Adam Johnson's family is throwing out bombs demanding "justice." It's sad when people process grief this way and unfortunately the police aren't immune to this kind of pressure.

Also worth considering what it means for them to arrest him. In Canada, that's usually the last step once the police have completed their investigation, but I believe in England it's more of an opportunity for them to question him as part of the investigation.

If the case goes to trial, it'll be an interesting one. A skate blade flailing high after a body check and accidentally slashing someone's neck isn't in the same planet as running a red light then ramming a car in an intersection.

I can't imagine there's a hope in hell of conviction. The defense will just show umpteen examples of skates going into the air after hits to show it's a normal hockey play that happened to have a freak result.

It's no different than if Raul Jimenez had died after he fractured his skull in a head clash in a Premier League game a couple years ago.

But that would get ugly - they would have to show videos of similar context, similar contact patterns etc... or that would be a simple pick apart by the prosecution

It would get so gross

Do you have a link to this? I haven't seen anything like this out there but I may have missed this.

This is my thought as well. The only difference here is that Petgrave does "charge" toward the the player trying to attempt an open-ice hit which people are thinking is the intent. And yes, the intent is likely to hit the player.

This is where I wonder if it's gotten this far on a really weak technicality. Was the attempted play against the rules? I mean yeah, it would have potentially been a charging penalty. Was it kind of reckless? I mean yeah, the same way any charge/open-ice hit is a bit reckless.

But logic needs to take over at some point and I assume it will. It's just going to take a bit longer than it should.

Wonder if so many people would come out of the woodwork to defend Cooke or Marchand if one of their dirty plays cost someone their life.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard and the British authorities should be embarrassed.

I have not watched the clip and I'm not going to but there isn't a single person whose opinion I respect who has watched this and decided that it's anything other than a total accident.
From some angles it looks like a karate kick, so I can understand why they've taken this action.

Thanks. I feel terrible for the family - especially having to watch that on a live stream like that. Girlfriend in the crowd. Awful.

Obviously I disagree with her interpretation of the play, but so be it.

huh, had no idea petgrave was in the canucks org through utica

just an all-around awful situation now being further compounded by the scum of the earth. his aunt's (grieving) response isn't even all that egregious, but the comments will be unfortunately taken fully out of context by racists claiming they too want "justice"

I mean, most people were actually defending Cooke when he cut Karlsson's tendon despite having the most notorious rap sheet in the league.

And how many people mocked Habs fans when they said to call the police over Chara plastering Pacioretty's face into a stanchion?

There was virtually zero contact, and certainly nothing that would lead to his leg being that high (he wasn't submarined).

Thug mistimed his hit and deliberately kicked his leg out to make some kind of contact with Johnson. Obviously didn't intend to kill him. But 100% negligent use of his skate.

I recall the vast majority of people calling out Cooke for that.

I do actually remember people on this board mocking me when I said Burrows should be suspended for the rest of the year (and into the next season if it hadn't been his retirement year) for kneeing Taylor Hall in the back of the head/neck though, so maybe this board just loves dirty dangerous plays. I wouldn't have had an argument against criminal charges in that instance either, especially if Hall had been injured by it, as it was nowhere near a hockey play.

I think I mentioned I watched the video after my son let me know he had accidentally come across it on Tiktok. I wanted to see what he had seen so I could talk to him about it.

It was a complete accident. Plain and simple. I realize the definition of manslaughter is that it was accidental, but still.

The racist morons out there on social media calling the guy a murderer at the absolute lowest common denominators of the Earth.

There absolutely needs to laws in place to protect players from manslaughter charges. Kind of like how you can’t expect privacy in public, you can’t expect to be from bodily harm in a game where you you are zooming around with blades on your feet trying to hit eachother.

Everyone one of these scary accidents seems to be from a player losing balance, falling over on one leg, and kicking the other leg out. My theory is that this is an involuntary muscle reflex. My guess is if you have one leg on the ground and falling over the brain kicks the other leg out to balance you. It’s completely involuntary. Muscles are attached to both motor and sensory neurons. The motor neurons would sense if there is too much force or if the muscle has been stretch too far, qnd can send a message to the brain to let the object go or contract another muscle to stop another muscle from stretching too far. While a sensory neuron receives messages from the brain, and muscles can contract to protect the body. For example putting your arms out when you fall. I'm not a doctor. Just a personal trainer giving his thoughts.

For sure these people are the scum of the earth. What sucks is that there are former players like Roenick and Carcillo that give credit to this shit.

If only Carcillo and Roenick had taken racial sensitivity classes, they would know that their eyes deceive them and that this is in fact a hockey play. Those darn internet racists getting into their heads and tricking them, very frightening stuff how powerful it is when they can even trick hockey experts...

You keep your expertise on the ice, we'll be the internet psychology experts. Sit down, Jeremy!

So they've arrived on sanctions, but still refuse to name the players? Yeesh.

From the tweet:

The panel’s decision is now being appealed. (Hockey Canada declined to say who is hearing the appeal.)

I was hoping Hockey Canada's new board could get it's shit together, but apparently vague statements and secrecy are too deeply ingrained.

Pathetic.

And I'm not surprised.

Disappointed as always, but not surprised.

i think it depends on how experts reconstruct the incident and what they can prove from that.

The first video was a bit unclear, and it seemed like an accidental collision that flipped him into Johnson. Now, with a clearer video, it's harder to see that he didn’t totally mean to make contact. He wasn't sent into the air by the first hit, and it appears he intentionally kicked his left leg at Johnson, most likely trying to slow him down as he’s cutting towards the middle. After watching it a couple of more times, I now believe he kicked with intent, though I'm sure he didn't mean for it to be so high or tragic. Im sure he didn’t mean to even hurt the guy. It was more like “Ah I’m gonna fall down, I’ll extend my leg in an effort to try and slow him down” and just went complete sideways. I mean for f*** sakes, people are acting like he meant to kill him or something.

You have to feel for both parties. Just truly tragic.

I hope Petgrave can find some sort of peace as well. It’s hard enough to have caused someone’s death, it’s another battle hearing your name associated with being a murderer. And with how subliminally racist this sport can be, being a person of colour adds a totally different dynamic to the situation. No doubt these racists will continue to come out of the woodwork and make it all about race.
