I'm fine with that if the payoff is actual insight into a team's season and players.

I don't tune in to these games to be pandered to which I realize puts me square in the minority... I want to know what's going on and a bunch of "Well the losing team needs to be mentally tougher and more systematically composed" is.... not for me.

Gimme the actual details and story of the two teams involved in this series... even if the losing team is sad.

TEACH ME SOMETHING.
It’s a production issue as much as a commentary one. In the Premier League the commentators are often ex-player that know a lot about what is going on. However there is a machine behind them providing a bucket of information constantly. So for example if an unknown young player plays they get given his life story so they can Teach you (which I agree is very important).

I sat in the Sky broadcast truck 30 years ago for a hockey game, which was incredible. I sat there helping record game stats, got to put some captions on screen (I was told which button to press, it wasn’t complicated but felt very cool) and it was a great experience. However even for a relatively low key event, that Sky put very little effort into, there were researchers giving the commentary team information to allow them to round things out.

I really expected McDavid would have a super human series to solidify his legacy. Pretty surprising the series are pretty much done now.

Honestly, looking at the panthers roster to compare to the Stars.. I’d give them about equal in offensive ability. I think the real difference here is just one team had good enough coaching to shut down the oilers PP while also playing very structured.

Difference maker here vs Dallas is just that.

Pretty crazy because there is not a big difference in ability from Dallas to Florida yet the Oilers don’t have a single win

Dallas is also....relatively young.....compared to Florida, they were going to make more mistakes, Dallas is going to be huge the next 3-4 years as those players mature.

I think this has more to do with my feelings about "expertise" on any specific topic than it does someone's ability to consumer storylines.

It takes a lot of work paying attention to everything that happens with one team. Sure I could sit someone down and give them the broad strokes but that won't fill in the blanks, that won't give them a real sense of what the team is or who the player are.

I just think there's only so many hours in the day.

When I listen to a broadcast or a podcast or a TED Talk or whatever... I want an expert that knows their expertise isn't worth what other people think it is.

One of the reasons I really enjoy Bill Simmons is that I know nothing about basketball so the fact that he carries himself with supreme confidence allows me to pretend that he's an expert... when the reality is I don't believe that anybody can be as supremely knowledgable as he claims to be about basketball.

Same thing with PTI... I love Kornheiser and WIlbon but as soon as they start talking about hockey I realize

Oh.... they have no idea what they're talking about and it's probably true about every other sport I just happen to know in that case that they dont know what they're talking about.

When national platformers talk about the Kings I realize "oh... they don't know what they're talking about"

that was rambling. I hope that made any sense at all.
A number of years ago (5?) NHL tv network had a PHENOMENAL series on play-by-play announcers. They followed a classic guy around for a day leading to a game that night. They had Bob Mller, Rick Jeanneret, and other. It was absolutely perfect for an announcing geek like me. I have looked for it everywhere and can't find it. FANTASTIC. I should have taped it.

I’m not surprised at McDavid. He’s so far showing what I’ve always said in many posts. Yes he’s the best player in the game but he’s yet to show he’s truly generational. It’s such an overused term.

Gretzky in ‘93 out the Kings on his back to beat Toronto. The better team lost because Gretzky was able to dominate. Gretzky was so underrated defensively, when he had to back check he did. He was great at steals from the back check too.

Maybe McDavid can find another gear and dig deep. Maybe he can elevate his game to generational levels because the talent is there. However he needs to deliver because it’s more than just good numbers (which are not as dominant as 66 or 99 on the same consistent basis).

Average age wise, I think Dallas is actually just a tad older, but those young core players the Stars have assembled are a handful and should be a force for years to come.

Mavrik Bourque will likely assume a full time roll next year which adds another weapon. Fun team to watch.

Take Pavelski and Suter out of it lmao...but yea....the core for Dallas is younger than the core for FL, they will learn and get there absolutely.....

Respectfully: what the f***? He has put together some of the most impressive regular season and playoff runs in decades, and has single handedly dragged the Oilers to playoff series victories. 3 games against a better team doesn’t somehow make him not generational. McDavid is third ALL-TIME in regular season and playoff points per game behind Gretzky and Lemieux. That's such an odd take.

