Serious question -- are we really talking about someone so random that he's "some guy" and not an actual figure in real-world hockey by either name or title? Like this is just Canes Fan #52739 doing something gross online?
Apparently the person is a fellow fan known in the twitter circles, but not anyone I've ever seen before. I don't think its a major figure in the fanbase, just some rando that others knew

Pretty much. I had no clue who he was, I recognize a lot of "the core" from their avatars or what they write in their bio/have pinned. There's like 15-20 regulars that show up in my feed, he wasn't one of them.

But several are stating they personally knew him.

Ok, so this is self-created Twitter fan drama.

Still waiting for the moment where I regret getting off that platform.

If there is anything our Twitter fans love more than the Canes it's loudly touting their own self importance and thinking anything happening inside their tiny circle is a major NHL scandal

Yeah, and God forbid you go against the groupthink in that circle. Not in this particular case, because f*** that creep, but in terms of hockey, if you're OK with trading TT/Pesce/whoever to improve the team, suddenly you've got 20 random Canes fans defending the one person you responded to

And you KNOW those are the STHs screaming SHOOT all game long.

Much like other fandoms, it’s evident that some people think their meaningless online chatter is “connected to the NHL”.

Seems like an okay enough move, but Detroit still just feels so meh. I guess if everything goes exactly right, they could have a Seattle-like year of overperforming expectations as a bunch of okay depth players plays over its head. But I'd still put my faith in a few of the other young teams that finished around them last year before them.

Jeff Petry flipped to Detroit for a defenseman I've never heard of but a quick Google search suggests has been playing for the Wings for 3 seasons.
Lindstrom is very meh and notable only for the fact that his name is actually spelled the way everyone misspelled Lidstrom's.

Detroit gets an aging kinda 2nd pair on a good day guy and Montreal gets a young bottom pair/7D guy and a pick. I guess Detroit gets marginally better for a few years.

I'm pretty sure when they translated the film Fletch for the Swedish audiences, they used Lind- instead of Rosen-.

I feel like if we got Petry at a 75% discount (or whatever it is) before we gathered our army of d this summer we would be bragging about how shrewd we are at bargaining and how it was a sneaky good move compared to the money others had spent.

It’s a good move.
And just like if we traded for Petry right now, the deal doesn’t make sense. Detroit already has a top 6 defense.

We’re keeping Skjei and Pesce despite probably losing both next off season, when after Orlov we all assumed one if not both were gone. Then we added Tony. And Jones. We already had six and now we have an amount that by your logic shouldn’t make sense. Yet we’re going to celebrate our genius of figuring out having D depth is a good thing….while talking smack about others who do the same thing. It’s curious. Why is it smart when we do it but nonsensical if someone else does?

if you look at the situations, you will see why it isn’t the same. 1 team traded for a surplus. 1 team just signed them.

Also we have people not liking all the defensive signings.

Are you calling out hypocrisy based on false pretenses?

Petry at 75% off is a good value…. He isn’t the player he used to be. But at his now discounted cap rate, it’s awfully hard to argue with that value.

Toronto paid a first rounder for a similar retained salary cap dman in McCabe…. I look at it as a smart GM move for Detroit for the value received…. Whether Detroit really needs a top 4ish right d and whether or not that limits their prospects or better players already on their roster is outside the scope of the value evaluation. In an absolute sense, ther should have been a number of teams interested in a 75% off Petry….

I wasn’t a fan of Waddell comment today saying they were shrugging their shoulders at losing signed players to waivers as their solution to how we have too many d men on the roster right now…. He was trying to avoid the question about whether or not he expected to actually trade Skjei/Pesce or if he was committed to planning to keeping them unless we get x for them in terms of our plans for roster construction…. Not sure how we are now happy with our forward group when we had a signed deal for a top 6 level winger that is not here only because they balked at the last second before the contract was filed…

Tarasenko wasn’t going to make or break our offseason. We didn’t miss out on any other available forwards so far.

We didn’t have the young forward to move for PLD (and likely wanted a large city market) and we weren’t on Cat’s list.

We got bunting out of the best available group. Not much else we could do.

The move was fine for Detroit from a value perspective, but it still just feels like the sum of all the moves Detroit made has been to go from an 80 point team to like an 84 point team. Kudos to them I guess.

I guess I don’t see the difference between signing or trading for them. Petry is a good player, the best dman they added this off season. Hesitating to acquire a player at a huge discount that improves your team just because you’ve already made other moves doesn’t make a lot of sense. Petry is low risk and only two years. I suspect they wouldnt have signed Holl if they knew they could get Petry like this.
