It’s in their best interest to work with the Sens, it’s really the only game in town. I don’t listen a lot anymore but it’s a bare bones operation and likely on its last legs. Melnyk seemed very vindictive and punished those who wouldn’t toady to him a la Brent Wallace. Maybe the new owner does better
Melnyk was an absolute ass. There are way too many stories, it’s why Garrioch still had such a long reign, Steve Simmons of Ottawa. Especially during their red line year was it called ?

I don't think Florida is much of a risk at this point. Similar to Tampa last season, I can see Florida settling into third in the division and a first round rematch against Boston.

I think they're better than Boston. Certainly much deeper up front. Wouldn't shock me if the division title came down to the wire between the 3 teams

I can see Boston and Toronto staying close to one another for most of the season, but I think Florida will drop off. In any event, like last season, the top three in this division will be decided by early in the new year. The rest of the division is just bad. Detroit has almost given back the entirety of its good start already. Other than flipping Toronto and Boston, and Florida and Tampa, the rest of the division will probably look pretty much the same as last season.

Meanwhile, remind me again of how tough the Atlantic division is? Detroit is back to sucking apples again, Ottawa, Buffalo and Montreal are Ottawa, Buffalo and Montreal, they have now been joined by a mediocre Tampa team, and Florida and Boston have looked very ordinary outside of short hot streaks. It's turning into one of the softest divisions in the league.

For all the talk of our empty cupboards, Boston Tampa and Florida don’t have 1sts and Cowan would be their best prospect. Even if we stand pat on our 1st at the deadline we can probably beat them in the rental market.

We also have more cap space with Klingberg out. Don’t necessarily need retention

Bolts Bruins for good reason. Cats are just a mess.

I'd be most worried about Devils Kings in the bidding wars. And Sabres Wings if they look to accelerate things.

We have enough to enter the conversation, but we'd be decimated beating out a blue chip offer.

I'm not against moving our 1st, haven't been against that since 2017, However I'm not sure it needs to happen.

Will Tanev cost a 1st? I'm not convinced he does especially given what Zadorov cost Vancouver, Tanev will likely cost more but I'm not sure his price is so much more that It's a 1st round pick compared to a 3rd and 5th.

If Arizona falls out, I'd be targeting Matt Dumba too, and I don't think he'd cost a 1st but I do think he'd be a significant addition.

At the same time if Carolina goalie issues cause them to fall out and Bret Pesce becomes available you put that 1st round pick on the table because Brett Pesce would be the PERFECT partner for Rielly.

Same thing with Hanafin especially if he comes with an extension ready to be signed.

EVERY single pick and EVERY single prospect should be available but, the type of D we need may not cost a 1st.

I don’t think we need to move a first, just looking at our top end rivals prospect pools + picks available something like Niemela/Voit/Minten/one of the developed Marlies is more then they can afford to spend short of a full pejorative slur move like trading Poitras/Lohrei for a rental. Maybe Detroit or NJ makes a splash but I would imagine that’s for a tier of long-term extension RFA that we’re not in the market for in the first place. Carolina is the only established contender in the East that could out-bid us without decimating their pipeline.

Most likely outcome is that no one makes a big move and we scoop up a Tanev level upgrade.

I don't think Boston will repeat what they did last season at the deadline given how badly it backfired on them. I'm sure they will add a forward, but I bet internally they are more realistic about their chances this year.

I think more of the trades will come from the teams in the west.

I would only add that the Leafs, despite playing much better as of late are still no better than 10th overall in regulation hockey, 4th in the East. On the other hand, two of the teams ahead of us in that category are Boston and Florida so for the moment, the Atlantic is still the toughest division in the East. :)

What reason does Bos have? They have fired away all their picks in the past 3 years for the exact same amount of playoff round wins as the Leafs. Go to 8 years and they have missed the playoffs twice, lost in the first round 3 times, lost in the second round twice and had their run to the Cup 6 years ago.

I think as the season goes on Boston will settle into second place in the division, and I think that will be just fine with them. My guess is that their days of being big buyers at the deadline are on pause for the next few years as they retool their lineup. If they were aggressive, they should be looking to move Ullmark this season as that is cap space they desperately need for a first line centre.

You think we win the division? Or Florida?

I give you points for consistency. I'll tip my glass to you when the Leafs pass the Bruins, even with all of those OT wins...

I'm consistent in trying to be objective, hopefully that'll never change. And I've never said the Leafs won't pass the Bruins so what's the big deal anyway?

And as I've said before, I care very little about 1st place, what I do care about is going deep in the playoffs.

I have zero reason to trust you. No offence, I enjoy your posts but from what I've seen, you're one of the biggest homers I've ever seen posting here and your opinions are anything but objective.
I'm actually very objective. I just don't think much of most Eastern conference teams, and my belief that the Leafs will win the Atlantic, and probably the conference, has as much to do with that fact as it does with the Leafs themselves. I am one of the few who is concerned with the idea of relying on Woll through 4 rounds of the playoffs. I think most people are being far too optimistic in that regard. What I don't worry about is how the Leafs won games in October and November, because those games are meaningless other than for the purposes of simply collecting points.

Zadorov a bottom pairing guy vs Tanev a guy who can shutdown and is a covetted RD?

Its gonna cost a 1st and more, he might be the biggest bidding war of the deadline outside of any decent goalie becoming available
