Sounds just like what went on here. I honestly cant believe this dude wanted Karlsson on the Leafs... Cant even rack my brain around what this team would look like adding another 10m+ guy. Would have certainly made re-signing Nylander this season even more difficult.

Theyre not going to be serious playoffs threats for the next 5-10 years most likely. But its probably hard to pass up like 50m.
And thus pretty silly for anyone to criticize the guy for taking the job. I doubt anyone in that organization has illusions about what they are. Once they had resigned Malkin and Letang, there was clearly going to be no tearing things down. Dubas gave up mostly nothing for EK, and actually gained cap space in the process, so it wasn't a franchise-crippling move. No doubt he knows that once Crosby retires he will need to start turning the team over, but as long as he has ownership on side with that approach I don't see the problem. Tampa is probably going in a similar direction, although we will see what they do with Stamkos this season.

Will be really interested to see what they do with Guentzel who is a UFA at the end of the year. He should be getting 8+ on his next deal. If they deal him and dont re-sign, then their odds making the playoffs next year go down even more. But if they re-sign him, then they might not get much when they ultimately try and move him.

Dubas main mistake was taking the Penguins job. He really did the only thing you could there, go all in with an aging core. It’s not a shock it’s not working out, but there really wasn’t a lot of other options either.

Had Dubas waited, he might have got consideration for the Ottawa job, or another team further along in the process.

Or maybe he hopes to rebuild Penguins in a year or so… who knows, but taking that job was a head scratcher for me. Pittsburgh typically doesn’t support the team in down periods either.
No chance Ottawa or any other team really would have paid him so much.

I don't remember anyone criticizing Dubas for taking the job, especially when the majority here wanted him gone. They'd have signed the contract for him themselves and asked the Pens to throw in even more $$$ if Dubas turned it down.

He would have taken the Pittsburgh job way over the Ottawa one. More money involved and a lot more prestige. The teams obviously are at different trends but it's not like he took an impossible task. I think a lot of the Pens issues aren't just because they are older.

He spent roughly 25M of the cap space on Smith, Karlsson, Graves and Jarry, and signed a ton of depth players in hopes of finding a gem, and now added Puljujarvi. Jarry has been pretty good lately, Karlsson is as advertised... but the rest have been pretty iffy. It's just a weirdly constructed team at this time. They had plenty of money and assets to play around and retool the team back into contention, but a lot of the moves haven't worked out.

People are too blinded by their obsession with Dubas

If anyone thinks ownership would have let any new GM come in and rebuild they're not paying attention

How Dubas decided to build the roster out this summer is one thing, but he never would've been given the greenlight to do anything other than squeeze out Crosby and Malkin's last years. And that's true for any one who got the job.

Actively (and suddenly) rooting the Pens to fail or pretending they were ready to call it quits on Crosby's team is very... obvious

Right. Any GM they hired would have had the same handcuffs, so the decision was to either continue to flounder and not spend any additional assets while waiting for Crosby et al to retire in a few years, or take a chance and see if another decent season or two could be had before they retire. It's certainly not working right now, and while Pittsburgh might ultimately make the playoffs as a wild card, they are unlikely to even get out of the first round.

I doubt Karlsson is part of any problem there.

Apparently Pens fans are ripping Sullivan saying he's holding back Karlsson and the entire team.

I'm a Karlsson fan and like the excitement he brings as an offensive defenseman, but trying to marry his game to a pre-existing team structure is probably more of a headache and game of trade offs.

Alpha dog Karlsson on a team like Ottawa or last year's Sharks team is an individual force. But for him to do it all himself on a team with other big stars? I dunno how well that works. To use the James Harden quote, he's not a system player. He's the system. At 33 and surgically repaired, is that a good thing?

Nasty hit by Cousins. Gud jumped to his feet pretty quick and engaged him so it's a combination of dirty hit and a bit of a sell job.
Major is under review.

Edit: reduced to a minor. Gudbrannson will be looking for revenge. :eek2:

Reinhart sure knows how to have a career year in a UFA year.

Buffalo blew it with him
