Does the NHL have a problem? Players seems to be demanding trades or not wanting to play in Canada. If this continues, Canadian teams are screwed. Not sure Bettman cares
Canadian teams have been at a big disadvantage for years now and it'll only get worse as time goes on.

Taxes, weather, travel etc. Most of those are the worst in Canadian cities.

Taxes, travel, and weather are all pretty comparable for the Eastern Canadian teams and the teams in the Northeast of the US - which is quite a few teams. There are certain teams at an advantage (Tampa, Florida, and Dallas come to mind immediately), but a lot of the teams are in a similar boat.

Winnipeg is always going to be a tough draw and to a lesser extent Edmonton and Calgary (lower Taxes but weather still very cold and heavy travel).

On the flip side a disproportionate number of NHLers are Canadian so in theory at least that should be a draw.

The number of NHL cities in the US that are better to live in than Canada are dwindling, rapidly. It doesn’t look like it’s going better anytime soon.

Wow, Ottawa got hosed in that deal. Was that really the best they could do?

Debrincat had to agree to an extension and he went home to Detroit. Detroit dealing from a positioni of strength, Debrincate a position of strength, Ottawa on the losing end.

Mind you maybe part of the deal for Ottawa is getting character back?

Sebrango played for Canada WJC team, although also played ECHL.

It's hard not to consider the price Ottawa, though. I remember that deal being called a huge win for Cat. 7th+39th becoming Sebrango, a late 1st and Kubalik is just really bad from an asset POV.

Travel is always worse when you need to cross the boarder, which you need to do a lot more times as a Canadian team than you do an American one. Its a much bigger sticking point in the NBA and MLB as there is only one team that has to deal with that.

Yeah, the first deal was the bad part, this latest deal shows the lack of leverage the Sens had.

I guess, but is customs really an issue at all? These are multi millionaires on team charters. I'd imagine any/all required forms are filled out by some team lawyer and sent ahead of the plane and they get their own separate customs check that’s more or less just a wave through.

I can't remember who, but I do remember a former raptor a couple years ago commenting to the media about how much he hated the border travel.

While it's obviously a lesser inconvenience for them than the average Joe traveller, it's an issue of even taking on an extra minor inconvenience when you don't have to

Bettman is a factor as well. The whole point to his reign is about growing the game in the States. He might as well have taken a lap with the Cup when Vegas won. Unfortunately this comes at the expense of our Canadian franchises.
Not allowing Canadian teams to hire competent management teams is Bettman’s greatest accomplishment as Commish.

I mean, New York State hasn't produced a Stanley Cup Champion since 1994 and they have 3x teams.

The NBA being 90% Americans probably isn't much of a problem just need to get a passport because I bet a lot of the rookies have never even left the US in their life.

The problem with MLB is the amount of players from countries that don't have the Canada-USA style exception. You need an actual Visa.

Weather? At the rate we're going, the South US is going to be on fire pretty soon...
