Great except for nearly being attacked by some pile of genetic waste in the blue seats while security did f*** all. They finally intervened and just moved the guy away instead of kicking the guy out. I'll bet anything the guy is from Staten Island and the only reason he won't smack around his girlfriend when he gets home is he doesn't have one.

How do you even go about blowing up into a rebuild given the new big name free agents?
You don’t. Which is why you shouldn’t assume a really great coach who made bad rosters look decent and good rosters look great would have any idea how to build a team for someone else to coach.

I said at the time Trotz was building the most anti-Trotz roster of all time and I found it amusing. I didn’t think it would fail spectacularly but it seemed odd

Skinner with 6 points in 14 games, and the Oilers sitting outside the playoffs.

Is there a bigger what if than Jeff Skinner playing his first 5 years for Rod instead of Kurt Muller and Bill Peters?

Maybe, but didn't we jettison Skinner just as Rod took over because the organization knew it wasn't going to be a good fit for the style of play we were aiming for?

I think what Wally is saying is that if 18 year old Jeff Skinner got Rod as a coach from Day 1, we might not see the same Jeff Skinner that the Canes jettisoned when Rod took over 8 years later.

Alright, I can see that. Though I think it would have been a Necas-like situation where the two sides weren't seeing eye to eye and a trade seems all but inevitable

With him being a pending UFA and 25, I don't think the situation was salvageable in the same way an 18yo coming into the league was.

Aside from the penalties, which continue to be some of the softest in the league, does Svech ever lose a player defensively?

Poor pacioretty. It looked like a total nothing play too- got a little tied up with another player but not a hit or a trip or anything that would seem like an injury would follow. I only saw a clip didn’t watch the game though so who knows but I feel bad for the dude he can clearly still play but his body keeps failing him

Skjei had a brutal turnover in OT to cause the Preds to lose to the Avs. I figured the contract would go bad eventually, given how long he signed, but it’s been a VERY rough start for him with Nashville.

Playing the Carolina system goes both ways. I imagine leaving and reacclimating to whatever everyone else does is just as tough as coming in and getting used to playing how the Canes do it.

I've always wondered about this. A guy like Skjei does really well in our system. He gets to move the puck a LOT, shoot a lot, and use his skating to dance and transition. He also had the perfect partner in Pesce to let him do that. He's now playing with Josi, which is a huge step up in skill, and probably a huge adjustment. He can't do his thing in the same way with Josi being the skilled puck distributor. At least in theory.

I always wonder if our defensemen would do better or worse. Slavin would look good anywhere, but a guy like Chatfield may look worse, and a guy like Orlov I suspect would look better. I do think a lot of our defensive success is just a commitment to playing Rod's scheme, and not as much on defensive "talent" as others might think. Or, in other words, some of our key pieces maybe are more replaceable than we might think.

I think there is a lot to the idea that some D look better in this system (Chatfield being a perfect example) than others.

I think Skjei applies less here; I think the situation in Nashville is a combination of leaving a position where he could maximize his good skills in Carolina and going to a pairing where his partner has a lot of the same skills he does with Josi.

Which player is breaking out up ice in that pairing? Which one is shooting and moving the puck in the defensive zone? It's not Skjei in most cases unless Josi is setting him up for a one timer.

Someone (@bleedgreen maybe?) said late last year that someone could do very well signing both Skjei and Pesce as a pairing to really up their defense. I doubt you could get them to agree on a place where a team could pay both what they could get otherwise, but we see that just putting Skjei with any outstanding partner doesn't necessarily work.

Asking Skjei to take on the more defensive role with Josi is probably a mistake. Letting Skjei be a lesser version of Josi on the second pairing would make a lot more sense if Nashville had two defensive RD to allow that.

yep. Not sure who first brought up the idea of signing both but when I looked at the cap situations league-wide I said it would be a great idea for Utah to overpay the two of them by a hair to be their top pair this past offseason. I think Peesh was always looking at a NYC area team if he wasn't going to be re-signed here though.

Yeah, real early on in that FA year, there were rumors about Pesce going to the Islanders or the Devils because of that NY connection. I think his dad also had a tweet or two saying something similar before deleting them
