. Any player who becomes available in trade will have multiple suitors and the team who owns him will extract a price for him. We're just so far away from the days of Chicago having to send a young Teuvo Teravainen with Bryan Bickell and only getting a 2nd and 3rd in return. Having cap space is actually bad now, there's extremely little value in it.

Oooh. Good points on both paragraphs.

Lebrun on Early Trading Tidbits:

"Most teams dont expect BUF to use the 4th overall pick. They had discussions about Knies, Helelbuyck and Trocheck"

On Helle 'Panthers are very interested but wont move Lundell. Hurricanes also involved and interested"

On Robertson "Both sides are talking. They are looking at his trade value as a Plan B. Alot of people wondering about an offer sheet for Jrob, there is urgency for DAL to figure this out in the next week"

On Trocheck "He will be moving, but the Rangers holding out for a big offer. Said they will regret not moving hi mat the deadline, they wont get the same amount of offers they did back then. NYR want Larkin traded first so they can control the market"

On Larkin "Hes going no where till they get what they want. He quoted "If we dont get our price met on Larkin, he will be at training camp in September"

I think Larkin or his agent whiffed on going public. Yzerman will go down in flames to avoid the inmates run the asylum and the fans may hate Yzerman as a GM but they are going to be awful to Larkin unless he somehow walks it back and it's going to hold the team back and Yzerman won't care. Unless ownership wants to can Yzerman over this which is giving in to Larkin why give in to him to trade him?

When was the last time a top 5, or even top 10 pick was moved twice in the weeks heading up to the draft?

1999 was probably the closest I could think of. Vancouver got #4 from Chicago then made a couple of (unnecessary) trades to move up to #1 then back to #2 to get both Sedins. Tampa traded down from #1 to #4 then dealt the pick to the Rangers who wanted Pavel Brendl.

The trades this week reminded me more of my keeper league draft. Definitely more fun than usual. I kinda wish they had been able to wait until the draft to announce things since the spontaneous reaction of 10,000 people is always fun. But maybe Buffalo will pull something with pick #4 that'll get the locals excited.

I actually think the acquisition cost was quite reasonable for Columbus. I know Nichushkin has off the ice baggage but given the going rates of players, I’m a little surprised Colorado couldn’t get back a 1st (even if it’s 2027).

Columbus ownership is Calgary south. Can't accept a true rebuild and it destroys any chance they ever have of making noise in the playoffs, let alone making them.

Nichushkin is probably not going to be close to the guy he was at his best. I don't have any FOMO on not getting him.

Seattle east for me. Just Middle 6 players galore
I think Columbus has more of an identity on ice - they can be tough to play and have a lot of heart organizationally. Ditto for the Flames at times. Seattle really only surprised that one year and it's hard to know what they really are because of how many JAGs they have.
