The two are related.
The Oilers are not the best defensive team.
At the same time, Skinner is not a good goalie. At some point you have to make a f***ing save.
The Oilers have given up the 6th fewest high danger chances in the league. 9th fewest scoring chances.
Yet their goaltending is 32nd in the league.
I'm not saying Woodcroft was an amazing coach, but he was not the problem. If he gets a save at any point, he is still coaching.

Obviously. Firing Woodcroft was the one thing they could do because there was nothing imminent to fix the D-corps or goaltending.

There is always something that can be done. The Oilers just refuse to do it.
They have a plethora of picks and prospects at their disposal. They choose to keep them.
Nothing is forcing them to ice a defensive corps with guys like Ceci, Desharnais, and Kulak in prominent roles while Nurse is their #1.

There are dance partners aplenty.
Georgiev was on the block forever. Helleybuck was on the block for the last two years. Saros has been rumoured to be on the block the last 12 months. Carter Hart has been rumoured to be on the block for 2 years now.
Then for defensemen, Chychrun was on the block forever. Durzi was just traded for nothing. Hronek was traded last Summer. Ryan Graves was a UFA. Travis Sanheim was basically offered to every team last Summer. Colton Parayko has been on the trade block for 2 seasons.
That's just off the top of my head, too.
The Oilers don't want to move picks and prospects for help. Ken Holland, until last deadline, was crystal clear about that.

Edmonton absolutely is a goalie graveyard. Goalies have routinely looked better after leaving. Campbell was a mirage with the Leafs and has confidence issues though and Skinner just isn’t a good goalie.

It’s crazy they didn’t/wouldnt pay the amount Chychrun ultimately went for.
But at this point I think they really have no options other than to pay whatever it costs to get as good a goalie as possible. Pay 2 firsts and a prospect for Saros if that’s what it takes. It would be downright criminal for them to miss the playoffs.

When you have Leon and Connor you mortgage the future. I dont know how the Oilers management managed to f*** up a generational talent by not building a great team around him. The goalies the Oilers have had since McDavid been in the league.

If this is true that woman needs to walk away and never turn back. Choking is a massive red flag in DV. Choking in DV is significantly correlated with eventual murder. Domestic abusers who choke their partners are also more likely to kill or be killed by police
