It was more raping of an extremely overmatched GM:
Peterson, Walker, Granz (2nd rounder) and 2024 2nd.. for flotsom and jetsom (provorov, canaughton and Hodgson) and 2m retention on Provorov for 2 seasons.
Basically all that to save 3m for 2 seasons on Caltastrophe. I dont know how this isnt talked about more as another one of Rob's disasters.

So gettting out of Peterso's contract, cost us a RHD because we didn't have enough, (Grans) then a D that NO ONE WANTED TO STAY....because der Spence/Clarke.....and a 2nd rounder....all of that allowed us to resign Gavrikov....

And you wonder why no one is really saying that is a disaster.....really?

Arvidsson-Kopitar-Kempe
Moore-Danault-Kaliyev
Fiala-Byfield-Dubois
Grundstrom-Turcotte-Lewis
(JAD, Laferriere, Fagemo to Ontario)

Anderson-Doughty
Gavrikov-Spence
Roy-Clarke
Englund

PP
Kopitar-Kempe-Fiala-Byfield-Doughty (Doughty at left circle, Kempe at right circle, Kopi at point)
Arvidsson-Dubois-Moore-Kaliyev-Clarke (Arvidsson left circle, Kaliyev right circle, Clarke point)

PK
Lewis-Turcotte
Moore-Danault
Kopitar-Kempe
Gavrikov-Roy
Doughty-Anderson

3-on-3 OT
Byfield-Kempe-Doughty
Danault-Moore-Roy
Kopitar-Arvidsson-Clarke

Win.

You need Fiala or Doughty at the point, not Kopitar

It seems a lot to give up, to move a bad contract... maybe without the provorov retention, I would say its almost fair. It seems to me that stashing Cal in the A getting 1.2 relief was a better option. Then retain the 2nd, Grans and do something w Walker (Im sure you could've gotten a 3rd for him). Even if you waive him and he's claimed I still think thats a better outcome than the deal that went down.

TSN guys mentioned that the Rangers owner would prefer to not trade their 2024 1st since he wants the team to make a pick at The Sphere which he had a hand in building.

I wish I could find the article, but I recall that Mike Keenan had a deal vetoed by St. Louis ownership for similar reasons. Keenan wanted to ship out their 1996 1st rounder to Washington for a young Jason Allison. St. Louis was already designated as the 1996 draft hosts and their ownership wanted to keep its pick.

Allison would later have his breakout years in Boston under Keenan. St. Louis ended up with Marty Reasoner.

I have a theory about that. Look at Shestyorkin's drop off this season... I wonder if JQ is such an alpha amongst goalies the other ones become cucks.
I think its more likely a case of a team with longstanding players not being on board with the managements decision to make the switch, and the old guy digging in his heels. No matter how well Peterson played, and he did play well, he would sit. He got his extension, was likely told he was going to be the man, and just lost his confidence in a competition that some did not want him to win.

Pure conjecture of course.

I suppose ironic wasnt the right word...

coincidentally?

Just found it mildly amusing that there was a conversation about righty-righty pairings and nobody mentioned Walker as being proof that it could work with a sample size longer than 5 minutes and then here he is getting mentioned as being worth a 1st rounder at the deadline.

Additional context... some people still refer back to him bitterly as if he was a plug and a waste.

They were wrong then and they're wrong now.
Walker was a terrific third pairing defenseman who got hurt at a bad time for job security. With so many highly touted kids ready to break in he was going to be the odd man out.

The guy is such a f***ing failure on all fronts it's impossible to keep track of it all.

If teams are saying a first for walker than Roy should definitely be traded. You cannot let him walk for nothing.

Roll the dice with Spence and Clarke.
It makes the most sense, especially for a team that is looking to get over the top. Like it or not, we are not going to make any noise in the playoffs this year barring some kind of miracle. I'd rather set this team up for success in future years. You know that Edmonton is hungry to win their first - they are probably going to win multiple with McDavid. Colorado/Vegas/Winnipeg/Dallas are all stronger than us.

I’m happy for Quick, but am I the only one who feels miffed he couldn’t pull half that out of his ass last year?

Wouldn’t it have been nice to ride another amazing Quick performance to another glorious playoff defeat?

Benoit allaire convinced quick to play deeper in his net and less like a wild man out there. It allowed him to explode post to post much faster than when he was younger and able to cover the greater distanc when he used to play way out and super agressive.
He never ceases to amaze me. Team docs say quick is a freakish combination of flexibility and strengyh

I think he could have if this team bothered to block shots and minimize scoring chances.

I’m super bummed out he’s not having that success and resurgence here to be honest. Good for him though, happy for you, Quick!

Zero chance because Quick wasn't going to make the adjustments to his game that Chris kontos outlined perfectly above.

We saw that when he still got shelled in a couple starts in Vegas last year. It was the same Quick we saw in LA. He needed to go to New York and have his career hanging by a thread to make the changes for this resurgence.

I'm not a huge Tortorella fan, but I generally think he's got his heart in the right place. He had this to say:

"I get mail. It's mind-boggling," Tortorella said. "We talked about it last year, I'll say it again. Stop sending me letters about tanking because it's not going to happen. And I know people want that high draft pick, you know, next year in the draft. And, 'You're not winning the Stanley Cup, so just lose the games.' It's not going to happen. It's so wrong and it's the worst way you can develop your young players.

Good lesson for those of you who keep insisting that the right way to build is to lose lose lose four, five years in a row to gain assets.

You dont have to lose. Kings made the playoffs without Arvidsson and Doughty on the backs of Bjornfot, Durzi, Lizotte, etc… Kids were learning at the same time.
