My next door neighbor's kid brother lives in Raleigh was up here last weekend visiting for a family party and we got to talking about hockey. I asked him about the Canes and if he felt Eric Staal would be moved, last yr of current contact, given he's about to turn 31 and although a good offensive forward (.87 PPG career) that team is in a rebuild and is minimal , I 'd guess, 4 years or more away from being a contender, esp given the teams in the conf ahead of them. He disagreed ,saying he didn't think Staal should be moved, that he's been here his whole career and would retire a Cane.
Of the 5 others, when the topic broadened to at what point , given that situation, do you have to consider moving a guy his age in that circumstance. I think the Flyers will be faced with that soon with Giroux, as they are not a playoff team this year and also a good 4 yrs or more out of being a true contender/elite. He'll be 32 or more by then.
Four of the group felt before age 30, then the trade value tends to dip. The other 2 felt that age didn't matter until 34 or 35, which IMO is too late.
SO if you're the GM, and you're looking at that Canes roster and realistically where their future path is, do you trade him now, while he still has value , esp in a league where top centers are in demand.
Or do you wait ? His cap hit is 8.2 and in the last year.
If I'm the Canes, I call Poile, the Preds have goaltending and a stud defense. But having your top 2 centers 35 yrs old doesn't bode well for a team banking on playing north of 100 games in a SC run. I think given how close they are, he'd be a good fit for them for the next 3 years and provide a better first line option than they have now.
