Im not convinced that Florida is still in a contention window. They were bad bad last year. Defensively and offensively they looked completely cooked and with a trade like this they only get older. Barkov is coming off a major knee surgery and even if he ever gets back to where he was as we saw out of Svech the last couple years it's going to take a long time for him to get there. And by the time he's there, guys like Marchand will be completely cooked.

But sure, go ahead and push all the futures in on Helle or Larkin now. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they are already in the 'the league has passed us by but we just don't know it, yet' state that Tampa entered a few years back while they were adding Guentzel.

No one accepted that Aho and Slavin were good enough to be cornerstones. In a way they were right, until the rest of the team filled out they weren’t. I think Seattle probably has a good base currently drafted, they just haven’t grown enough yet.
Carolina winning with Aho/Slavin/Svechnikov core is going to convince teams even more to retain talent at all costs and keep adding...good for parity I guess

Intentionally rebuilding if you don’t have to doesn’t really make sense anymore. It takes so long, and it’s getting harder to acquire players. I like the trade today for both teams. Florida is doing what they have to do they can try to keep their window open. Seattle needs players more than picks, they have a ton of picks and Sammie is in the age group of their building core. He reminds me a bit of Stank to honest. Seattle might be shedding some vets it seems, which gives them a chance for fresh blood to take over.

People are making fun of them for getting more “middle six” forwards but you’re not getting a top line forward with the 25th pick….and we just won the cup with a team full of players many people think aren’t better than middle six forwards. Depth wins, if you don’t have stars then winning with depth is the next step. We prove that every year.

The trade makes sense for both teams, and they both still have high first rounders.

And LA entered after 2014…. And Chicago after 2015…. And Pittsburgh after 2017. These multi-cup winners always seem to fall off a cliff without warning, and I’m expecting the Panthers to mostly stall out, too.

The main flaw of most Cup-winning teams is that at a certain point, they stop replenishing their farm and stop prioritizing moves that extend their windows.

Maybe. It wasn't just Barkov though. Not a single player played 82 games for them.

Barkov missed the season.
Reinhart missed 18 games
Marchand missed 30 games
Lundell missed 18 games
Tkachuk missed 51 games
Seth Jones missed 30 games
Kulikov missed 63 games
Lustarinen missed 9 games
Rodrigues missed 13 games
Mikkola missed 14 games
Eckblad missed 10 games

After 3 seasons straight of long playoff runs, it takes a toll.

I mean, if the Senators are savvy, they can maybe make this work before guys like Stutzle or Sanderson want out. It's not the worst haul in the world but Ottawa isn't a team I'd put a lot of trust in to not f*** this up.

Canadian hockey fans will cry "tax free" or whatever but it wasn't that long ago Florida was the dregs of the league. Having competent front office people matters.

Nikishin probably wasn’t even a fit for Ottawa even if they offered him with Sanderson Chabot Kleven on the left side. Obviously Carolina wasn’t trading a Blake or Stankoven either. He would of been a nice add but I’m not sure he’s the perfect fit just due to his skating
