Interesting article about Caleb Jones.

He mentioned Carolina briefly.

Sportico just came out with their latest franchise valuation estimates.....usual top 3 are Leafs, Rangers, Canadians ($2.65B, $2.45B, $2.27B)...a nice 3 year progression for Dundon:

Just for fun, what do you think a Hurricanes team with McDavid or Draisaitl would look like?

The wheeler signing received a ton of praise but he has 1 assist in 12 games and his ice time has dwindled down to 4th line minutes.
It really is a "young man's game" these days...if you had told me in the summer of 2022 that Patrick Kane coming off a 92 pt season would be unemployed after the 2023 season at age 34, I'd have thought you were nuts. At this point he's just going to be someone's UFA TDL addition like JWilly did for us his last year.

to be fair, I think the only reaason 20cent isn't signed is he's waiting to be recovered from his injury and will decide based on what teams from markets that he wants to play in are in a good position competitively and with the cap.

True, I forgot about the injury issue, but these days it seems like any player that "loses a step" is instantly like 4-5 steps behind...the game is just so fast these days.

dumping Addison by the Wild must them getting tired of Addison's lost in the D zone play.

Also, oilers getting Binnington would be the one of the most Oiler like solution to their problem

The most Oiler thing imagineable would be for them to throw the goalie under the bus because they've put together a sorry ass group of defensive players who are incapable of winning if their superhuman McJesus isn't playing at superhuman levels. I don't care who is in net for them, the amount of Grade A chances they give up will get anyone lit TF up.

Oh, and while we're at it, lets not overlook that NJ is quietly setting themselves up to be the Oilers of the East with all offense and YOLO defense. It was very telling that our group of forwards carved them apart in the playoffs last year.

It's always a young man's game, especially if we're talking about scoring points. Hockey back then used to be even more of a young man's game. Lifestyle choices and fitness choices led careers to fall off of a cliff in their late 20s rather than the mid-30s, as we see today. The fitness of today's great players extends their careers well past what they used to. It's just that for the majority, ages 36-37 is just an edge too far.

Also, with a couple of exceptions, the older teams on average (rosters around the late-20s) are the better teams in the league.

Depends. Are we signing one (or both I guess) as UFA because they want to win (i.e. not having to give up assets and cap hit not coming in quite at $15M or whatever they could get in UFA if they want the most $$$)? Or are we trading for one of them this deadline?

In the former case I think we'd be potential dynasty, honestly. Like Golden State Warriors after signing KD. But that's just not realistic, neither would take that much of a discount and I don't actually see either hitting UFA -- Oilers would never just let either walk for nothing, if they believed there's any chance of that they'd trade them first and the acquiring team would want a new deal. But in that dream world I do believe adding the best player in hockey (or 2nd best) to this current team and only subtracting (could trade for futures) let's say Orlov & Fast would result in a dynasty team.

In a trade scenario, we'd have to gut the roster of some pretty significant pieces and then allocate a ton of cap to one of those guys. Let's say a trade for McDavid looks like -- Svech, Kotkaniemi, Nikishin, 1st. Not even sure that gets it done for the Oilers but even if it would that's a hell of a lot to give up for 1 player no matter how good he is. It would be interesting and maybe in the short term if Necas/Jarvis/Turbo stepped up on the wing this could be an improvement but even then it would be a risk in the short term and a bigger risk in the long term. I think the amount we'd have to give up to realistically get a McDavid would be more of a downgrade than the upgrade of adding him.

Neither player would fit into our system, at least they probably wouldn't enjoy it.

Just more proof that owning one of these teams isn't going to be a reality short of winning the $20 billion lottery or something.

The days of individual owners are coming to an end. The final form of professional sports is a bunch of conglomerates soullessly competing against one another while being in league together in a monopoly.

AKA. English Football, though I don't think it's actually soulless. It's rather entertaining for me to see Middle Eastern oil billionaire collectives constantly one-up themselves in a d*ck-measuring contest.
