What's the point of talent, or skill, or speed? Might as well just build a team of 3rd liners

Do I need to google translate for a language you might understand better? Or do you honestly just not get it? It's pretty damn simple? This might set you off and ruin your night but I'll post it anyways. Speeza+Thornton 4 goals combined in 7 games being paid less than 2 million combined. Marner and Matthews 1 goal combined in 7 games being paid around 22 million combined. Now lets look at Nylander for example. Very talented player with a lot of skill and speed scored 5 goals in 7 games making 6.9 million. Isn't it crazy how the year Nylander actually starts to get engaged and attack the net and battling that he has his best playoff performance of his career. kinda crazy.

What? There's no plugs on the Islanders. Mikheyev, Engvall and Thornton were plugs. Islanders 4th line is hard-hitting and wears teams down.

Mikheyev and Engvall are definitely "plugs" but the playoffs is also a stage where 6'3" swift skating nobodies can catch fire and start chipping in dirty offense through hard work. Usually that happens when they build momentum playing their energy/grit/forecheck/disruption roles, earn more trust from the coach and get the ball rolling on temporarily expanded roles. There's a synergy that happens that isn't quite a science but it happens all the time. Just look at Joel Kiviranta and Joel Armia. Only problem is our coach doesn't generate any kind of chemistry or synergy with his bad blendering.

Honestly I dislike the Islanders more than the Bruins at this point. I know who the Bruins are: from their influential owner, their gaming of the system, their ability to cross the line without magically crossing it. Seriously though, their ability to consistently be a contender for a decade, and to get the best of us all those times, is impressive. I can respect that. The islanders can piss up a rope, except maybe Uncle Leo. Hope the Bolts send them packing.

Still had most points in a season under his reign and the core were puppies still.
Core was young, but he also had good NHL pieces and a ridiculous shootout record to do it. Pretty sure we had a better record this year too, but it's a little unfair to compare with the short year and screwy schedule.

And I'd also say we're sitting here complaining/pining for playoff success, not regular season wins

Lou's tactic is not to pay outlandish sums of money to the top talent. Same strategy that Tampa follows. Paying each guy a little less equals more talent on the bottom half of your team.

The book is out on this version of the Toronto Maple Leafs. I think every series they find themselves in for the foreseeable future will look like some combination of Columbus/Montreal because that's a proven blueprint to beat them. Not like a team is going to suddenly want to open it up for a light contact track meet vs the Leafs just to see what happens.
Is there another team in the north that could play that way against us? Definitely not a playoff team, maybe Ottawa?

You're too slow and reactionary like our GM. Some foresight is needed. It's no use making moves "that made sense at the time, but we just got unlucky it didn't work out".

Yeah, you're right. No more players under 6 feet!!!

Kucherov (5'11")
Point (5'10")
Gourde (5'9")
Coleman (5'11")
Johnson (5'8")

Look at these smurfs! How on earth do they win?!?

The level of frustration now bears no resemblance to his time here, in fact it was quite optimistic. Would we be in same place now, who knows, bit we’re here and they’re playing, again. Everything else is noise.

That's the question though, isn't it? Does Lou have this team competing instead if struggling to find their identity?

Someone better order Garth a nice, expensive steak. LOLOL

More responsible for the success on LI than too many want to admit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

yawn.... just proved to you what Lou did, you post this!!! move on... GM adding finishing pieces to get his team to the third round... well done by Lou

Yawn.

*Fact* is, NYI doesn’t get here without Snow’s picks.

I don’t do revisionist history. You shouldn’t either.

That is true/false logic.

The Islanders are impossible to root for- they are a dead puck era clutch/grab/trap team that's allowed to get away with everything because the refs swallow the whistle.

We might as well go back to the early 2000s where basically you could win with 10 Bobby Holiks.
That series was way better than anything the Leagfs have been involved in since the Caps series.

If Leafs aren't willing to part with their core, they need to build two forechecking lines and get a big body or two in the back end, preferably one with a shot. No small task to try and piece together, yet again.

These playoffs have been the most painful as a Leaf fan. Not just because of how and whom they lost to, but also the realization of just how more hungry other teams are and the way they are built.

After this many shots and perpetual failure, I fail to see how this Leafs teams DNA will be altered up top. I'm simply not convinced it can be a legit Cup threat when your support have the be more motivated than your stars, on a budget no less.

I suspect we’d have an identity. I thought he had one more year here and then was going to retire, certainly didn’t see this GM of the year routine with the Isles. For me, I kept him one more year to do the contracts, thought we gave Kyle the reigns to soon, given the enormity of the situation. I obviously still feel that way because IMO we were rolled by all three, but that’s that now.

Just stop, give Lou his due. Nobody is saying he walks on water and his utter genius crafted the roster. What Lou does do, strongly impart a winning culture, accountability and a hive mentality. It’s a winning formula, and it’s no accident what’s happening now that he took over the franchise.
All the things the Leafs currently lack.......
