I notice Weber makes $7.857 million in cap and Suzuki is at $7.875 million, so that's probably a none too subtle admission Weber is finished.

Tavares was a UFA, and was easily better last year.
Statistically they weren't far off

Tavares - 56GP: 19G, 31A, 50pts, 12PPP, 18:12TOI/GP
Suzuki - 56GP: 15G, 26A, 41pts, 13PPP, 18:11TOI/GP

Similarly non-physical
Tavares has a clear edge on the draw
Suzuki is a regular PKer while Tavares is not
Offensive supporting cast was definitely lacking for Suzuki:
  • Habs top 4 forward scorers 44pts (Toffoli), 41pts (Suzuki), Tatar (30pts), 24pts (Anderson)
  • Leafs top 4 forward scorers 67pts (Marner), 66pts (Matthews), 50pts (Tavares), 42pts (Nylander)
I don't think the gap between the two is that big, and one is 31 and on the decline while the other is 22 and on the rise.

At this pace(given all the overpaid contracts this offseason) even the Marner contract will look like a bargain in no time.

In time every contract will look good. But let's not kid ourselves, these new contracts are over the top because of Nylander and Marner contracts

Nylander contract really started all for next gen players. It was a bad contract at the time

In a comparison of Suzuki's best year to a relatively down year production-wise for Tavares, Tavares outscored him (28 vs. 22 goal pace) and outproduced him (73 vs. 60 point pace). He also generated offense better, was better defensively, and was better on faceoffs. Not sure Suzuki getting the 7th most forward PK time per game on his team makes up the difference.

I agree that Suzuki is 22 and on the rise, but that just means that UFA contracts aren't relevant to what he received.

Our contracts changed nothing, and the contract was perfectly fine at the time.

You never know. Maybe he does the reverse Brent Burns and becomes a super star forward.
Well, its not unprecedented. Wendel came out of junior as D. But he was immediately put on the wing. Never played a pro game on D (I believe). Red Kelly did it too but much later in his career. Makes me ponder as to why more teams don't target guys who are obviously overmatched on the defensive end (cough...Gardiner...cough) and push them up on the wing. Especially if they are injury prone and kinda soft (cough...Jake...cough).

Suzuki is a good player but that's really not a good contract given his production and comparisons.

Even Nylander on his first full UFA contract in a couple years from now won't be making too much more than that.

It reeks of team scared from that offseason offersheet

right now the contract looks bad but I think they're hoping by year 2 or 3 that he's worth that and I think he will be. Montreal could possibly have Drouin-Suzuki-Caufield as a top scoring line so I could see Suzuki being a 60-70 point player this season. If he doesn't live up to that contract it's good for us I guess though.

By year 4 or 5 that 8 mill deal will be a 6 mill equivalent today. He just needs to top out as a solid two-way 2C to be worth that contract. Think it’s pretty good for the Habs unfortunately. Not a steal, likely an overpayment in the near future, but it’ll be looked back on as a fair deal by the end of it.

This sums it up .. the risk is him playing up tot hat potential for the longevity of the contract.

Typically a long term RFA deal doesn't have that kind of risk.

Suzuki's comments upon signing the deal sums it up .. Doesn't sound like there was any negotiation at all, they just threw a bunch of money at him to stay to ensure he doesn't get offer sheeted ...

It's like Bergevin said "What will it take to sign you now?" and gave it to him.

Hard to say it's a 'good' deal in this circumstance

Whoa didn't realize the season started tonight

Been out of the loop for a while thought leafs-habs played season opener for the NHL this year

Pens up 3-0 with no Crosby or Malkin
