agree. who takes him, though, and at what cost?

He's signed for four more years (his age 33 - 36 seasons) at a $6.75 cap hit. He gets paid basically that amount. And he has an NTC (which, I think doesn't go away even if McDonagh agrees to a trade). Given that McD controls where he'll go, it's not even clear a traditional dumping ground like AZ is possible.

It feels to me like Tampa needs to retain in order to make a move happen, and even then it seems pretty iffy.
I don't think they need to retain, I just don't think they'll get much coming back. That's going to be a limited market for sure

McDonagh is still a serviceable defenseman though. Even if they aren't willing to retain salary, they will probably be able to find someone willing to take him. But retaining would make it easier.
That NTC will make it tough. What bad team wants to pay him that much at that age and what good team has the cap and is in a spot where McDonagh will say ok?

Solid Contract..
More than solid for him, but is a $1 million dollar a year contract a steal for a guy that's about to turn 30 years old and the first year he spent the entirety of in the NHL was just this last year? Were they really gonna pay him more than that? It's not like they got him for a discount. He really has no leg to stand on to ask for more than this.

I mean, technically he was in the NHL for the entirety of the season before that, but everybody carried 3 goalies on their roster.

Although, it wasn't nearly as generous as the deal Anton Forsberg got from Ottawa. Forsberg has been in and out of the NHL for about 8 years now and he's the same age as Wedgewood and got a 3 year deal and I'm pretty sure it was even for $1.5 or $1.7 million or something?

Assuming their preference is to ship him to the West:

St. Louis - Window still open, LD is a little weaker with Krug, Scandella, and Scott Perunovich. Cap space might be tight, about 9 mil to sign David Perron, a backup goalie, and a depth forward.

Los Angeles - Very young at LD, they brought in Alex Edler last season. They have cap space and are overflowing with cheap ELC forwards who might be attractive to Tampa.

Wedge is listed as the 8th best UFA goalie on the Athletic UFA goalie list, which tells you a lot about this year’s market.

The list is:
Top End Talent
1. Kuemper
Strong Support Players
2. Fleury
3. Husso
4. Campbell
Useful Depth
5. DeSmith
6. Holtby
7. Comrie
8. Wedgewood
9. Greiss
10. Jones (lol)

McD is a fine middle pairing D but at nearly 7 million a season for 4 more years it will start to look bad. LA looks to make sense here but if it’s anything but a cap dump I don’t think it’s a win for LA. If somehow Tampa gets out of the later years of that contract for nothing it would be huge for them.

He’s still a good top pair caliber player. The contract wouldn’t be an issue if not for the age

Tocchet is literally the most popular BAD HEAD COACH in the entire league.

I thought only Philly was dumb enough to hire him to be the head coach at this point.

6 years (I'm cheating slightly because he didn't start the first year, Barry Melrose did. The record was just as bad with him in the 66 games he was there though) and his only playoff berth (a freebie) was the SHAM bubble playoffs where only like 6 or 7 teams didn't make it because of the premature end to the season. Now, they MIGHT have JUST made it that year, but they also probably would have finished just outside.

Yeah, his goaltending was hilarious in Tampa, when you look at the list of goalies. Mike Smith was pretty solid the first year of Tocchet, not so much the next season.

But in Arizona both Raanta AND Kuemper had career years there in different seasons and Arizona was still horrible and didn't make the playoffs.

He also surrounds himself with jackasses like John MacLean who he handpicked to assist him in Arizona, who also got ganked a year before Tocchet even did.

Tocchet is a TERRIBLE HEAD COACH. Winnipeg has a pretty good roster, so maybe they can carry him to his first REAL playoff berth as an NHL head coach in year 7.

Jets fans thinking they're getting Trotz, then finding out they're getting Tocchet instead...
