That's what I said that TDA vs. Chatfield was debatable, not 100% clear-cut, but having a PP that works to its maximum potential isn't small potatoes, either.
That's what I disagree with. It's not debatable.

I like Tony and was in favor of signing him, but he's been bad. I'm not convinced that the PP has much to do with him at all since the scoring is spread out between 1st and 2nd unit.

I'm not giving up on Tony though. it can turn around still.

He and Orlov were a lot worse at the start of the year than in recent games. I think that Orlov playing with more insular partners is helping him adjust to the system.

Edit as soon as i hit post, forsberg beats the goalie 1v1 with a hard wrister.

It's no debate that TDA is our worst defenseman at the moment. That could easily change over the next week or so (though I think the exchange is between he and Orlov, not Chatfield), but right now, Tony is the odd-man out

Yeah, but that's what they've been doing the whole time, right? And they were still a solid playoff team. They're gonna have to go on like a 120 point pace to sniff a wild card right now. Weird, wild stuff.
I don't disagree with this. But on the flip side they were also the beneficiaries of an extremely soft division. Like, enough to make the people that used to mock the "southleast" look and go "what the f*** is this shit" if it didn't mean they'd be ripping on half the Canadian teams in the league as a result. Total paper tiger and it's why I never took any of the talk about being a contender seriously.

Their drafting outside of round 1 has been absolute trash for as long as I can remember... it still is really.

The Oilers have failed to put a decent core around McDavid and Draisitl. Once those two leave the franchise might as well cease to exist.
No, they will draft 1st OA 4 out of next 5 drafts, get gifted a generational talent that will prevent them from getting high draft picks a few years, they will leave and reset the cycle.

That is also over looked, even in the fail for Nail year, they flopped that pick, so when their 1st pick is even garbage....

Oilers almost completing a big trade for presumably Binnington and presumably Binnington saying no thanks is pretty amazing.
Man, I would reject a trade to play behind that defense as well.

At this point, if St Louis is looking to move him and he has to waive, if I was his agent I'd be forcing them to trade him to a team with a solid defensive defense in front of him to rehab his image. I'm not saying the Canes should trade for him, but for someone like him, going to a situation like Carolina is exactly what he needs.

Seriously though, the Oilers barely survived Canada’s last economic downturn and we’re back to that environment again. The city has been pretty damned patient with that franchise, but the billion-dollar arena district is god-awful and now it’s looking like the McDavid/Draisaitl era is headed toward an ugly finish.

If they don’t turn this thing around pretty quick, you have to think both of those guys start seriously weighing their options to move on. Why wouldn’t they? What on earth would tie them to Edmonton other than sentiment, in a place where the sentiment is turning toxic?

If Draisaitl leaves, I think we have a repeat of the Gretzky trade scenario. Combined with the direction of Canada’s economy, that would put the Oilers in a pretty bad position as a franchise.

X & Oiler site suggest McDavid is playing hurt with a bad knee. Usual non-physician opinions abound with some saying he could Bobby Orr his knee with others saying it's OK to play.

Either way, a sub-par McDavid will be a bad season result.

I think they could trade both, suck for a year or two and be a better team than they are now surprisingly quick. It’s difficult to build a team around superstars who make that much. That’s the good part of Aho being great but not quite elite, and the general makeup of our B skill level. Easier to spread the money around and have a well rounded team. We lack the high end skill that can take over a game single-handedly but we’re always competitive, and with the right chemistry we could win it all.

Just to throw some gasoline on the thread.

McDavid for Aho + Slavin

Do you do it?

Speaking out my ass:

No. McDavid has been fellated his whole life by Canadian media. Remember how pissed RBA was when he came here...no way RBA can get McDavid to play defense or listen at all. We need types who thrive out of the big media in Canada just like JK has. I also think we're a worse team on ice /w that swap.

Now what I would do is Slavin (+?) for Draisaitl. Makes less, probably more likely to buy in, is bigger, and a pure finisher.....and we don't lose our 1c. Our defense is good enough to absorb the loss of Slavin, I think? The guy hates losing as was basically in tears after last nights loss to SJ. Seems like someone who would just be thankful to be moved to a contender.
