I don't like how Kuch is leading the league in points by a lot. Feels like 2018 (just before Earth became an unlivable wasteland)

Ask @ABasin how advocating for that goes. My lord, even though he was right, the amount of crap he took over suggesting we should trade Sakic was incredible.

LOL, thanks for the trip down memory lane, Tex.

There is one difference between now and then though. When I was advocating for a full rebuild back then, the best players on the team (Sakic, Foote, Blake, Forsberg, Roy) were all over 30, and a few of them were in their mid-30s. Once the league came back from the lockout, and the Avs two best players were 36 year old Sakic and 35 year old Blake, it was damn bloody obvious that they needed to start over. Alas, they did not.

Right now, the situation is different. The top three guys are mid-20s to upper 20s. I believe the Avs will be a highly competitive team for this season and next, have a shot at being championship caliber.

After that, the Avs can continue to similarly compete, but IMO it will require one thing in particular: They need to nail 2-3 drafts in a row, including last year's. Tough to do picking at #25 or above, and with no 2nd/3rd round picks. But that's what it will take.

Honestly, I'd rather watch this core ride off into the sunset in this jersey than ever see them traded. I personally wouldn't have wanted to see guys like Sakic and Hejduk play in another jersey in exchange for being competitive sooner. From a cold-blooded strategic standpoint, the Pens made the wrong move not trading Crosby years ago, but ask any Pens fan if they would have wanted to see that happen in exchange for a quicker rebuild that may or may not even succeed. I'll bet if you posted a poll in the Pens forum asking that question the results would surprise you.

Rebuilds always happen eventually, and statistically, most of them don't ever result in a Cup win.
I think rebuilds can come in different shapes and sizes. And a lot depends on how a newly rebuilding team maximizes its current assets. Some (correctly) bite the bullet, and trade their still-quality/still-popular players in return for significant assets/picks, and not only shorten the rebuild time, but they also increase the likelihood that the rebuild will be successful. Just passively sucking and drafting high can work, but accelerating the process with the aforementioned asset management is usually better.

The post lockout Avs did not do this, and instead went 100% the nostalgia route: keeping their over the hill popular players, trading draft picks for more former over the hill popular players, putting up shrines in the locker room, and having pre-game retirement ceremonies that made the fan base cry while talking about the good old days.

And the subsequent years were some very rough ones indeed. Also made the fan base cry.

Cale signing in Calgary is the new Sakic signing in Vancouver. I’m having flashbacks to like 05-08 when Vancouver fans swore Sakic was coming home every season. Lol

Wednesday’s departure of assistant GM Chris O’Hearn only adds to the feeling of chaos and panic, and not just because of the unanswered questions about the justification for his dismissal, which team sources tell The Athletic came on the heels of multiple investigations into Wild executives by an outside firm commissioned by the organization.
Oh shit...what? MULTIPLE investigations into more than one Wild executive?

I hope there is at least one hard rock/metal guy on the Avs.

There is.
