Both fanbases needlessly tore down the other player because they thought it propped up their guy, instead of appreciating two of the greatest defenseman of all-time and how great they were in the 2010's.
I don't think to much changes if the players had been drafted by the other team. Maybe the Kings don't win in 2014 because the margin was razor thin and that was absolute peak Doughty, he was in his stone prime and just elevated his game to an insane level, the best of his career. Karlsson was similar in 2017 (just didn't have the support) but no guarantee he does it in 2014 and the Kings needed every bit of Drew putting on the cape. 2012 it wouldn't have mattered, the Kings were just a wagon with Quick playing like prime-Hasek.
When you go down the team success path to dunk on a player I just think of Marcel Dionne and (different sport but same idea) Mike Trout. It's more an indication of the team than the player, it's the NHL not the NBA or NFL (for QB's) where 1 guy has such a huge impact. Had Drew been drafted by Ottawa it's extremely unlikely he has any rings either, same thing for Kopitar had Columbus taken him over Brule.
I still wonder if the Kings gave any thought to drafting Karlsson in 2008, they went RHD with their first 3 picks and Voynov was clearly an offensive d-man, so they felt they needed that in the pipeline. Was there any thought to taking the offensive guy at 13 and then looking for the toughness where they took Voynov? Could you imagine, that would have been one of the alltime great drafts by a team.
