I haven't listened to it, but according to Reddit Friedman said something to that accord on the Jeff Marek show a few hours ago. Or at least that when Arizona is looked at as an expansion option, Meruelo would be the first guy in line to have an option for that franchise.
In some ways, it would be like the Seals/North Stars/Sharks/Stars move mess. Delta Center is a far from ideal venue, but it will still seat ~13k and have ownership who is willing to get moving on a long-term solution (SLC has already approved public funding for a new arena).

That plan would make sense... probably a reduced expansion fee if Arizona is one of the teams (close to this sale). If not, move ahead with Houston and Atlanta.

Obviously bigger things going on today but man this year's Calder race was one of the worst I've ever seen. All three of the biggest contenders (Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson) missed significant time due to injuries that either derailed or flat out ended their seasons. And all three of them played for grossly incompetent teams. Yes, I know, all rookies who vie for the Calder usually play for bad teams but the (lack of) talent surrounding these guys, not to mention some of the questionable management/coaching, made this into a turtle derby.

Also, Brock Faber certainly had a good rookie season, but I never bought into him being a legit contender.

Faber should win it IMO. Kid stepped into the NHL and became a #1D in his rookie year.

Meh, underlying numbers down the stretch had him looking pretty bad after a strong start but that might have just been the fact that Minny is a bad team.

Just an underwhelming rookie class IMO. Fantilli's the one that has me just pissed off. He was put in a position to fail from the start by the worst coach in the league. I also expected more from Logan Cooley.

Was Slaf even eligible this year?

Americans, what's in Utah that might become the inspiration for the team name?

Canyons, Latter Day Saints, the Osmond Bothers, and one very salty lake.

Good luck with a team name. I'd just keep "Coyotes".

Utah Fundamentalists, Utah Trumpets, LDS Missionaries, Utah Don't Forget to Tithe, Salt Lake Temple Garments

(My bet is it will be the Eagles, Golden Eagles or something close to that)

Friedman says it could be done by next week :amazed:
The NHL and the Arizona Coyotes are preparing for the possibility of a move to Utah as soon as April 18, multiple sources confirmed Wednesday.

The team’s final game is at home against Edmonton next Wednesday. One Coyote indicated today that there are rumours of “meeting about the future” before everyone goes their separate ways for the off-season.

The league sent a memo to its Board of Governors indicating progress in talks to move the team to Utah, but several sources warned to be careful about making any absolute proclamations. “There is a lot that needs to be done,” one said, although it is clear this is a major priority, with maximum effort and speed utilized to reach a finish line.

The NHL is working as the broker, handling negotiations with both current Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo and prospective Utah steward Ryan Smith. Initially, the hope was to let the June 27 auction play out, but two concerns emerged: first, about what would happen if the Meruelo lost the auction, and second, the possibility of three more seasons at Mullett Arena. There wasn’t much enthusiasm for the latter.

Multiple sources indicate a real scenario is Meruelo being paid $1 billion for the team, and Smith paying $1.2 billion to purchase. But the real key is what the NHL will promise Meruelo to avoid this ending up in court.

Those same sources indicate he could be offered a five-year exclusive window to “bring back” the Coyotes as an expansion franchise — although there would be certain language stating what would need to be accomplished for him to return. (The league definitely desires a return to the market if it leaves.)

Obviously, there is a lot that still needs to happen, but a move is gaining momentum.

Honeybees would be the obvious albeit hilarious one, at one point the LDS leaders proposed a state named "Deseret" which is the word for honeybee in the Book of Mormon. Utah's new state flag also has a beehive right in the middle of it. I'm guessing that will NOT be the name  but I think there was a minor league team in Cincinnati called the "Stingers." There is a minor league baseball team called the Salt Lake Bees (I'm learning just now they were also once called the Stingers).

Beyond that they could go the "Pioneers/Trailblazers/Pathfinders/blah blah blah" route but a lot of those names have all been done to death.

I do agree with Henchy, it'll likely be something along the lines of "Golden Eagles" to honor the minor league team that used to be there, though they obviously won't go with "Golden" since that's already taken.

The more I think about "Golden Knights" the more I don't like that name. I didn't like it much to begin with but at least the Golden Eagle actually has something to do with Utah.

Good luck with a team name. I'd just keep "Coyotes".
That ain't happenin'. The team name will stay until the expansion team arrives (and probably leaves again).

Holy shit that'd be awesome.

If they had Ice Girls we know what their hair would look like.
Yes... but we know they'd be fully clothed from the neck down.

That better be SLC Hive then, because "Utah Hive" sounds hideous and awful to pronounce. Say that 5 times fast. "Utah Hive, Utahhive, Utahive, Utah HIV"...
I'd be very surprised if they only went with Salt Lake as the name.

The 5 year exclusive window makes a ton of sense in how this is playing out. The NHL wanted the expansion fee from Smith as he is more than willing to pay up. Instead they'll get a relocation fee (~250m) and then an expansion fee in a few years anyway. We will probably get Arizona, Houston and Atlanta in the 27-29 range.

How do you think Altitude Sports feels about the concept of a Utah team, that would eat into our regional coverage and fanbase, no?
