Really strange about Vermette, I wonder what's going on there? I wouldn't mind him as a stop gap 3C. He'd be an upgrade over Shore/Dowd and would provide some veteran leadership.

STrange timing...unless they have someone in mind to sign /trade for and need the $$

And there would be a few teams interested for the depth/leadership reasons you stated. I wonder if he even makes it thru waivers.

Gagner signed for dirt cheap in CLB. 650k for a one year deal. I can see that working out pretty well for both sides. Apparently Vancouver was also interested, and at least two other teams.

I would have been fine with taking a flyer on Gagner in LA at that price. The system here wouldn't have been too fast for him, and the Kings' lineup isn't exactly bursting at the seams with skill.

So which one of you is the anonymous recipient of the $465,000.00 that Gretzky's rookie card sold for???

That’s the most ever paid for a hockey card for any player anywhere.

When I was a kid a friend of mine's brother had a Gretzky rookie card (same one as in the article). I got to hold it once, it was in a case about 1 inch thick. The Brother died in a car crash a decade ago and no one knows what happened to the card. My old friend thinks his brother had buried it somewhere for safe keeping. Always wanted to start digging up their backyard

One of my younger Canadian cousins collected a full set of hockey cards for 1 year only - and it happened to be the same year as Gretzky's RC. I was visiting several years ago and I asked him if he still had the card. He said he thought he did, so we looked thru his junk closet of old puzzles, toys, and games until we finally found the one shoebox with his hockey cards.

We found it pretty quickly, just stacked in order with the common player cards. It was very clean, with sharp corners, not quite 100% centered. I told my uncle the approximate value of the card (back then it was around $3000), and he told my cousin to sell it immediately. I'm not sure if he ever sold it.

I just dug through some of my old cards. Just found a Gretzky first year card. 1980, OPC, perfect shape.

Just not his rookie card :(

Patrick Roy leaving Avs? Damn, I want him there so that they will continue to be a mess.

Should have done it sooner; too many issues with players. Can't afford to lose more quality players , like Barrie or Duschene because of that. ROR was a lose for them...

Roy says vision of HC/VP needs to be aligned with organization and he must have say in decisions team makes, but those needs not being met.

But Roy felt timing was right given the philosophical differences. Doesn't know what his future holds for him at this point (con't)...

Given that he has another year on his deal with Avs, says might just take a year to enjoy life, which he's rarely had the chance to do...

Another candidate for the coach on Vegas list or maybe Quebec City eventually.

Don't see him in Vegas. He still hasn't proved anything at the NHL level. At the Jr level sure. But think Vegas will want a proven coach at the NHL level.

Agree on the "proven', from the choices so far, they want a good setup but finding a quality proven coach will be another thing...

but I think he will be considered for the Quebec job...when that occurs.

Another Vesey article today: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/...and_harvard_star_is_narrowing_list_for_monday

Over the past several days, numerous scouts, team officials and agents on hand for the Beantown Summer Classic have speculated on Vesey’s plans. One very well-informed area NHL scout expressed the belief that the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and Bruins will be the finalists.

The Buffalo Sabres have had exclusive negotiating rights with the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Vesey since June 20, when they acquired those rights from the Nashville Predators, who drafted him in the third round in 2012. While the Sabres haven’t been able to sign him, it’s possible they’ll be final candidates. The Toronto Maple Leafs, for whom Vesey’s father, ex-Bruin Jim, is a scout, have also been widely mentioned. And more than one source at NESC pegged the New Jersey Devils as a darkhorse contender.

Was a little surprised to see the Devils in the mix. Apparently assistant GM Tom Fitzgerald is a family friend of the Veseys. The Devils also have the draft rights to Vesey's college linemate Alex Kerfoot (Vesey mentions that they were close in his Player's Tribune piece), but Kerfoot is a long shot for the NHL at this point.

Still think it'll be tough to top the Blackhawks situation: Competitive team, big hole at LW next to Toews/Hossa.

come on devils!!

Vesey's agent mentioned how they had already gone over the various depth charts.

The Devils would be a strange fit since LW seems like the one position that is well-stocked. For the next few years, there's Hall/Cammalleri. Miles Wood is looking like a decent darkhorse prospect who might be ready after an AHL apprenticeship. John Quenneville was drafted as a center but mostly played LW for Brandon last year. And there are some who think Pavel Zacha will be a better winger than center.

Chicago probably has the best immediate opportunity and could sell Vesey on him having a chance to win the LW spot next to Toews/Hossa. Buffalo has a young team and could sell Vesey on playing on a line with his new BFF Jack Eichel. Boston has the hometown factor and a possible top 6 spot on the Krejci line.

before he went down with injury wasn't Cammy playing a lot of center?

That was a temporary measure when Oates/Stevens/Lou took over for DeBoer to finish 2014-15. He didn't look super comfortable at center.

Last season, Cammy went back to LW (and Henrique back to center from wing). Most of us are figuring they'll start Hall with Henrique if only to see if they have any leftover chemistry from their OHL days. Cammy will probably start off with Zajac.

good player, not a surprise

Thomas DiPauli (WSH)
Jimmy Mullin (TB)
Brian Cooper (ANA)

Quentin Shore (OTT)
Hunter Fejes (ARI)
Matthew Deblouw (CGY)
Colin Blackwell (SJ)

Sounds like Chicago is the favorite for Vessey. If they get him i think Hawks take the cup again. Its amazing what they are able to accomplish and continue to ice the rosters they do .