Nice to see Barkov with a bounce back game after that BS headshot by Divesaitl last game. EDM is for sure finished, just a matter of when. Panthers just have too much depth and a great D core, plus Bob is on a mission. Best way to get back at cheap shots are to just score goals and win. Florida has shut down every team's top players throughout the playoffs. Also love seeing the Corey Perry curse continue.

My point is that it’s not about points, it’s also about doing what you have to for wins. The game is setup to make point scoring easier than it has ever been, so ppg don’t impress me. Feasting on us for example counts for little when we pretty much made it easy. In cricket he’s what you call a flat track bully. I’ve watched both of McDrai only bust their butts when on the power play in games they are getting outplayed then once they get points, take the rest of the night off. So no, to me that’s not generational. I don’t deny he’s the best player in the game.

I don’t think he is generational but I have a much higher bar than most, as generational means one in roughly every 20 years. As a term it gets used far too frequently.

Despite the result, it still bothers me that the league didn’t have the sack to suspend Draisaitl like he deserved. Terrible message sent. And similar to the refs, the whole “we don’t want to decide the game” thing is just BS. You ARE deciding the game by not enforcing the rules.

Agree 100%, he is the best player since prime-Lemieux, and to me it's not even close.

Things people don't consider, there are 32 teams in the league now, there is a salary cap, teams don't have control over assets until age 31 like they did for many of these great players. There are waaaaaaay less teams now that are "drawing dead" (to use a poker term) than there were for Gretzky and Lemieux.

I do agree with the sentiment that the term generational gets thrown around to much, but for him it's warranted. The stuff this guy does with the puck on his stick, with the speed he does it is unprecedented, but this is the NHL, it's not like having a LeBron James in basketball or a Tom Brady in football where one guy can win a championship largely on his own. These Oiler teams have gotten better, but this wouldn't even be a playoff team if you took him off the roster, with him they are in the final, that is a big difference for an individual to make in this sport.

I really expected McDavid would have a super human series to solidify his legacy. Pretty surprising the series are pretty much done now.

The two biggest differences between Dallas and Florida are Barkov and coaching. DeBoer is a great coach, but Maurice is coaching at a different level right now, it's just genius level, like Bill Belichick or Danny Hurley. He is pushing all the right buttons and neutralizing the strengths of the Oilers like nobody else has. These two runs have been the most impressive coaching display I can ever remember in the NHL.

Dallas is like the Kings on steroids, but this is another reason why I HATE the Kings roster construction and so many of the things Blake has done. Depth and coming at you in waves doesn't make up for not having an elite 1C, the 1C is just so important to winning in the playoffs. Crosby, Toews, Kopitar etc. Had the Kings been properly constructed we would have had a chance to end up with a guy like this in the 2023 draft, but Blake decided to push all of his chips into the middle without the most important part of a roster, instead opting for the quantity over quality roster construction, which can be achieved quicker but has historically produced crappier playoff results.

When push came to shove Dallas had nobody to do one of two things they needed to win that series, take over offensively or neutralize McDavid.

I nearly got banned last year for arguing with Oiler fans. They are next level. I think part of the issue is that TSN and Canadian markets are desperate for a Canadian champ. So much hype is put on them. They have great players but are not a well constructed team. Their best addition was Ekholm honestly. He is the type you need to win. I don’t care what anyone says either, McDavid has elevated the stats of guys like Bouchard and Hyman. Good players yes, made better by the best player in the game.

LA did not measure up well against Edmonton and hasn’t for three years in a row. This has benefited the Oilers runs too.

Panthers have more depth on D

and sorry but Florida doesn't really have Seguin / Duchene types on their roster in significant roles either

Also, if you watched Oettinger during the playoffs, this was the year to conclude he might be a tad overrated

Whereas Bobrovsky, solidified his elite status

To me, there are big differences between the Panthers & Stars however i wouldn't even make this comparison in reference to the Oilers' struggles, because the reality is this:
Demko in?
Boeser in?
Oilers out
Fact

Even if the Oilers get swept tomorrow, there's a good case to be made for McDavid winning the Conn Smythe this season. He's been that good. Just an absolutely amazing player to watch. The best forward to play the game in a generation. Electrifying every time he's on the ice.
