Around The League Thread - 2026 Offseason

Chicago has $31M committed to next season. That will go up when Byram and Bedard sign a contract but they're still going to be ~$24M short of the floor. They also have a ton of UFAs this season, so if they are planning on being a clearing house at the deadline, they needed salary on their team - they only have two more retention slots.

Hes just Nemec with less playing time. Hes a pretty big disappointment so far
Good, he should be cheap then

He's got a much longer track record of success globally and a much shorter track record of failure. I still think there's something worth taking a chance on there, though I have to admit if Carolina is abandoning ship, it certainly gives me pause

And 2 years older than nemec.

Significantly worse player than Luke Hughes, and is 2 years older than Luke Hughes but somehow I'm seeing comments that he is worth a 9.5 mill contract and Luke is a bad contract at 9

Listening to the Buccigross+Servavalli podcast from this morning. At least according to Buccigross, San Jose was also in on Byram so that might have caused a bidding war. Buccigross implied that San Jose was dangling #9+more.

Also an interesting tidbit that Zayne Parekh told Calgary that he prefers to play on the left side. So maybe that doesn't completely take Calgary out of taking a RHD with their first. Although I would expect them to target a different position.

San Jose makes much more sense as a landing spot for Byram.

I just don't understand Chicago going for him, particularly at THAT price. They're still going to suck for the next few seasons.

More likely the opposite. Big, physical, skilled, overhyped defensmen who someone’s gonna overpay for. That’s the only reason Carolina’s shopping him, because they know he’s probably overrated.

Chicago has drafted 10 times in the first round at the last 4 drafts. At some point you have to try to move things along. Now, in a different environment, you'd see Chicago trying to dangle #4 for Brady Tkachuk and the like, but that's just not the way the NHL is operating these days - the superstars don't want to go to a team coming out of a rebuild, they want to go to a winner. Also, if they kept the 4th overall pick, Chicago would also get limited value out of an ELC because their team will be so inexpensive that they just cannot possibly spend up to the cap.

I do not think this is a good trade, but I understand the thought process.

Carolina already has Slavin and Miller on the left side and it doesn't make a lot of sense to pay top dollar for 3 guys. I don't see Carolina being interested in signing a long-term deal there.

Washington is definitely acting serious about re-energizing its window. They're barely coming out of the Ovechkin/Backstrom years and are winning again, must be nice.

He's about to be 25 and as you can see from the main board a bunch of idiots thinking him being a "rookie" means he's still got 4 more years to develop.
