What's with this goofy NHL schedule...

2 games
15 games
2 games
1 game
16 games
1 game

Who the hell makes a league schedule like that and what reasoning do they have to make it so you basically are either drinking from a firehose... or it's famine on many other nights.

I guess they have their reasons but it looks like dumb scheduling from my pov.
Especially for Canadians its an awful format. I say that because the entire NHL schedule is devised to avoid competition with NFL or other big sport time slots. Which as a non NFL fan living in Canada kind of pisses me off.

So that its suddenly winter in Canada, a perfect time to watch hockey, and last night people come home to one game on. One. We have 250 channels of shit and one NHL game on, and an NHL that in its wisdom only schedules 1,2 games on many nights. Its stupid.

It doesn't even make sense from an exposure perspective. I can't watch 6-10 games at once, on the same night, and wouln't, but I do want a choice or two of games to watch on a given night. Thats having your product out there on the dial the maximum amount. The NHL limits its exposure by haivng 10 games at once. jebus.

The Oilers passed on the following

Barzal to get Griffin Reinhart instead
Tkachuk to take Jesse Puljujarvi
DeBrincat to take Tyler Benson even though DeBrincat was McDavid's winger
Zegras to take Broberg instead

You can get some of these wrong, but if you flop on all of them, it's just an anchor on your franchise.

If Jarmo was willing to do his home work and see Puljujarvi was overrated, one should ask why the Oilers didn't do the same.

And that's the frustrating thing too, like fine "well every scouting agency had Puljujarvi at 3" ... OK fine, but every scouting agency also had Barzal in the top 10-12, DeBrincat and Zegras also probably above where they were taken and we didn't listen to them then.
Bouchard is the only full impact player the Oilers have drafted since McDavid.

Woof.

And the sad thing about that is it's not really even that big of a need.

Tyson Barrie basically was already doing what Evan Bouchard does.

So our draft help has been dick all for addressing any kind of pressing roster need.

We badly needed to land a Moritz Seider type D out of the Bouchard + Broberg picks, maybe it would have been smarter to spend a bit and move up in the draft to take Seider.

That player would've been a major difference maker here.

The drafting post-McDavid has been abysmal, it's a big part of the reason the team has the issues it does.

The drafting pre-McDavid wasn't much better.

Consensus top 3 pick, ranked #1 after the world jrs, big and skilled. It would be like Matthews or Laine dropping to #4 because a GM went off the board with the 3rd pick. Easy to look at it today and say other GMs would have taken Tkachuck or Sergachev with that pick but back in 2016 every scouting agency had JP in the top 3.
I still have no idea how JP was rated so highly, I watched the WJC that year and he was clearly a distant 3rd wheel on a line with Aho/Laine. He spent the whole tourney leeching a bunch of points just from being on the ice with his blatantly more talented linemates, yet seemed to have everyone gushing over him non-stop. His lack of hockey sense only became more prominent once he made it to Oiler's training camp, and he looked like a straight up dullard on skates once the regular season rolled around. Watching him flounder for 28 games that year while Mathews/Laine and especially Tkachuk hit the ground running was rather painful.

Easily one of the biggest draft misses of the decade. Some media guys were hyping him up as just as good as Mathews/Laine with better skating and defensive abilities, the forums around here were non-stop posts about how we wouldn't miss Hall because Puljujarvi would be better in every way.

Regional broadcast restrictions apply to the NFL, MLB and NBA as well.

...and that's why I don't get why so many hockey analysts take 2 weeks of boner pills over Christmas and New Year's for this tournament and draft rankings rise and fall over it.

More than safe to call him what he is, which is a draft pick bust. The way I see it, anybody taken in the top 10 should be sure fire NHL'ers unless a GM goes skinny dipping off the board and takes a projected late first/second rounder in that top 10 spot. Anyone who doesn't pan out...bust.

Sad when you think about it...out of four #1 picks and two more in the top four, two of those six picks were straight up busts.

Pisses me off when I see nice goals from random players like Paul Cotter from the knights.
Meanwhile our forwards here lack any f***ing creativity on finding even a simple goal to score.
Knights running away with the division. GG.

Valid point for future frenzy scheduling.

The other odd thing that someone mentioned on the main boards, but did the NHL even really market this whole frenzy day? Other than the day of I heard nothing about it. Did they even plan it or once they looked at the schedule they figured lets do something with this?

Tkachuk had his instigator suspension rescinded while Nurse did not.

Don’t forget that according to DPOS coming across the ice with a reach from the rafters two handed slash intentionally trying to break the arm of the leading goal scorer of the series is equivalent to the usually rescinded but not for the Oilers one game late game instigator.

Bettman making shit up as he goes along yet again and wonders why soccer and competitive eating are overtaking hockey in terms of popularity.

In the next CBA the NHLPA needs to push for all suspensions to be eligible for appeal to an independent arbitrator rather than only suspensions exceeding 6 games.

This will force the NHL to consider precedent when handing out suspensions instead of whatever the f*** it is we have now.
