of course im just going back to the deals he had, also the 10 year deal for Yashin at 87.5 million

Yes - though at the time, Yashin was debatably worth the risk.

The wrist-break was later, and that was much of his decline.

This might be a hot take, but without taking any credit away from Lou's great work renovating the Islanders, time has proven that Garth Snow actually built a pretty solid foundation on the Island.

Barzal (and the G. Reinhart for a 1st trade that facilitated the pick), Lee, Nelson, Beauvillier, Sorokin, Toews (traded to Colorado), Pulock, Pelech, Czikas, Mayfield, originallt drafting Martin, Bailey.

Sometimes, an overnight success takes 10 years of work. Isles were also 100 point teams 2x years in a row when Tavares was still there around 2014 and 2015.

This needs to be in every thread in which NYI fans get too near talking about tea recipes doable from squeezing sweat from Lamoriello’s jock.

It shouldn't be a hot take.

It gets lost in the silly Lou v Dubas' debates but Snow's work gets overlooked way too much beacuse he made a lot of low key great team building moves while GM. I'm a bit surprised he hasn't been snatched up by another team yet as an AGM or something.

Garth Snow reminds me a bit of Jim Rutherford while in Hartford and Carolina. Being former goalie and a GM on a mom and pop franchise with a decade plus long leash to build his little program away from bright lights and big expectations. Not an amazing track record but a lot of good diligent work that goes underrated.

Looking back at our group. The Leafs need to get back to strong long term planning and management as a foundation.

On a side note about Garth, the 2013 CBA put in many cap rules in to avoid many tricks Garth used to get over the cap min(he basically will give players bonuses that were very hard to achieve, that way if a player had 2M in bonuses but only got 500k of it, the full 2M counted towards the cap)

The Dipietro deal I believe was covered by insurance for the first 7 years when DP was injured so score another win for el cheapo owner.

Very much so!

Not trying to throw a hot take….but the lack of appreciation for the good Snow did, the Cult of Lou getting cult-like and moving further west…..they make favourable conditions for becoming susceptible to the magnet that is the Vegas Golden Knights’ fanbase.

Can’t talk a word of smack on that roster building and I don’t have to get heaps of shit thrown at me for remembering who acquired over 60% of what makes the Isles as dangerous as they are.

McCrimmon’s just DONE IT that solidly. Sure, expansion draft - but handled right and at the right time.

This is true but that’s that got to do with what’s in the tweets?

I was responding to this part of the attachment. Lou didn't pay $40 million for 4 forwards, that's on Dubas...now we get to witness on how much Lou has turned the Isles around compared the work Dubas has been doing here.

Regardless about how you feel about Dubas, why do people think Lou would have made the Leafs better when in his 3 years and 2 drafts he added just 2 long term good NHLers (Matthews first overall and Andersen for a 1st)?

Pretending that this roster is all Lou is like applauding JP Morgan Chase for completing Sagrada Familia and saying “Gaudi….who?”

Lou's cap issues come from the bottom of the lineup, not the top.

The extra year on Marleau's deal was not great, though it was only a 3 year term...and that term on Zaitsev's deal was way too long, but I wouldn't say the AAV wasn't manageable...Zaitsev just got fed up playing in TO with the pressure, so he wanted to be moved...I don't think Lou would have paid as much for Nylander, Matthews and Marner, and he probably didn't think Tavares would be available as a UFA. Some folks feel that Lou hamstrung Dubas by giving Marleau that extra year, but Dubas didn't help himself by giving 4 forwards $40 million, and was forced to move Marleau.

I also recall Snow clearing cap problems using Vegas as the bog.

Take Grabovski and we’ll give you this pick….we’re keeping Pulock, Pelech, etc…..keeping Uncle Leo.

Dude did more for the Isles than people - largely Isles fans on HF - are willing to believe.

Always nice to see the Bruins get eliminated, but sadly that means the Isles are going to the final 4.

I know JT is not to blame this year at all and deserves our sympathies, but I wonder how he feels... the Isles seem boring af but they're getting it done in the playoffs where skill matters little.

I don't think the Isles will win the Cup or get to the Finals but hey, if they do, I'll definitely be happy for whatever success comes Uncle Leo's way. Love that guy even though I don't regret moving him.

So it's a coincidence that ever since Lou left, the Leafs have gotten exponentially worse and the Islanders have gotten exponentially better?

I respect Lou. He is a great GM.

But at the same time, correlation =/= causation.

Could just as easily say... So it's a coincidence that ever since Tavares left the Islanders and came to the Leafs, the Leafs have gotten exponentially worse and the Islanders have gotten exponentially better?

Idk, again, I think Lou's resume speaks for itself. But I don't know if I'd pin the Leafs woes on his departure. And while he definitely is responsible for some of the Isles' improvement, there are clearly other things to look at as well, including of course the coach.

The red herring is just that.

I’d allege that TML ownership stated a desire for an immediate cup while NYI was more patient.

It’s not Tavares; he was just caught in it. Two teams in different development stages more than anything.

Would I have preferred the Leafs have kept Lou for a few more years at the helm? Absolutely. I think he was doing a good job putting pieces in place, and the team's continued growth each season showed as such.

However, I get why Dubas was picked. I've said repeatedly I'm not a huge fan of his, and thought he has always been quite overrated. But figured he would learn and grow into the role. And I still think he will and needs more time. It takes years to build a team and see it come to fruition, so he gets a bit more leeway from me.

I will say though, as much as an ass as he may have been, I think Babcock would have had this team further ahead than the stagnation experienced since Keefe's hiring.

He won’t have time to learn and grow if there is a lack of progression.
He has until Matthews UFA or possibly less depending on some imploding Leaf thing.

The fan/media tirade today will be nothing compared to a next Zamboni driver/6 playoff fiasco.

Leafs could’ve avoided so much drama and narrative driving if they just f***ing bothered to show up in any one of Games 5, 6, and 7. Oh well bully for them. We didn’t tell them to play like crap.
