Weber's a much better player, a much for impactful one and defensemen have success longer than forwards. He's also signed for a couple more years, Staal isn't. If Weber got moved ,something lot better than Staal would be coming back.

Never did I say it would be one for one. I just can't see what else they would try to pull off that would address both teams' needs. If anything, you've helped highlight my point that it's not going to be easy to broker a deal for either guy.

Source out of Toronto tells me Mike Babcock's #1 Assistant Coach choice is Jacques Lemaire. And, that Lemaire has been contacted. #TSN690

Not a shock, given his ties to Lou. If true a great pickup, Lemaire is a very good defensive coach and would be a good fit with the Leafs working with Babs.

This has all the makings of Atoms For Peace. High profile players, lots of hype, total garbage product. Can't wait.

Yup. Toronto is going to be a ****-sideshow next season (again). Can't wait for the endless entertainment coming out of that city. Awesome.

All-star coaching/front office staff, ECHL on ice talent.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Jacques Lemaire as a special assignment coach.

Lemaire has been with the New Jersey Devils for the past six seasons as a head coach (2009-10, 2010-11) and most recently as a special assignment coach. He has been reunited with GM Lou Lou Lamoriello in Toronto. "Obviously Jacques Lemaire has a wealth of experience. We had a great relationship from the 2010 Olympics and I've asked him to join our staff to help me and the rest of our coaches within the entire organization be the best they can be," said Leafs head coach Mike Babcock.

The Leafs have way too many cooks in the kitchen, and guys that are used to being in charge and doing things their way. I don't think it's going to work as well as they think it will.

The #Pens have signed defenseman Sergei Gonchar to a professional tryout contract. Details: http://pens.pe/1TBie9m

He's turning 42 next year...but a tryout is just that...doens't mean they'll sign him.

Hagelin signed, 4yrs/ 4M per

Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC 50m50 minutes ago

With ANA RT @icemancometh: Hagelin's four-year contract is worth $16 million ($4 million AAV) through 2018-19.

I'm surprised the Jets haven't signed the Captain yet...thought Ladd would be done by now. Thought maybe 6yrs/6 per.

With Housley getting in, I think Gonchar's got an outside shot at getting into the HHOF someday. I'd have both guys out if it was up to me, but he's got a comprable Norris record, has actually won a cup and been part of some decent teams, and he's also probably the best Russian defenseman as far as NHL career is concerned (Zubov?). Housley being American probably helped him, maybe nationality will help Gonchar too. He's also got two NHL 2nd Team Allstars to Housley's one.

800+ points as a defenseman who peaked in the DPE is nothing to sneeze at.

Pavel Bure forms new Veterans League for International Play for retired players , with playoffs and a champion.

http://www.eurohockey.com/article/4073-new-veterans-league-for-national-teams.html

Pavel Bure has organized the World LEgends Hockey League (WLHL) , which debuts in November featuring Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Czech Republic and Germany. Players have to be at least 45 yrs old and have played in IIHF sanctioned games for their country.

Although the US and Canada are not in the league this year, that might change next year, they will have participants in the All Star game in Oct, (Russian stars vs world team)

Each team has to have 27 players, 2 goalies. Tourney begins in Nov with sets , playoffs and a final in Jan.

Great idea...and they all love playing for their country. Would be cool to see those stars again playing for their country.

A couple minor things in the NHL news arena.

Adam Portzline of the Columbus dispatch reported that the Jackets are one of 3 teams that Ehrhoff is considering. He wants to remain in the NHL and is believed to be weighing his offers. I think he'd be a good fit for the Jackets.

Also rumors that surfaced in late July with Scuderi being shopped resurfaced now that Gonchar was signed and would be a much cheaper replacement. Scuds diminished play over the last 2 yrs and the Pens creating cap space are the motivators. Scuds has 2 more years at 3.35 per. The Avs were the team mentioned by a variety of sources in late July and still appear t be frontrunner with the Coyotes sniffing around as well. But the feeling is the Avs are going to give up a minor leaguer and /or a draft pick with a prospect going the other way with Scuds. Holdup has been the prospect the Pens would be willing to give up. It's a better alternative them a buyout over the next 4 yrs. Either way, his days in Pitts appear to be done.

That's what you took from that? The guy could have drawn a **** and balls there, considering what he's accomplished.

Nah, it's not the only thing but c'mon, you write a great letter like that, you sign it.
