Another star player that signs for 8 years... weird... He must be unaware the cap going up and the team doesn't seem to care about him potentially getting injured or whatever in those 8 years.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Sebastian Aho To Eight-Year Extension

July 26, 2023

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced an eight-year, $9.75MM AAV contract extension for star center Sebastian Aho.

This is a massively consequential contract extension for the Hurricanes, who secure Aho through the 2031-32 season at a 15% raise from his previous cap hit of $8.46MM. The $78MM total value of the deal makes it the largest contract in Hurricanes franchise history.

Hurricanes GM Don Waddell issued the following statement regarding the extension:
Sebastian has developed into one of the best two-way centers in hockey. He’s a tremendous leader on and off the ice who sets a great example for our younger players. We’re grateful that he’s decided to stay in Carolina for the foreseeable future.

They could had traded up and drafted him before Bruins pick.

They could have traded up and taken someone else. We can cherry pick all day long. Sebastian Aho is in the news today he was taken with the pick directly after Traves Dermott.

When you get into the 2nd round, it becomes as much about player development as anything else. If we knew he would win 6 Selke in 2003 he's not available there anyways so who cares.

It was really a hypothetical comment. No need to read so much into it

It's just general team discussion stuff... not trade, but there doesn't seem to be a good place to post this otherwise... so here it is.

So on the PP, JT is really good at scoring, Marner is really good at passing, Matthews needs to be alot better, and McDavid is the best at everything. Seems pretty accurate tbh.

So the Coyotes aren’t spending very much on their D. The highest cap hit they can currently ice for 6 D is around $6.8M

On paper, it's also probably the worst NHL D we've seen.... in how long? It's yikes material.

Don't forget, they've got Shea Weber too... and his $7.87 mil cap hit.... I mean... they have more in cap hit on a guy who will never play again, than their active D.

And Sean Durzi is their highest paid roster D.

He makes up 25% of their cap.

Senators Sign Vladimir Tarasenko

July 27, 2023 at 6:01 pm CDT

The Senators have brought in some help up front, announcing the signing of winger Vladimir Tarasenko. The veteran receives a one-year, $5MM contract. Tarasenko also receives a full no-trade clause.

The 31-year-old was the top free agent forward left on the open market despite coming off what would be considered a down year by his standards. Tarasenko started the season with St. Louis, picking up 10 goals and 19 assists in 38 games before the Blues moved him to the Rangers a little before the trade deadline. He wasn’t able to maintain that level of production, however, notching eight goals with 13 helpers in 31 regular season contests while adding three goals and an assist in their first-round loss to New Jersey.

Interestingly reading the Sens board a poster there, who seems to have been correct many times with inside tidbits, suggests Ottawa will get cap compliant perhaps by starting with a players or players on LTIR (Norris is one possibility). He also says Tarasenko signing may be insurance re: Hockey Canada investigation, plot thickens.

That's a fair signing for the Sens. I still expect they'll be a bottom 10 team in the NHL though.
Last year the Sens only finished 6 points behind the Florida Panthers and the last WC spot in the East, generally get off to a slow start and then can't catch up.

Sens are a young team with some good young talent on the rise and I think you're underestimating them, IMO

All these teams in the Atlantic have been rebuilding Buffalo, Detroit and Ottawa and making lots of high picks and its only a matter of time before they start closing the gap on the playoff regulars.

If Giroux has another year like last year and Norris stays healthy the Sens might be a top 3 team. I always forget that they have Chychrun.
