After watching the MTL-BUF overtime, I'd rather they go back to 4-on-4. More players get to play, and there is far less backing out of the offensive zone to keep possession. It looks more like hockey than shinny. 4-on-4 might also make it easier to convince the NHLPA to extend OT.

They moved to 3 on 3 to cut down on the shootouts. I wonder if the data supports this now that we have a big sample size since 3 on 3 came into effect

Pens are so bad.

They shouldn't be THAT bad.

They have one the worst bottom 6'es in the league. Bit funny listening to Dubas summer speech about the bottom 6 he build, and then watching how it actually perform when season start.

Too much old legs added. I don't think they will make the playoffs.

I think they are the oldest team in the league

Who knew signing the so-called greatest defenseman ever (rather than a D who can actually defend) wouldn't turn out so well?

Feels good seeing Dubas bury another team rather than ours.

Being so emphatic with the idea of trying to make a cap and team structure that has no prior history of success wasn't a good move.
Except that's not what that statement meant. The price of our core RFAs went up after that point, and yet with normal progression of the cap, we'd still be in the low 40% range with our core four right now, which is not historically unique. Having elite players, and having big cap expenditures on a smaller potion of the team and supporting them with cheaper depth has a ton of prior history of success. Getting the amount of impact that we get out of the portion of the cap our top players take up has a lot of prior history of success.

Having a positive outlook and projecting confidence about your ability and desire to sign your best players when given a toxic question is not unusual or bad. Keeping the best and some of the most cap efficient players on your team is not bad, or detrimental to success. It's what every team does.

They had a players only closed door meeting a few games back that did nothing. They should have moved on from Sullivan ages ago but he's loved by the new ownership. I've also heard that Crosby, Malkin and Letang all wanted him back and didn't want to start over with a new coach.

You reap what you sow.

I'm not a Dubas lover or hater but when ownership tells you they are all in and in "win now" mode, you can't truly do what you want to do.

Having said that though, Dubas knew that going in and still wanted the job.

Well said. I'm not a Dubas supporter, but whoever took that job in Pittsburgh was going to have their hands tied to a certain extent considering players and ownership had no desire to rebuild.

This current situation gives Dubas the most rope also, allow the vets to do it their way. Within another 1-2 seasons that team will be selling off assets and kicking off a rebuild.

Islanders on the same 7-1-2 streak as Leafs and 13th. in P%.

Yep. If they miss the playoffs he can simply say:

"Hey, this is what you guys wanted me to do even though I suggested a different plan because I could see this aging core missing the playoffs."

Pens are now closer to the bottom of the conference (3 points) than they are a playoff spot. (6 points)

They really need to go on a 3-4 game winning streak ASAP in order to get back into it.

Win out the games in hand and the Leafs are only 3 points back of Boston. That didn’t seem likely only a month ago.
It always seemed likely if people looked at the schedule a month ago. The Leafs are in the middle of a butter soft part of their schedule, and to their credit they are piling on points, just as Boston did at the start of the season with its schedule. The Leafs' schedule turns more difficult as we get to March, but my belief is that by that point they will have already put up enough points to pass Boston.

47 points for Kucherov already. Yikes!
It should be an interesting race between him and McDavid for the Ross.

Kucherov has a 13 point lead but McDavid has 5 games in hand.

McDavid also has 21 points in his last 8 games.

Yep and the season was only 20 games done at that point and the Bruins were going to cool off as well. Every team gets into a slump at some point.

If people think the Leafs have injuries, the Islanders are without their two most dependable defensemen in Pelech and Pulock, both with long-term injuries. I think we will see that team start to stumble pretty badly. The Leafs should be able to shut them down pretty well on Monday.

Dubas sacrificed what cap space he had to get Karlsson and cheating out on a bottom six of names I barely recognize..
Gregor has half the goals his 4 bottom 6 adds have combined. And that's with stuck with Reaves and previously dead version of Kampf

Except, their starter isn't carrying a .886 Sv%.

So when they signed him do you think he said (remember JFj) we need to rebuild?

Probably got the JFj treatment, no rebuild while Crosby and Malkin are on their last legs.

And Karlsson is their only double-digit. Contract ends after he completes his 36 year old season.

Decent goalie stats.
Age has to catch up with them.

As with the team in general, give Samsonov some time and I think we will see his save percentage climb well above .900. Everyone here is so painfully quick to write people off.

Not writing anyone off, just stating the facts. Those numbers are not my opinion, and I provide no analysis. Others can debate merits of the goalies.

Sometimes facts are just facts.

Dubas main mistake was taking the Penguins job. He really did the only thing you could there, go all in with an aging core. It’s not a shock it’s not working out, but there really wasn’t a lot of other options either.

Had Dubas waited, he might have got consideration for the Ottawa job, or another team further along in the process.

Or maybe he hopes to rebuild Penguins in a year or so… who knows, but taking that job was a head scratcher for me. Pittsburgh typically doesn’t support the team in down periods either.

Sounds just like what went on here. I honestly cant believe this dude wanted Karlsson on the Leafs... Cant even rack my brain around what this team would look like adding another 10m+ guy. Would have certainly made re-signing Nylander this season even more difficult.

Theyre not going to be serious playoffs threats for the next 5-10 years most likely. But its probably hard to pass up like 50m.

This sounds like usual "his hands were/are tied" to allow him to make all the bad moves he wants. Whatever the situation, his plan was no good.

I also think he would have traded Marner as well if he stuck around.
