Honestly, full credit to Mike. I was one of his more vocal critics over the last few years, but he's really grown into the role. He's not messing up names as often, he's following the play better. The only thing I think both he could improve upon is adding the time left in the period into his commentary more often. Since the broadcast is simulcast as the radio feed, it'd help those who are following along on the radio.
I still think I'm spoiled by Forslund because I can still see when Mike is struggling to follow a play where I see something happen and he's well behind.

I really enjoy the movie references he drops in on occasion and his goal and save calls.

I think Tripp is getting better in part because of the sobriety but also because he's emphasizing the things Rod is looking for (the changes for a fresh player for a goal opportunity, good decisions to get the puck out, etc.) Tripp has always focused on little things like that to play an unselfish game, but now with Rod emphasizing it he has more good examples to point to and ones that actually lead to goals.

You know what? I haven't heard much from him this year that's been headshaking.

I think the only thing this year that's still made me shake my head is his insistence on calling wrist and snap shots "drives" and "blasts", as if they are slapshots. Maybe I'm alone in this but I roll my eyes every time I hear it (while also admitting this is a very small thing).

But compared to previous years there are a lot less obvious mistakes. Not to mention, I myself am still getting acclimated to the new guys and frequently confuse Carrier and Walker despite them being opposite handedness of each other (something that's always annoyed me about Mike in the past) and he's been "right" where my eyes have been "wrong" a couple of times on that too.

Good for him.

Since Tripp has sobered up he's been a lot less goofy.

I kinda miss his crazy antics but his mental health is more important than what a bunch of knuckle draggers on a forum think.

Still goofy, less unhinged. Just a wholesome goofball who is in on the joke which wasn't always as apparent as it is now.

I honestly haven't noticed a difference at all. Maybe I will now that you've pointed it out

Never a Mike hater. He pretty much came in cold as a pbp guy and figured it would take time. I was still a bit stunned at how well he got the names right during the prospect games this year; even opposing team players. You can tell he's put time into it. And perhaps just perception but it seems he's bringing out a bit more of the old Tripp this year.

My two gripes with him is the way his voice goes 2 octave higher at some not necessarily impactful or spectacukar plays. The other in a similar vein is he'll make many "great save" calls when they are some fairly basic saves.

If he doesn't say great save then it makes it sound like we put up 40 low-danger shots instead of being robbed/"getting goalied" :sarcasm:

Ovi hattrick against Vegas last night. 29 goals away from the record. This is looking like THE year.
I thought he would have a good chance to get it this season but I also thought he had a decent chance to come out looking old and slow at the beginning of the year and catch fire late to do it. I'm in awe of his start.

I also thought the Caps were better enough that they raised their floor to what their record was last year when they overachieved and maybe a bit higher ceiling but they've blown my expectations out of the water there. Much like us, everything they touched this offseason turned to gold, they have some young players really coming into their own, and Ovi rocks again from the start. I'm very interested to see if they can keep it up.
