Duchene is pretty much the idea 'buy low' kind of player we covet. I wouldn't be shocked if there is mutual interest to get him for a 3 year deal on a competitive, Cup contending team knowing it likely boosts his profile for a bigger 2026 contract
Hasn't every team Duchene been on underperformed in the playoffs? He's never won a cup or has he?

Duchene scored 56 in 71 just last year. That would have been 4th on the canes, behind only necas aho and burns

Compared to the Canes year over year....

2022-23, he would be 4th ahead of Svechnikov and behind Burns
2021-22 he would be 1st
2020-21 he would be T-13 with McGinn and Martinook
2019-20 he would be 4th ahead of Hamilton and behind Svechnikov
2018-19 he would be 3rd ahead of Williams and behind Teravainen

Hell of an opportunity if that is a buy low.

I mean hell, just looking through his year over year numbers and knowing he was just bought out by Nashville, adding him seems like a complete no-brainer. Hell, he puts up the kind of numbers that makes you consider bringing him in on something that is a bit longer than a prove-it deal, which allows us a little flexibility in not feeling like we absolutely must hold onto someone like Necas down the line.

Question is, what will it cost to sign him? We are not the only team where he might be a good fit. That means he won’t be a bargain. Could still be worth it, but I’m skeptical he chooses us over a team like Dallas.

I don't know if I would say that.

He's been to the playoffs 6 times. 2010 and 2014 with Colorado, 2019 with Columbus, 2020, 2021, and 2022 with Nashville.

2010 was a 1st round loss to San Jose, who got swept by Chicago in the WCF - 0G, 3A in 6 games
2014 was a 1st round upset loss to Minnesota, but Duchene got hurt in Game 2 - 0G, 3A in 3 games
2018 was on the Columbus team that swept the record breaking Lightning - 5G, 5A in 10 games
2020 was an upset loss to Arizona in the bubble - 1G, 1A in 4 games
2021 was a 1st round loss to Carolina - 1G, 2A in 6 games
2022 was a 1st round loss to Colorado, who won the Cup - 3G, 1A in 4 games

Probably the only one that you can really say was a disappointment was the loss in the bubble, but that whole situation was f***ed. You almost have to asterisk that whole shit show

I see some team overpaying for Duchene because of his point totals. Ill be thankful when it wont be us. His two play and forecheck efforts are low.

Add in you don’t buy out a guy with those scoring numbers unless you need a change in the locker room.

Guy who averages 63 points per 82 games over his entire career would absolutely be a welcome add here. My goodness, you don't get scoring without paying for it, at some point we have to be that team that pays for it.

Hell, if you remove the bullshit bubble year, he's been on a 72 point pace every year since our current run in 2018-19 started, which would put him top 3 for us every year over that same span. And he can do this while playing center, which would give us a ton of options in terms of how to play KK and possibly load manage Staal.

And likely stuff going on in the locker room to do this buy out. Just like Suter and Co In Minnesota. They were a drag in the locker room and the team needed a change.

Edit: now reading some Preds fans’ comments it seems his laziness and LR voice points are founded.

Do you know this for a fact or are you just projecting because he was bought out, which could have happened for a variety of reasons.

The only time I've ever heard anyone accuse him of being an issue is at the end of his tenure with Colorado when he just wanted out with a team already making it known they were looking to move him. And even then the players themselves said they didn't blame him for how he handled things, they were just happy to be able to move on.

No surprise here.

Well that's certainly one way to ensure they need Bob to go superhuman again to advance in the playoffs

I edited: looking over the main forum, preds fans are posting about his laziness and likely LR voice issue

Vladimir Tarasenko to Carolina Hurricanes

Yes, the Hurricanes may be taking a gamble on the forward, who's had surgery on the same shoulder three times. But Tarasenko still has it, as he showed in the 2021-22 season when, coming off the third surgery, he had 82 points (34 goals, 48 assists) in 75 games with the St. Louis Blues. Tarasenko had 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists) in 38 games for the Blues last season before they traded him to the New York Rangers, where he had 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) in 21 regular-season games and four points (three goals, one assist) in seven playoff games. What did Carolina miss the most down the stretch -- and in the playoffs -- last season? Scoring, because Andrei Svechnikov had surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee in March, and Max Pacioretty only played in three games due to a twice-torn Achilles tendon. Tarasenko would be a valuable commodity for any team, including the Hurricanes. -- Tracey Mye

In case anyone is wondering how the Leafs fans are handling their Core Four contracts coming due and the reality of actually giving them equitable extensions....

Not well

The lack of playoff success in Toronto is, in many ways, certainly making the problem worse. The Leafs front office historically also have not been known as the type to use creative destruction in the same way that the Canes have to keep the overall roster as deep as it is.
