As opposed to two years of Gus?

Yes to 3 years of Ghost, a million times over, yes.

Well it'd be $1.2 million over actually because that's how much more Ghost's contract is. Gus has had a rough start but no thank you to 3 years of Ghost.

Ghost is off to a hot start but I'm guessing he won't maintain 25% shooting percentage. And Gus should get better as he adjusts to the team. But even if Gus sits in the press box, not having Ghost out there will cost the team some goals but should help them keep the puck out of their own net, which has been their biggest problem.

3.2 million for a 56 pt D man for 3 years is a bargain. Our PP was top 10 last year with that guy.

Much better than 2 million for 2 years of a guy who has helped make our PP bottom 5 in the league, and he isn't helping at all in keeping pucks out of the net, or keeping his sorry ass out of the penalty box.

Look, maybe Gus turns it around, but that is just copium talk right now. The play on the ice says one guy is pretty good and the other guy is awful.

yeah, I have no real interest in Ghost being back and watching Gus...eh.
Yeah, we have no idea on how negotiations went down with Ghost, he was likely looking for a raise from his last year's contract and term from SY, once Stevie said no thank you before July 1, I suspect Ghost took the best deal he could with a contender, the deal Ghost signed with the Caines may not have even been extended to the wings, we just don't know.

Not that Gus tickles my fancy at all, but a 2 year deal is easier to manage as yutes start to arrive and plugs depart.

Ah, for less than ten game sample sizes.

Ghost did put up 56 pts for us last season, that wasn't a 10 game or less sample.

But, all you hockey know it alls, plant your flag now. Who will have the better season? Shayne Gostisbehere or Eric Gustafsson?

I would venture a guess, by the time the season is over, every GM in hockey would prefer Ghost to Gus, in fact, I bet they already do, except for one who penny pinched this offseason because he had two big deals to get done. I understand why, but sadly, the moves on the blue line this offseason have set us back.

The irony of you calling people "hockey know it alls" while you compare our PP this year to last year's, after a sample size of SIX GAMES is incredible. But whatever floats your boat.

How about neither. Yzerman has had several chances to sign Luke Schenn over the past several years. Guy always at or near the top of the list in hits and blocked shots, can play D and fight as well. And he comes cheap in cost and term. But instead we get one dimensional offensive guys to take Seider's spot on the #1 pp unit. I don't know.

I get letting Ghost walk due to the combination of $$ and term. I get signing Gus to help fill the PP void. What I don't like is how much run Gus has had through 6 games after playing so poorly. Long-term this season you have to continue trying to work him in, I get that, but he's bad right now. Sit him. Having Edvinsson run a PP right now doesn't exactly thrill me, but give him the PP minutes. Give the ES minutes to AlJo.

Ghost started off hot last year and finished the season top 20 in defense scoring.
Also, Gus is probably worse than Ghost defensively while not being anywhere near Ghost's offensive talent level.

10000 times out of 10000 I'd rather have Ghost than Gus. Even at a higher cap hit and longer term. Like I keep saying on these boards, you get what you pay for. You want a 2 million AAV budget offensive defenseman? You'll get all the bad that comes along with that.

Schenn or Tanev are exactly what this team needs. Hell, I'd even take Gudas.

After 5 games. And Ghost's 56 points last season is his highest since 2018.

Signing Ghost means Seider moves off of PP one to the second unit, because Ghost is a power play specialist you don't want playing that much ES. Last season he had less ES icetime than everyone but Maatta and Holl and still managed to be a -16.

At one year of bringing Ghost back, sure. 2 years, eh. 3 years at $3.2 million? No thanks.

And this is all assuming he would've come back here over Carolina for the same offer. Carolina is a good fit for him because he can slot in as a better version of D'Angelo.

Gus is off to a bad start but overall he is not worse than Ghost defensively.

And like I said above, this all assumes that an equal deal to Carolina would've kept Ghost in Detroit. we'll see how it plays out in the next three years but taking into account his career production it seems unlikely Ghost continues to produce like he did last season.

The plan is to stop signing these mediocre vets as the team hopefully improves. 3 years of Ghost goes against that.

Pretty much this. Also, I'm not going to be an alarmist about Gus's poor initial showing. It can take some new guys 1/4 - 1/3 of the season to find their footing with a new team. If he flops; swing and miss at free agency. Even so, I'm sure as shit not going to pine for Ghost to be back.

I forget - Which apps/websites do you guys use to look at game stats if you're busy or not able to watch live and just want to see something a little more 'advanced' like possession time and scoring chances? I wish I had something to look at similar to what Keats/Ozzie look at during intermission but it seems like the main apps/sites don't have it.
