Nobody should be shocked... this certainly isn't a Russia only thing, but as a whole, their views are much more harsh on LGBTQ+ rights than in US/Canada. A higher proportion of them will naturally have issues with Pride Nights. IMO I think their views are misguided and hurtful, but this isn't shocking news.

Russians in general are notoriously anti gay rights but If Ovi says that they were wearing the jerseys strictly because of political pressure, chances are that's how most players perceived it.

These are the details that were missing, and they are damning. The way Biz talked about it, they had an inkling but not the proof... then the floodgates opened.

I hope at least one Jackets player told him to f*** off
Babcock doesn't target players that are in a position to tell him to f*** off. That's the whole point.

He'll ask vets to show him pics of their wives and dogs while rookies have to hand him their phones so he can go through all their pics and personal stuff. Dick pics and naked girlfriends included.

It was already well known that Babcock has always had completely different standards for top of the lineup veteran players and rookie or marginal veterans. It seems like he does everything he can to stay in the good graces of the first group, and then pulls every psychological trick he can on the others. In his mind he probably thinks the second group need his "tougher" coaching methods.

As an example, the famous case of benching Spezza for the home opener, was probably Babcock's way of telling Spezza he needs to know and accept his role as a bottom of the lineup player.

Scrutinizing younger players' phones was probably his way of letting them know that he wouldn't tolerate any shenanigans.

Honestly everything I know about Babcock makes him sound like a completely exhausting person.
he's not even a great coach, his teams never got out of the 1st round after his stacked cup.

He targeted Marner before, who was in every position to tell him to f*** off.

Doesn't matter if he was a rookie, he was making the team and going to play a prominent role.

Similar to certain Jackets players now.
I just don't see a teenager telling his head coach, the guy deciding his ice time, to "f*** off". This could be career suicide. No matter how right he would have been doing so.

18 yo kid who just got in the NHL isn't going to tell an old coach like Babcock to f*** off.

Babcock knows what he's doing and who to target. Listen to yesterday's Seravalli podcast, it's well explained in there.

Also Seravalli ripped Jarmo Kekalainen on that show. He said that it was 10 years of failure and if he (Jarmo) thinks that it was hard to get players before, it's about to get much worse.

Yeah thats the kind of info that was simply absent from the public domain in all of this. Easy decision to dump the guy and once again begs the question of why even hire him in the first place.

Legit sociopath behavior.
What it comes down to is Columbus wanted another hardass coach. They performed their best, by far, under Torts. Torts is a different type of hardass, but a both are that type of coach. Those are dying breed in hockey and many of them have baggage. The one that doesn't have much is Sutter and I doubt he would coach in Columbus. Maybe they could have pulled Randy Carlyle back in, but he sucks schematically in today's NHL. There are just not a whole lot of options for those guys. They took a large risk and it blew up in their faces.

This isn't a player asking for PP time or being taken off the top line.

If a coach asked me to go through my phone, at 18, I'm telling him to f*** off. I'm telling that to any employer in any profession.

He is disgusting. He is gone for good I think. His last chance in NHL or at least should be.
