When they get to Dermy. "He is a hockey player."

Reminds me of one time many years ago I went to an Avs game and they played the intro video they always play for the roster, usually a fancy graphic and picture of the player flashing across the screen, followed by a highlight or two. The video gets to Ryan O'Byrne and all they can muster is a quick snippet of him falling onto the ice and getting back up, that they play back and forth real quick in time with the cheesy music, and that's it.

My favourite was from that 48 point season where everyone was so trash that all they could to do is just mention games played. "Carl Soderberg....ummm he was on the team! Here are some pics...."
"John Mitchell played 65 games."
"Jeremy Smith is taller than some people."

No, not true. This blindsided a lot of people in the organization. He wasn’t trying to get Shanny fired, he just wanted more autonomy, which is understandable.
Dubas is getting the full meal deal in Pittsburgh which he already knew before presenting his case to MLSE himself . He wanted both jobs is what's being said all over Canadian news.

Can't blame him. It's alson been said he still holds animosity for Shanny blocking his move to the Avs.

And there was just a 32 Thoughts pod where Marek and Friedman laughed about a time that the Leafs got absolutely enraged when the HNIC panel was regurgitating rumored information regarding a trade that involved Fleury and Matthew Knies. Truth is, they don't know or are purposely peddling misinformation. I don't trust that narrative for a moment--it's just them trying to ramp up the drama.

I don't buy for a moment that he wanted Shanny's job. As Henchy put it, he wanted more autonomy and/or a direct line to the MLSE board, which would marginalize Shanahan a bit but not eliminate him entirely. He probably knew it wouldn't happen but I also don't think he expected Shanahan to abruptly end negotiations right then and there.

I'll believe the Pittsburgh thing when I see it. If I'm the new prospective owner of the Ottawa Senators I'm getting his number.

The one thing I respect the hell out of Dubas for is that everyone is talking and saying this and that...except for Dubas himself. I like a man whose action say it all. I also respect the hell out of Spezza for walking before Shannahan could even attempt to defend himself. He doesn't have time for Shannahanagans.

There's numerous stories of him being an outstanding human being, which is somewhat funny because he's shown he can be a very fiery and temperamental guy under certain circumstances.

He will most definitely get another front office shot soon. Just depends on whether or not he wants to take a year off or not.

Yeah I recently learned that he stayed over night with Mikheyev when he got his arm slashed to help out with the language barrier and stuff. Very awesome thing to do to make your guys comfortable in a stressful situation.

Seemed like an extremely popular guy.

Well the 32 thoughts guys are into fairy tales.

It's pretty much a given Dubas has the Pens job.......apparently.

You can't look at this one way. It was reported Shanahan/the Board rejected several trades. But how many deals fell through because Guv'ner Bob was on his yacht and couldn't be reached?

They're approving a significant number of moves, yet Dubas is at fault when the moves that the Board signs off on don't work?

And then theres: "Sorry, Kyle...can't sign off on this but keep working hard on more deals."

Shanahan/the Board want a donkey that's also a puppet.

Dubas wanted a directly line of communication to the board on moves. Shanahan would have been involved in that conversation still. It just wouldn't have been Shanahan presenting the moves for Dubas and then relaying the decision back.

That isn't why Dubas' contract wasn't renewed though. The Leafs had another failed season, Shanahan is feeling heat, and Dubas wanted to stick with his guys. There needed to be a fall guy for the failure... so Dubas is a pretty natural choice given his contract was up. It doesn't need to be a spy novel.

This is not at all what happened.

Shanahan said he liked what Dubas did and wanted him to return. He didn't decide to make him the "fall guy" until he acted like he wasn't gonna return and then made a bunch of demands.

What's wrong with that? His boss gets to overrule him and he doesn't have any direct contact to Shannys boss. That seems like a less than ideal work scenario as a NHL GM. I'm sure that Dubas told them if I'm coming back I want more autonomy which is a more than fair demand if you're running a NHL team imo.

I don't think he ever acted like he wasn't going to return. I believe him when he said that he was unaware of the impact his job had on his family and that revelation rattled him a bit. I also believe him when he said he was up front with the Leafs every step of the way, the only thing he did against the organization's wishes was hold that presser. But I don't believe for a second that Shanahan was blindsided by Dubas's remarks. And even if he was, to upend the whole plan because your GM had an unscheduled presser and said some things to the press is just plain stupid.
