Is it just me, or does this seem like a LOT.

For what he's proven, it's quite a bit... but he's a first overall pick, and if they don't totally screw up his development, he should become an elite D man... he's got everything you'd want in a D man. By year three, this could become a massive steal. Buffalo doesn't need the cap space, and they aren't going to compete anytime soon... it really doesn't matter if it's an overpay the first few years... they've got a potential star player, who is signed, and seemingly happy... for now.

He's very capable D who has all the tools. Seriously lacks confidence though. He can easily live up to that contract..

Buffalo needs to win back their star players confidence. Easy way to be liked is to pay them

Dude takes a break from hockey, due to Covid to protect his daughter (who has lung issues)... and full respect for putting your family first,

But then doesn't get vaccinated?

Detroit was going to be trash this season anyways, but there goes a top six forward for like 15-20% of the games they'll play this season.

Sucks about Stalock though.

Apparently they only play 9 games in Canada, I wonder if there will be restrictions between states though?

Doesn't he need surgery still?

Yes. He was to rehab this offseason, and then explore surgery. The short version of this; is the team wants him to get neck disk fusion surgery, he wants disk replacement surgery. Seemingly, the rehab didn't work (wasn't expected to). He wants out, and likely will be LTIR all season anyway. No shock that they took the C from him, he likely won't play there again. I doubt that they'd even name a C at this point.

Should be no surprise he failed his physical then.

Eichel’s trade value is taking a major hit on this

He has no trade value, more because of the injury, than the captaincy. He needs the surgery (whichever one he gets), rehab, and then show he can still play at an elite level.

Evidently disk replacement surgey has never been performed on an active NHL player and recently it was determined that the team gets the final say on the surgeries undertaken on its players or something like that.
