2016 prospect Matthews signs with ZSC Lions

Auston Matthews has signed a one-year deal with the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League A.

The soon to be 18-year-old forward is projected to be the top pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. "He is something special," GM Edgar Salis said. "He has good speed, good skill — the whole package. We have good players, and with his hockey IQ I think he can feed our guys and fit the team. He brings everything. That was why we jumped on him." Matthews had been linked to the team for months, but work permit red tape was holding up the signing. He has been permitted to start living in Switzerland and playing on Sept. 18, which is the day after he turns 18 years old. Matthews chose to go to Europe instead of playing in the WHL or NCAA.

The advantage the Ducks have over almost every other contender is the ability to add anyone who may be available at the deadline without any cap restrictions.

That's a steal for Silfverberg starting this year imo. Guy will easily be worth 5-6 million by the end of that deal. Too bad it's balanced out by Kesler ;)

Definitely an interesting decision. Can't blame him for wanting to make six figures while playing against tougher/older competition. It'll be interesting to see if anybody else follows suit in future years.

Flames fan sends Canucks GM flowers for his offseason

Somebody on the main board had a gem of a comment: "Benning sent the fan back a larger bouquet and a 3rd round pick."

So would he be AHL eligible after he is drafted?

they will not be a cap team as they have an internal budget...that said they have put together a hell of team with a budget.

They certainly have. It's next year that the cap crap is going to hit the fan and force some tough decisions. Vatanen, Despres, Lindholm, Sekac, Rakell, Wagner, Anderson, and Gibson, all RFA. Several of those guys are going to get substantial raises.

If I'm the Ducks, I throw everything at it this year. They will have about 30 million to sign those 8 guys and fill a couple more roster spots. That's not including whatever Hagelin gets. And that's if they spend to the cap, which they traditionally do not. It is more likely that after they sign Hagelin they will have about 23-24M to sign everyone.

Plus Getzlaf, Perry, and Kesler will all be 31. Go all in now, because there likely isn't much time for a retool if they run into RFA issues. I expect them to actually make a big deal at the deadline this year rather than their typical ho-hum stuff.

maybe that's part of the reason why they picked up khdobbin is so that they can move out gibson or Anderson after this year.
edit: Nevermind he is a UFA as well

Yup, he'd have the option since he wasn't drafted out of the CHL. Of the limited viewings, I liked Eichel better than him but Matthews did top Eichel's scoring totals for the USNTDP at the same age.

Definitely an interesting draft year in terms of uncommon leagues. Matthews will be coming out of the Swiss league, meanwhile there's a BCHL team that has a couple of potential top 10-15 picks in Dante Fabbro and Tyson Jost.

Coincidentally, Everett of the WHL had the rights to Matthews and Jost. Some had hypothesized that if Matthews had gone to Everett, Jost might have followed suit. And if Jost bailed, Fabbro would have left to play for Seattle.

Nothing would make the Ducks scarier than picking up a top goalie. They certainly won't be able to afford their promising youngsters and that top goalie long term. I would guess they sign one of Anderson/Gibson and let the other walk. Thing is, Gibson is waaay to young to make that kind of call on yet.

They don't have anyone in their system with the quality of a Getzlaf or Perry, no one really elite material. By the time their young guys come into their own, those two are going to be 33+.

It's really difficult nowadays to sustain winning with gaps like that. You really need most of your core at 30 and under at the same time. The Kings have really jammed most of the key guys in that 27-30 gap. Quick is just outside at 31, but goalies tend to have longer lifespans.

It's conducive to winning, but this team is for sure going to be a complete mess in about 5 years. Let's win more cups so we can just giggle about it when finishing last in the division.

Wouldn't be shocked if this Matthews thing was the start of top players players (like Top 10 guys in a given draft) finding a way around CHL/NHL restrictions and being able to go to the AHL instead. I've often wondered, how much does an 18 or 19 year old really improve from dominating in a league where most of the players are younger, and those who are older are so much less gifted that being more physically mature makes no difference? Referring to players returning to the CHL who simply aren't ready for the NHL quite yet.

