NHL, NHLPA reach tentative deal on new season, but big hurdle remains - TSN.ca

NHL and NHLPA reach a tentative agreement.

Jan 3 - training camp for 24 playoff teams
Dec 31 - training camp for the non playoff teams
Jan 13- NHL 56 game season starts, no preseason games, all interdivision play

NHL Board of Gov's. has to approve.
The biggest obstacle remains the Canadaian provincial and regional health authorities.

The NHL and its seven Canadian clubs have been in detailed discussions with their provincial and regional health authorities all week, massaging and re-working protocols in an attempt to gain approval to play. That approval has not been granted, raising significant question marks about the feasibility of the division.

If those provincial health authorities cannot be satisfied, well, then the NHL and NHLPA will have to consider alternatives, including a hub city in Edmonton - or potentially moving all seven Canadian teams to the United States for the season.

Some of the details

Players can opt out for family medical reasons ,but won't be paid

> Rosters will be capped at the usual 23 men with an $81.5 million salary cap. Each team will be permitted to carry a four to six player “taxi squad,” which includes a mandatory third goaltender. All 29 (maximum) players will practice and travel with the team.

> NHL players will be paid 72 per cent of their published salaries in 2020-21. Twenty per cent will be taken off the top to repay owners for the revenue shortfall that saw players collect more than their allotted 50-50 share; then another 10 per cent of that 80 per cent remaining will be deferred, to be repaid beginning three years later in installments.

Although the trade deadline has not been cited yet, I'm guessing late March?, LeBrun said in a podcast that he doesn't feel the Canadian provincial health issues would prevent a non Canadian team player traded to a Canadian team, he'd have to follow COVID quarentine restrictions.

Ecstatic that hockey is coming back, but wow the Kings and those other non-playoff 6 teams keep getting hosed. They only get 3 additional days of training camp....and there will be no pre-season games! These guys go from not playing a real game in 10 months to jumping right into the fire. Brutal.

At least they only get hosed and not shafted? That’s all I got. This season will be a shit show, if it happens at all.

I just want our young guys (both on the Kings and in minors) to get ice & development time....somewhere / somehow. Wins/losses -- i don't really care much. We are not a contender this year, so even if we get screwed early on and have some bad results (losses) -- big deal. We get a better draft pick. The season after this one is when i really will care about wins/losses. Right now it's development....wins are simply gravy.

perfect season to roll 4 but experiment with special teams, let em work

really hope i don't see any sub-10min nights for anyone unless they're really stinking up the joint

Los Angeles Kings head coach Todd McLellan: 'It’s time to turn the ship' in rebuild - TSN.ca

“If I’m one of the five long-term veterans coming back, I got to be excited to hear that. I’ve got to be excited about seeing [Blake] bring guys like Olli Maatta in and trading for Lias Andersson. That’s signalling that we’re trying to make our team better and trying to push now up the hill rather than just waiting, not necessarily to bottom out, that’s a bad term, but for the cleanse to finish. I think there’s more stability. But with that comes some responsibility now of turning the ship the right way and moving forward.”

I only kind of disagree. I want us to win the lottery don't get me wrong. But we'd better show some progress, too. These guys do need to have some wins to build some confidence/show some growth after the last two seasons. I don't expect to light the world on fire but there needs to be far fewer games where we just roll over and or let an opponent run up the score. Need to start--quite literally--scrapping for ground.

That I agree with, and I really don't want to see Drew lollygagging for 5 minutes either, cut him to 20 so he plays or keep cutting his minutes until he does. He's got a career-long expectation of 25 minutes no matter how he plays and that's something McLellan is going to have to push on.

Yeah i think we are in agreement here. I'm just saying if we start out the season like crap and a mess due to it being forever since we last played together and a virtually nonexistent preseason, then i won't be crying about losses and worrying about potentially missing the playoffs. I suspect we might be a bit of a cluster-f early on. I'd love to get into the playoffs; i'd love to get the #1 pick. But ultimately, my main concern is young guys getting ice/development time (they need it for the LT).

Yeah, no preseason, ten months off...my god the first 15 games are gonna be entertaining. It's like the undercard fighters, just wild swings till someone dies  or like that early season Edmonton game last year that was like 7-6 or 6-5.

Seems the Flyers were interested in Laine. Not sure of the source.

Seems like recycled news: The interest in Laine, no change on Hoffman and more in 3 Flyers thoughts

The Flyers have had interest in Laine, a source told NBC Sports Philadelphia on Wednesday night. In early October, The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun reported that the Flyers and Jets had trade discussions about Laine but the talks cooled.

I think part of it comes from that Philadelphia has a wealth on defense and might be able to part with a decent forward as well.

It's not giving up a top young d or forward, it's who and what the Jets wanted for what could be a rental player. Laine is Aho's best friend and the Canes wanted him but didn't want to give up a top d, top forward and 1st rounder. THe pen is in Laine's hand, where he wants to sign.
I like Laine, but not for a steep price. We'll see if the fact nobody was willing to pull the trigger changes that.

should have been better. These are unprecedented times and where pre-season games make no sense. Sucks for sure, but I get it.

It's the same roster minus one veteran addition, and it's a defensive defenseman. I'm sure they've all been doing something to keep in some kind of shape. They're not sitting in the couch for 10 months. Maybe Doughty.

I doubt it's much to worry about. I guess if there's an injury you can blame it on that, but injuries happen whenever. Plus 10 months is a lot of time to heal up from the wear and tear.

I think Maata is a huge addition over Hutton.
Roy was HORRIBLE to start the year last year and finished as one of the better on the team . I think that the team will be better by growth and experience.

Stl, Col, and Vegas are the class of the division.
We usually play Vegas well and we were 2-1 against Col last season.
Stl is going to rek us each time we play

I think the games against the Ducks, Coyotes, and Sharks will be crapshoots because of rivalry factor

We have never played well against the Wild and those games won't end well

AKA the Patrick Kane 2015 plan, where he's injured until right after the trade deadline so they can exceed the cap...

I mean that may be true but I'd still rather have Kucherov and make some bad trades to get under cap than not have Kucherov. He's a top five or ten player in the league.

I don't think it's a grand conspiracy. It's just oddly convenient. Especially given he was fine to end the season.

But if I put my tinfoil on, I recall Kane, note that TBL is a playoff team with or without Kucherov, and note that what you said is EXACTLY why they would put Kucherov and not, say, TJ on LTIR :P

I think for the Kings, given the young talent they have , this will be a good time to let them get their minutes in, in all game situations. Put some of the kids together who are fast and see if they can develop chemistry which will be good development for next year. I think the Kings brass knows who and what they are and in crazy year , with no presseaon and condensed schedule, interdivisoin play, with less travel, its a good time to let that youth show what they have. And Blake and Luc can see what they need. 2021-22 is where their sights should be.

The Wild will put the Kings to sleep the entire season. I expect 7 games with the scores 2-1 or 3-2 and I'll fall asleep before 10pm
