Rumbling: FLA preparing eight-year, $60M-ish extension for Aaron Ekblad. He can sign any time after July 1. Team and agent decline comment.

that's a lot of pocket change for a 20 yr old...but in the long run, will save them money.

And considering what Yandle got...and how much more talented Eckblad is...

On the other hand, Horrid decision by Hexy...giving a goon on skates 3.5 per???? Brutal...As much as I was hoping he's be gone, Hexy loves him, his eyes lite up talking about him. Four more years of suffering thru the headhunter...

Gudas $13.4m over 4 yrs. Flyers overpaid.

Said this on the main board, but 328 more chances for Gudas to break someone's neck, plus playoffs (lol yeah right).

Flyers made it last year and should be better just with player development this year. However factor in they actually are starting to get some cap room so they maybe in on some UFA's, why the hell will they not be in the playoffs?

The Flyers only made the playoffs last year by playing at a ridiculous pace for the last 2 months and a lot of luck. And because Ghost was brought up, their streak is largely due to him. For the 4th straight year, they got off to a slow start, fell behind and were treading quicksand all year. They got lucky, is what happened, and were helped by the Jackets bad start and the Bruins failing. And it still went down to the last couple of days.

They are in a tough division and you have to be consistent from Oct onward.

For them to make the playoffs, they have finish ahead of one of the Caps, Pens, Isles, Rangers to get to 4th and there is no guarantee that would do it, to lock it down, they'd have to finish 3rd. I'd say the Hurricanes have just as good if not better odds at a wildcard. That's not even factoring in the other division.

Ghost makes them better, bringing up Provorov and possibly Konecky will help (although Hexy is reluctant to rush young players) they have 11.9 M now with 4 contracts to sign, not much if anything left for the high end free agent that they want and have been shopping for (top 6 LW and top 4 d) .
Of course, there are rumors that Hexy is working the phones to either move up or make a trade.

They are trending in the right direction, and now that the farm system is being restocked, they have good prospects coming along ,eventually they'll be fine. But i don't see it next year, division is just too tough right now.

I might be the only one in the world who thinks Ghost will sophomore slump. But he's a fantastic player and will continue to be.

I think the Flyers will need to take a step back before they step forward as their young prospects mature.

I think Ghost will take a step back. I don't think slump but not at the pace he produced last year. It's fairly normal for some 2nd year players to readjust. No pressure in the rookie year, but that 2nd yr, based on 1st yr success, there are expectations and pressure. And in his case, a lot of pressure. He's a good kid, has a great attitude and I think playing a full 82 will take a toll, like it does with some young players. It's a big adjustment, mentally and physically. I love his game, his speed and vision. Adding Provorov next year will be very exciting, to have 2 such talented young d with that kind of speed and IQ.

Flyers need to move some players out over the next year or 2 and bring up the younger guys. Even Nick Cousins was good when they gave him a shot at the end of the year. I hope he gets regular shifts, he's fast and has pretty good hands.

It's not easy turning around way too many years of mismanagement. But it's getting there.
Just having a good farm system again, and loads of picks this year to keep that going, is great.

Not a big shock, Vanek being bought out

http://www.startribune.com/thomas-v...calls-playing-for-the-wild-a-dream/384308141/

He's hoping for a fresh start next Friday...
"As long as I can believe in myself, like I do, I've been working hard already and I feel good. I think I can score 25, 30 goals in the right situation," Vanek said.

Bishop and the Flames

CGY working to get a goalie. Have had talks with TB on Bishop and with STL on Elliott. CGY has permission to talk to Bishop about extension.

Vanek going from Buff to NYI to Minn along with Moulson was such a strange group of events.

His Olympic showing too, what happened to him?

Add name of Jimmy Howard to Flames' goalie chase.Hearing Bishop wants long term extension if traded to Calgary.Hearing 7x7 asking price.

Bishop's nuts. Nobody, esp the Bolts with all the top end players needing contracts next year, is giving him 7 x 7....

Wouldn't go Howard though...

Treliving, Kekalainen and Chiarelli now deep in conversation.

EDM staff consulting with GM Peter Chiarelli at table. Something significant is being contemplated.

How would everyone feel about giving Vanek a 1 year cheap contract as a prove it contract

With everyone on this board looking for more speed, getting a slow, floaty guy whose best attribute is hands/scoring in close seems the antithesis of either 1. Kings bruising hockey as we know it AND 2. speedy, skilled hockey that many want.

I mean, I guess I wouldn't HATE it, but the guy does next to nothing when he's not scoring, hence the buyout.

Disagree. SOMEONE will pay that, and he's smart to ask for it now given his recent history/performance.

Will it be worth it though is a different story altogether.
