I'd have to agree since we're talking about evaluating at the time of the trade. Kessel obviously brought much more value to the team than Barrie did or Kerfoot will. Kadri also was only 3C on the team. However, a non-playoff team trading away their next two firsts (unprotected) didn't exactly seem to have good idea written all over it.

That definitely didn't help. I just didn't like the risk because they didn't seem good enough to begin with. The traded away assets were also going to be even younger than Kessel. A team that makes such a trade either isn't rebuilding or shouldn't be.

I think he fared really well here. My gripe was with the quality of team he was being added to. In turn, that ended up affecting the placement of the draft picks traded away.

The Kadri trade was not instantly bad; it was a significant Leafs win in value at the time, ad it's arguably still a decent trade with hindsight. Many others were both instantly bad and bad with time.

at time the Rask deal was in the leafs favor but turned out to bad because Rask becomes a HOF goalie

It was more of a flop because Raycroft wasn't mentally strong enough to play in this league. Rask was always going to be a good goalie, but the idea was to pay a higher ceiling for an immediate need.

Stempniak was pretty terrible the second it happened. We got the second worst forward in the deal and the player with the lowest ceiling

I'd argue Phil played better than most ever expected him to, the big problem was how bad that team played in the first year Komisarek was terrible, Beauchemim never quite settled and our goaltending was brutal.

It was a year where basically everything went wrong. Didn't help that they had something like 1 win with Kessel recovering from his injury for the first ~10 games
