tampa has 18 contracts and $2.9 million in space. Sergachev, Cernak, and Cirelli are RFAs and don't count as contracts.

While I agree that tampa would rather lose Cirelli, he alone is not going to solve their cap issues. It would have to be Cirelli and Johnson (no retention at all) to get them to $7.9 million in space on 17 contracts, but that would still leave them vulnerable to an offer sheet on sergachev and cernak both.

3 contracts at min. salary gets them to 20 contracts (plus the two RFAs) and $5.8 million to split between Cernak and Sergachev.

One of them would get a raise off the $4,363,095 2nd round offer sheet compensation.

I'm not sure that's how you look at that though. Johnson is on a much stronger team, and while there isn't a maximum number of goals to be score in a game, today's NHL is much more systemic than it used to be. If you score enough goals early, then you just play your system, and kill the clock. Even with better matchups due to superior top end talent, if TB is up 3-0 in the 1st, they don't have to kill themselves to make it 7-0.

The Kings have no need for Johnson, and I don't think TB could or would offer enough for the Kings to take the contract, if it were even possible for the Kings to discuss such a deal.

Sure, but TB scored 66 more goals than LA through 70 games last year, that's a tremendous difference. The quality of the other 4 guys on the ice with him is going to be higher than if he were on the 2nd or 3rd line in LA. And how often were they really up 3-0 in the first? They averaged 3.47 GPG and 2.77 GAPG, that suggests to me that as good as they are the majority of their games are still close. They're still trying to score that 3rd or 4th goal to put the game away.

In the end, Brown is still playing almost all his minutes against his opponents top D pairs, whereas Johnson's facing the 2nd or 3rd pair for the majority of his. Either way, its semantics when we both agree the player isn't worth the contract.

Sergachev’s agent has to push him the offer sheet route.

Even if they trade Cernak, Cirelli, and Johnson and he gets a $5M bridge, he just ain’t getting paid in Tampa.

He will be stuck on the 2nd pair with replacement level partners, and when those NMC contracts finally start dropping off the books, Point gets the money cuz goals and flair.

If there was ever a time for an offer sheet, this is the right target.

I agree but I also think TB has to consider moving him for quality assets since he’s 3rd on their LHD depth chart. Unless they can move McDonagh or Sergachev plays his off side, Sergachev wont get as many minutes and is a luxury they can’t afford. They could trade him for a kings ransom and dump salary elsewhere.

How much is he worth? we're not taking a 1,2, 3 picks type of situation with him.

LaBanc got bank from the Sharks. 4yr, 18.9 mil for a guy who never scored more than 20. WTF?

I don't think I'm alone, but I think there was a wink wink handshake agreement with Labanc taking a below market 1 year, 1 mil deal last year to get around the cap.

I'm surprised Toffoli hasn't signed. Thought he'd be gone on day one.

Winger market probably being held up while Hall is making his decision. Teams that miss out on Hall will want to circle back on 2nd tier wingers like Hoffman, Toffoli, etc.

Didn’t Mayor compare Cernak’s LA situation to a bit like Lias Anderson in New York? Mostly as it wasn’t a good fit with each other.

I certainly think he had the wink wink, but around the cap isn't the right term. Or the right tone, or something. He got a raise from his ELC. SJ was still trying to load up with vets and win. He took a team friendly deal, which pretty much every fan of every team wants every player to do. Pre-2013 back diving contracts with the fake years at the end, that was getting around the cap.

It completely blew up in SJ's face, and they still honored the handshake.

Hagelin, Dowd, LaDue. Schilling and Maillet were on the Reign. They did have Kovalchuk. What's up with the Caps?

That doesn’t make any sense though. Cernak was drafted in 2015 and dealt in 2017 while he was still in juniors. The Kings also signed him to an entry-level contract shortly after drafting him. That was just bad asset management.

Yep. Straight up. They used a high 2nd on him and traded him in the Bishop deal like he was a low 5th rounder. They were so wrong on their evaluation his talent. Stevie Y knew what they had and they couldn't believe how good he was in his first camp with Tampa. I think DL just said, pick anyone but Gravel.

I really hope the Kings get smart and do something the opposite to this with Iafollo.

Two years at 7M AAV which expires just as the kids are coming off RFA's, followed by 4 years at 3M AAV "hometown discount"
