I was a big fan of Newhooks potential.

That said here is my overall take:
Was he given opportunities? Yes. Did he likely want more? Yes.
Was he anything close to a 2C for a cup contending team? No.
Might he be better on a non-contending team with a player friendly coach? Yes as he will get more leash presumably.

I always think there is a need for self reflection in life. If you didn't get a job or promotion... what about your skill set or interview stopped you from getting it? Don't lash out at the boss or hiring manager for being an idiot, learn why and take that to heart. Work to improve. I would like to see some of that from Newhook... instead of bemoaning a coach not trusting him or a lack of opportunity, maybe reflect on why it didn't work and express things that he could work on and be better at. That is not a maturity that most 22 year olds have and is probably an unreasonable expectation, but that is what is really needed for him to take some steps.

I did get a kick out of him saying in his press conference that his skating is something he can add to the team. For the love of god, somebody please sit this kid down and explain to him that his skating is not that good at this level. He needs to find another calling card to his game to succeed. IMO become tenacious and work on his release in tight spaces to get it off quickly and accurately... with volume. If he does those two things, he's a 50 point winger with ease who may have a 30g season or two in his pocket. If he's gonna float in his one spot, not battle, and need 5' of space to get his shot off... he's gonna never improve from where he is outside of being spoonfed top PP minutes.

Newhook is just repeating the same boilerplate any player who just got traded says. Almost same exact thing Burakovsky said when he came here. I don't think it was personal (actually listen to the interview) and we don't need to take it as such.

All having traded Newhook and Kaut in the past season tells me is, if the 1st round pick is past 10th overall, could we please just f***ing trade it? How many more of these guys do we have to try and find from 15th-20th overall? Ain't happening boys, ship it off
I hear what you are saying and I'm not disagreeing but as long as they get very good value in trade from these players I am not as upset as some are here. Getting Lehky and Colton were really good value also being better fit for the team. But yeah it would be nice to finally hit on some of those picks. Hopefully this past draft is a start in that direction.

Now im arguing with people on Twitter that think the Avs are slow. FML. I almost cant wait to see Hab fans reaction to who Newhook really is. Avs to slow for Newhook style. f*** right off.
People are dumb... I will say the footspeed of the Avs is fairly overrated. Plenty of plodders like Rants, Nuke, Landy, EJ, etc. But the pace is pretty high because they pass the puck crisply and quickly. The players that skate with it, can usually skate pretty damn well. Looking at last year's forward group, MacK, LOC, Cogs, ERod, and Helm were clearly better skaters. I'd even say Compher and Lehky too. On the back end Toews, Makar, and Byram clearly are. This doesn't even get into G, Malgin, etc. That's a legit 8, arguably 10+ better skaters than Newhook.

I swear people read scout reports online and just take them as God's word.

I legit said Newhook might not even be in the top 10 for the Avs in skating and holy did that piss off some of the Hab fans lol I even brought up the fact that Newhook so call speed isnt good enough to give him time and space to let his shot go. They seem to think they got Bure like speed from Newhook when really its closer to Chris Higgins speed.

That is probably about to change

This is a great comparison. Not just speed wise. Newhook to date is a quite a bit like a less gritty Chris Higgins

Both of these guys can skate... but where is this idea that Colton can't pass coming from? I wouldn't say he's amazing at it, but he's a solid playmaker. Similar, if not better level than Newhook.
He's a shoot first guy who doesn't get many assists...but I was kidding, mostly.

Wood though there are many NJ fans reporting that he just can't make a pass to save his life.

Wood certainly can't. He's a crash and bang guy pure and simple.

Colton though... he doesn't get many assists because he's just not a good 2nd assist leech. 5v5 17 of his 25 assists are first assists. 23 of his 36 in all situations. 7 of his 9 playoff assists are first assists. Some of that is style of play, some of it is linemates and system. The 2nd assists will increase as he plays with the Avs. If you want to really evaluate it stats wise though, you have to get to more micro in chance assists, primary shot assists and shot assists (this includes both primary and secondary). He doesn't provide a ton of chance assists, below average 40-50% range. #1 reason why, he doesn't pass off the rush, he shoots. He's something like bottom 5-10% in passing off the rush. Where he excels is shot assists. He is a top end shot assist guy... somewhere in the top 20-25% (was top 15 two seasons ago). Which means he's touching the puck and moving correctly. Some of this is his linemates too as his secondary numbers are higher than his primary. Yet, his primary is still top third over the last two seasons... was pushing top 25% in 21-22. Dude can pass the puck just fine. He's not going to pull off some crazy passes like Rants, but he's not a Cy Young candidate either.
