I've never seen a player become so overrated as quickly as Barkov

So many Panther fans, Finnish fans and fans of teams with defensive non superstar centers fans are making crazy statements about the player

There are people saying he's 2nd on to McDavid in the league and better than kuch, Crosby, Kane

The dude is huge choker who led the Panthers to 3 straight failures. He didn't get the criticism he deserved for the 2017 to 2019 Panthers going from 1st in the Atlantic to 3 straight playoff misses

I can't justify how anyone could even consider him being a better player than the below

McDavid, Kuch, Mack, Drai, Matthews, Panarin, Crosby, Marchand, Hedman, Vas, and Pasta

He's in the 12-25 tier with guys like

Kane, Point, Makar, Malkin, Marner, Aho, Rantanen, Bergeron, Huberdeau, OV, Fox, RoR, Stone, Barzal

People are talking about a player closer to the 20th best player in the world, being better than elite proven scorers. Barkov is a ppg or so center with great defense. He's not a 110 point elite defensive center like some of his fans make him out to be

Barkov had that monster 96 point year in 2019, so it's not unrealistic to suggest that he could get to 100 points or slightly more in a perfect career peak kind of season. Combine that with Selke level defense and that's a very compelling star number one center. In terms of being a big game player, he feels like one of those Thornton type guys who underachieves in the big moments than a guy who has gutted out the victories, but that's not not our problem. Generally, how you want to rank him up to you, but I wouldn't be wasting too much energy trying to diminish him either.

He's on the "Jonathan Toews" pedestal of defense and intangibles without the Stanley Cup wins.

But his production isn't far off from Matthews, Marner, and Tavares in the last 4 years .. So the offensive numbers support the AAV. Fair deal but his value will be held up by his defensive reputation (which may or may not be accurate). Playoff success drives the bus on these deals.

If Barkov gets $10, Huberdeau will ask for at least $9 as his production isn't far off.

What I'm most happy with is as time goes on and the stars get paid, all those teams with seemingly endless cap space and unlimited potential end up with the same headache as the Leafs. Looking at Colorado and Florida.

Reactions: Marner to Matthews
That's the thing with him - he's capable of both the great and the gaffe. Every goalie is I suppose, but the ones who are capable of holding a starting spot down are able to significantly limit the gaffes. Freddie hasn't been able to prevent those over the last few years, and IIRC that was also his knock in Anaheim.

Sabres to use Dahlin as a forward?

Jeff Marek on the Sabres: "It seems like they're running a couple of different experiments on the ice: Tage Thompson is now a centre, there's been some speculation that Dahlin might take some shifts up front not unlike what Housley did with his Sabres career once upon time".

… wow they really want to ruin this kid eh

Suzuki has the potential but he’s going to have to live up to it to justify that contract

For sure. He can live up to this contract, and it’s Montreal hedging their bets in case Suzuki breaks out this season. Short-term it’s an overpayment, but could end being a very good value contract if he does break out.

Their top two C’s in Dvorak and Suzuki are now locked up for years, so they don’t have to worry about being poached either.

Typically paying for potential is a riverboat gambler move. The best example of it panning out is Draisaitl.

I don’t know if Suzuki has that elite ceiling though, so you’re hoping he becomes an average #1C to at least justify the contract.

The Habs cap situation is not good moving forward.

Generational forward.

At 8 million I don't think you need or expect him to be an elite #1C though. We're paying Tavares 11M and I think you could make a pretty good argument they were pretty close last year as far as impact goes with Suzuki likely narrowing or eliminating that gap this year or within the next couple at least.

As far as the Habs cap goes, I see the potential issues there but on the other hand there's so much up in the air for them it's hard to really know what their cap situation will be. Weber is done so that's 7.9M gone, who knows maybe Price will LTIRetire and that's 10.5M more in freed up space. They also have a couple of moderately big ticket players coming off the books in 2 years who could be dumped sooner if need be (Drouin and Byron) without any real impact on the team.
