I think goaltending and defense are just too much of a question mark for Edmonton. That said, it would be hugely fortunate for them if LA passes Vegas. The Oilers should be able to take out LA in the first round, but a first round series against Vegas might be a problem for Edmonton.
Oilers have actually really turned around their defensive play to make it a strength this year. Their goaltending is going to be an issue though.

Mathematically unlikely but i could see Edmonton making a late run to overtake Vancouver. Canucks have looked pedestrian lately. Oilers have the 4 games in hand to make up ground.

Edmonton is a funny. Team. They can be very very streaky. They have won like 32 out of 41 games.

You watch some games and they look leaky, but as a whole, they have actually been good and in some games, just not got goaltending. They have probably lost 4/5 games where they got "Dostal'd"

They are at ES:

#3 best team in allowing the least shots per game (CAR and FLA better)
#3 in least scoring chances allowed ( CAR/FLA ahead)
#1 in least HD scoring chances allowed (They have 4/5 games in hand on teams too though)
#4 xGA (FLA/CAR/MIN ahead)

#1 in Scoring chances for
#1 in HDSCF for with 711
Toronto at #2 with 618

#1 by a lot in xGF
14th in SH%
2nd last in HD save % (Just a tad better than NJ)
About 18th in team save %

A lot of leaky play was that horrible start to the year. They were still generating a lot. They were leaky and couldn't get some saves either. They have been getting more saves lately when they screw up.

They will ride or die with goaltending and I don't trust it after seeing Skinner pulled like 4 times last year . The Oilers could actually use a legit sniper badly.

Penguins are almost mathematically eliminated from playoffs and its just beginning of March

LMAO
They have a better goal differential than Philly and Tampa and yet just can't seem to pull together a few wins when it seems like they're getting back into the race.

Weird year for a team that has had decent enough goaltending and controls the play fairly well.

Honest question that's been asked to you a million times. Why are you still here posting on this board? You're honestly a bigger dubas shill than Jonas and at that point I'm a bit impressed. Maybe you are Jonas though. He seems like the type of person that would do this type of stuff on here. When will you give the act up and not feel the need to defend dubas and the Pens anytime anyone says something remotely negative about them? It's almost a year and you're still going strong. Will you do it until dubas is gone from pitts? Until Tre is gone from here? Or will you only ever stop if there's a reunion between the leafs and dubas?
Just curious.

Why does it bother you? Who cares if he still likes Dubas? There are 20 or so posts bashing him in the past few pages. The odd post that has a different POV is at least something different to read.

It just gets old seeing someone say anything remotely negative about Dubas or Pitts and then seeing him come in and go on for pages defending them. He doesn't just do it in the around the league thread, he will do it in any thread on this board. Why do you have so much attachment to someone that isnt here anymore? Why do you feel the need to defend their every move with another club? Its just weird, and I couldnt imagine being a fan of the Leafs and doing that to anyone that leaves this organization. So I'm just curious why he so strongly feels the need to come to his defence time and time again and how long will he keep it up for. So far this year he seems like a bigger fan of Dubas than the Leafs.

Fair enough.

I often wonder why people still bring him up in a negative fashion, or at all still.

I guess he will still be talked about in some threads, as long as he continues to be a GM in the league.

Thanks for your reply. I was genuinely curious

You can lament it all you want but Hyman didn’t show this level of finish with the Leafs, no one saw him taking massive offensive leaps into his 30’s

And yes he had injuries for two of the playoff runs but that doesnt explain the other 3 where he wasn’t much of a factor. Had he shown to be more of an impact player in the playoffs I imagine the Leafs make a higher pitch to keep him.

Massive amounts hindsight
Is it really hindsight if you thought we’d regret it at the time? My lament never computed 50 goals, but that really doesn’t matter why we argued he was a valuable piece to keep, which he’s was. And, you could see he wasn’t “stone hands” as argued here relentlessly.

To me, it's a strange obsession on both sides of the argument. People who hate him seem to conflate "lack of toughness" as the reason for why the Leafs didn't win under him, and they can point to Ryan Reaves and this year's record as validation for that. Meanwhile, people who loved him spent the first half of this season lamenting virtually every player Treliving brought in this season as validation for their position. As always, the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think both guys have done some good things (most notably for Dubas, not caving under the pressure to trade one of the star players), and both guys have done some not so great things. My guess is that Treliving will simply end up with the good fortune of inheriting a goalie (Woll) that will end up being the difference between this team winning and those prior teams losing, with the irony being that neither Dubas nor Treliving can take credit for him.

A+++

There were some diehard Leaf fans that took the position that not keeping him was going to be a big mistake.

Zach Hyman's game is built around consistent hard work and effort and that gets rewarded particularly come playoff time.

On many nights Hyman was the straw that stirred the Leafs drink, not just based on production alone, but because his work ethic drew his teammates into the fight.

There is a well known phrase by a former NHL coach,.

In hindsight now Hyman at $5 mil vs Tavaras at $11 mil based on actual statistical results serves as validation for those that were believers from the start. :)

It also gets old, how amusingly angry people are, as if Dubas stole their dog or something. It's like a personal grudge, and just often lacks objectivity. Like the guy didn't achieve the objective... sure, but the majority of these posts are just angry bros, venting their personal hurt level.

This phrase is so misused and is not even true.

This only applies if skill doesn't work.

In almost every sport the most skilled are the hardest working. It's how they become the best.

Problem this team has had is that their "will" can be easily taken away (how many years ago did Foligno say this?). My hope is that in time Tre will change that. I see some progress this year but he needs more time.

He was basically a 30 goal scorer for us the last two seasons, not exactly a scrub. Then understand his role digging pucks, defensively, pretty attractive player.
