This contract is especially interesting, because unlike Jarvis, the deferred money isn’t awarded as soon as the contract ends. It’s actually awarded 10 years later, in 2035.

Vatrano did this because he expects he’s going to be living in a state with lower taxes than California in 10 years, and thus, he’ll get more of the money he’s deferring.

Technically, it’s the 4th. The Yotes did it with Doan way back when, then a big gap, then we did it with Slavin’s new contract on a very minor level to see if anyone would raise a fuss. No one did, so Jarvis got the same treatment. And now Vatrano.

And people are right that it’s already become somewhat of a slippery slope (going from a very small amount granted immediately after the contract ends to $9 million 10 years from now is kind of crazy), but ultimately, if both sides are OK with it, I don’t see what can be done.

I also think the more dangerous thing could be for 35+ players. Guy like Brent Burns could get offered a weird deal by a capped team like the Bolts an get offered 1 year $3M adjusted caphit where he gets most of it 10 years from now.

It doesn't appear to be circumvention in this case, but rather a way for Anaheim to even the playing field with the likes of Tampa/Nashville/Vegas/Florida, teams with no income tax, or even a team like ours where the income tax is a low, flat rate.

pushing income to the future does have risks for the athlete particularly if the model used misses the mark on a much higher future inflation factor (unless it is auto-adjusted versus fixed....but can you do that in a cap world?).

We covered this when Jarvis' contract was announced. Deferred payments really don't effect Cap space very much. A good way to think of it is: the player "loans" the team money he would have received earlier and gets a bit more in "interest" for that loan when he's paid later. The only part of his overall payment that isn't counted against a team's cap the same as if there were no deferred payment is the "interest" portion. The main part is counted against a team's cap the same as if there had been no deferred payment.

Gotta believe it's mostly an accounting arraignment that let's a player defer $ to benefit his long term tax situation and appear to get a bigger contract than it really is. Doesn't benefit most players, which is why we don't see it very often.