I was thinking about this as well. Nobody in their system really jumps out and says wow, there's Getzlafs or Perry's replacement in a few years. They still lack a true #1 defenseman, and I don't think anyone will trade them one anytime soon.

]This is a really good article about the Patrick Kane situation but not the standard fare that the same media outlets have been copying. This is about the cultural discoloration that occurs when some fans only see the 'star' who they have formed a one sided bond with, see only the glitter and can't recognize the person. it's something that has become a disturbing trend every time something like this happens.

And you’re at a crossroads for which you must make a choice that defines you and your morals. A human highlight reel who just hoisted the Stanley Cup and had sports fans here at the highest of highs may have done something really terrible. He is a sports star who has embarrassed and compromised his employer—again. Only this time an alleged victim now finds herself against the almost-never sympathetic sporting world and vicious misogynistic Internet that has already begun its detestable attack on her as-of-now-anonymous self in defense of their sports hero almost-friend and their own selfishness and ignorance.
Our selfish fan culture causes us to reflexively think “Whoa, I hope Kaner comes out okay from whatever this is (and doesn’t miss any playing time for the Hawks).”

This quote hit home for me:

You absolutely must divorce yourself of sports rooting loyalties and celebrity fandom opiates.

I became a Phila Eagles fan when I was still in grade school when Roman Gabriel became the QB. I loved the Eagles, thru thick and thin, wore my greens on Sunday, watched pre game and post game coverage. Until that August night when during a preseason game the announcer said that the Eagles signed Mike Vick. I was stunned. I turned the TV off and never watched them again until he was off the team. It was brutal at first, that first year, but I watched other games and gutted my way thru it. I wouldn't and couldn't root for a team that held him up as a idol, a hero. And it got me into many heated debates with friends and coworkers. One overstepped his normal arrogance and turned bully, angrily and colorfully 'what kind of fan are you? I told him in a quiet and determined voice, I was human being with ethical standards and would not support a team whose hero murdered living things with his bare hands, along with his friends and thought nothing wrong with that. I asked him if Vick was the guy at the next desk, or lived in the house next door, if he would still consider him a hero. Or because you wear his jersey on Friday to work and get a shine in your eyes because you think he's gonna lead the Eagles to the promised land....He got really angry and shouted "That's not the same thing!. He's anEagle!"

I told him, thank you, you just supported my whole argument

It was a debate that played out on the local sporttalk radio shows, local TV sports shows and almost every sports bar or gatherings in the area. I admired the reporters who felt as strongly as I did about Vick but had a job to do and complied.

I read that earlier. Thought it was fantastic. And especially when it brought up the points about some fans being on their high horses until it hits their home team...i.e. Chicago fans can't lord moral superiority (not that anyone should really) and continue to hold Kane in high regard because of the hypocrisy.

I disagree in that it should mean you give up on your team, but different strokes for different folks. I don't think it's 'wrong' of anyone to do that, it's just not for me--though you certainly won't see me rooting 'for' Voynov anytime soon either.

Sports is usually where we go to escape from the crap that happens in daily life; when our favorite team and sport gets infected with daily issues, do you just give up on your recreation completely for it? I would probably do that if the NHL or the Kings came out and said 'oh well' about what's been happening because they shouldn't be immune to the concerns the normal person is, but they're also flawed human being just like you, I, and everyone else, and I empathize with the capacity of other humans to make mistakes--but more importantly, to learn from them bigtime, as people and players/organization.

Matthews is a bit of an exception since he's highly rated and just missed the cutoff. The big part of his work visa is that he has to wait until he turns 18. Most draft eligible guys are 17 during their draft years, so they wouldn't have the same option. Matthews is an interesting case in that he might not have been surrounded by NCAA hockey like Eichel/Hanifin, so he didn't have interest in being a one-and-done player.

As for guys who are already drafted, the NCAA bound guys can technically play in the AHL at 18/19. The CHL guys are stuck there are part of the agreement with joining the CHL as I understand it.

Dee, this post and article really resonated with me. I know it must have been difficult for you not to follow the Eagles while Vick wore their uniform. My gut tells me I will have to do the same if/when Voynov wears the Kings uniform again. The article expressed it better than I could.

Thank you for this excellent post. Probably the best I've read.
