To be fair, he did sign there likely as a depth forward who plays half the games, while he was 1st line winger here beside two of the best talents in the game. LOL

We didn't know he was going to be playing first line and PP usage when he first signed, yet people were still negative on the deal...

I actually don't like the Thornton deal for 2 separate reasons. One, his bandwagoning on Florida kind of shows you the Leafs 'destination' reputation has probably taken a real hit this season. Two, I think Thornton's going to be a net negative for the Panthers every time he's out there. Which isn't a negative per se as a division rival. But Thornton's so bad out there.

Yeah I've wondered about that - could all be cap or better offer-related but Simmonds has been the only guy to return (other than Spezza) - out of Riitich, Hutton, Foligno, Nash, Thornton, Galchenyuk.....

Or maybe they weren't wanted back? Also most of those guys barely played for the Leafs.

Thornton - Maybe the worst "everyday" player (he was never I healthy scratch) I have ever seen in a Leafs jersey, they couldn't have possibly wanted him back could they?
Rittich - short term insurance and barely played, they wanted someone better to platoon with Campbell
Nash - played two games as a Leaf, I'm a little surprised they didn't try to keep him but he's old/injured and we found a younger and healthier version in Kampf
Foligno - was hurt then played like a mediocre 4th liner when he was in the lineup, I'm sure they had some interest in bringing him back but no way to compete with the Bruins offering 2x what he's worth.
Galchenyuk - Still unsigned, 2 teams walked away from him in the last season, it was a nice little story but he was useful because he was hungry - while still being terrible defensively. Hard to see that continuing long term. Likely europe bound unless he can earn a shot somewhere off a PTO
Hutton - Not sure what's going on there - the guy left the team for personal reasons at the end of the year/playoffs and is still unsigned. He was good in Anaheim and looked decent here in the little action he got. I wouldn't mid bringing him back but like I said, seems like there's some non-hockey related stuff going on with him.

Yeah the only one that suprises me is Hutton as it was mentioned they pursued him before. Thornton though - there must have been an agreement to play him every game and give him pp time etc
Galchenyuk - meh, he showed flashes

The Foligno saga is kind of funny cause we essentially ended up swapping Nick Foligno to Boston for Ritchie and Kase. I wonder if that signing/swap had that in mind to some extent?

Toronto and Boston were both thinking of this when they made or didnt make the Foligno signing.

Which team will come out on top? Time will tell.

My bet is on Toronto. Kase and Ritchie have a higher upside than Foligno. But who knows.

The Coyotes get one more year in their current arena before being kicked out, since they can't pay their debt. What a terrible organization

The day the Coyotes move will be a good day. Don’t even care if it’s not to Quebec, that franchise should’ve been put to pasture ages ago, but Bettman that stubborn worm just kept pumping life support into them. God knows he fought harder for the Yotes than the Nordiques and Jets 1.0 combined.

Maybe the cap will actually go up once they move the team bc the rest of the league no need to finance them

As long as Buttman is in charge, fat chance we are getting another team in Canada

When the Canadian Dollar Stabilizes

Even while some dream of European expansion, the most logical city for NHL expansion is, of course, Quebec City. The city was the former home of the Nordiques team and has a brand-new, state-of-the-art, NHL-ready stadium in Videotron Centre. With a fanbase ready for the return of hockey, what’s holding the NHL back? That would be the economics of the Canadian dollar.

Lost on the normal fan is the immense financial complexities of having a league that’s half in Canada and half in the United States. Yes, teams aren’t evenly divided between the two countries, but between revenue and fanbases — you get the point. With the Canadian dollar weaker than the United States dollar, it’s not the optimal business situation for the NHL to expand north of the border. Remember, it was similar situations that led to the relocation of the original Winnipeg Jets franchise and the Quebec Nordiques. That’s also what derailed Quebec’s most recent expansion bid.

With the construction of Videotron Centre and its long history, Quebec City already has a leg up on any other potential Canadian market. With the expansion of the Ottawa Senators in 1992 and the relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers in 2011, Canadian expansion isn’t completely off the NHL’s radar. It’s not a question of if, only a question of when.
