Let’s face facts. BLuc’s biggest splash to date is Pierre. He is the peak of their roster construction. And we’ve all seen what that means when he is in his prime and can’t beat out old Kopitar and elite scrub Danault.

Yeah, I feel the same in a sense, I wouldn't have really gone there in the first place, but after being there for so long and given Arizona had been such a growing market due to 'lower' cost of living over the past decade or two and the fanbase became more established I wanted it to work.

I am puzzled though that they would choose SLC as the next destination though. I know they have been testing the market, but they are going to need to lean heavily on early adoption and dedication of the fanbase given the lower population market. The Utah Jazz are in the middle of the league in attendance and I just can't see it as a glistening hopeful place for hockey to flourish. Feels like replacing one mistake with potentially another.
The Jazz are 29-50 and in a rebuild so being middle of the pack isn't too shabby. They are currently 20-20 at home and are trying to make it ten straight seasons of over .500 basketball at home. After last season, they were supposedly tied for the most season of over .500 basketball at home in NBA history with 39, although that feels like it would be since the Jazz moved to Utah.

Regardless, it's always been a tough place to play for basketball and the crowd shows up even when they are bad and really shows up when they are good.

Now, it has also been the only show in town when it comes to the Big 4 so adding another option that runs parallel to the Jazz season will be interesting; however, I think there will be a lot of excitement for it. Like with Vegas, being good quickly will go a long way.

Why? I've been told that everyone is "fleeing" California for years. If they haven't been going to Utah yet, why would they start now?

Certainly not because of the f***ing Coyotes.
Tech industry is moving to Utah. It has the fastest growth in that sector of any other city earning the nickname the "Silicon slopes." California lost a congressional seat in the last census.

The point being that the city is growing which would mean there's a larger market to support the team than you would think.

I mean I've worked in tech for 25 years and I don't know anyone that's moved to Utah but if you say so.

Even if the city grows by 500,000 that's still pretty damn small to support a pro sports franchise.

The Utah Liquor Laws
Many years ago, I was a roadie for a west coast punk summer tour with my buddies bands. Show in St. George Saturday night and the next day we were heading out to Colorado. Stopped in a grocery store that next day before leaving and I hit the liquor jackpot -- a cart was full of hard alcohol that crazy super discounted. I couldn't believe my luck. Took about half of it and went to line to buy. Only to get the disappointment of a lifetime when they told me there is no liquor sales allowed on Sunday. I'll never forgive Utah for that moment.

Hard to believe puritanical liquor laws are still in practice in 2024 but here I am In Connecticut. At least you can still go to a dedicated hootch hut on Sundays (though they close early) but the fact you can only buy beer & wine at grocery stores and not on Sunday is so f***ing absurd in modern society it makes me want to punch a preacher. New team name:

The Utah Preacher Punchers

They can name the team after the state, but the city population matters in terms of attendance. Around 140k people live in SLC. That’s a joke. Even Irvine has like 290k.

This exit from Phoenix is a loss for Bettman. The league is getting extorted by the team owner and also moving a franchise to a C grade market.

Owners around the league have to question why they aren’t getting more to approve a sale than what is being reported as less than $10M a team. Seems like this whole situation has been misplayed. And SLC needs a real rink, so that’s no slam dunk either.

those first row seats must be f***in incredible, sucks for everyone else behind them i guess

clearly not intended for hockey unfortunately
